But seriously folks ... it's just an iPad ad. AdvertisementThere's been a huge backlash to the ad Apple put out this week to promote its updated iPads. In the ad, a hydraulic press squishes a piano, trumpet, books, paint cans — and then reveals the new iPad Pro. A YouTube channel dedicated to hydraulic press crush videos has more than 9 million followers. Let's say OpenAI made an ad crushing up books, newspapers, and magazines and then revealed the ChatGPT logo.

Instead of glaring too much at iPhone revenue, Wall Street chose to focus on the positive. Apple said iPhone sales suffered from a difficult comparison to last year, when sales were elevated after previous shortages. Annual iPhone revenue peaked in Apple's fiscal 2022. While Apple provided some guidance for total revenue, it avoided offering any sort of forecast for iPhone sales. "For the last couple of years we were doing $90 billion and now we're doing $110 billion," Maestri said on the call.

Apple wanted all eyes to be on the Vision Pro when it launched. A report about AI chips coming to next-gen Macs helped boost Apple's stock by $112 billion. But with the market at an all-time high, now is probably a good time to hedge against potential downside, experts say. That's especially the case because there's an elevated degree of risk facing stocks, and the cost of some insurance measures is historically cheap. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday told investors he thinks the government's antitrust lawsuits against prominent names in Big Tech — Apple , Alphabet 's Google and Amazon — aren't justified. "Honestly, I wish the White House would just admit the truth: They want to make the biggest businesses less powerful," he said. The DOJ also alleged Apple has a "smartphone monopoly" that makes it difficult and pricey for consumers and developers to venture outside the Apple ecosystem. If they annihilate Google, I guess we'll take our queries to Claude 3," Cramer said. "And if they get [Apple CEO] Tim Cook, maybe for the first time, someone will want a Nokia smartphone."

For the last decade, many Apple employees working on the company’s secretive car project, internally code-named Titan, had a less flattering name for it: the Titanic disaster. Throughout its existence, the car effort was scrapped and rebooted several times, shedding hundreds of workers along the way. As a result of dueling views among leaders about what an Apple car should be, it began as an electric vehicle that would compete against Tesla and morphed into a self-driving car to rival Google’s Waymo. The car project’s demise was a testament to the way Apple has struggled to develop new products in the years since Steve Jobs’s death in 2011. But it festered and ultimately fizzled in large part because developing the software and algorithms for a car with autonomous driving features proved too difficult.

So-called Magnificent Seven stocks Apple , Alphabet and Tesla may no longer be living up to that title, according to Wolfe Research. "It's really more like the Mag 4 or Fab 4 these days," Wolfe Research managing director Rob Ginsberg wrote Monday. " The meteoric rise of the "Magnificent Seven" stocks — Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla — lifted the S & P 500 to a 24.2% gain in 2023. It was a good run, but the era of the Magnificent Seven is over for the stock market. "I don't see these seven names rising together," said the analyst who coined the nickname for the group. AdvertisementThe Magnificent Seven are looking a little less magnificent, and aren't really even a band of seven anymore. In a note titled "R.I.P the Magnificent Seven Era," Mike O'Rourke, chief market strategist from Jones Trading, said the group's dominance over the stock market is coming to a close. Back in April 2023, when O'Rourke invented the moniker (although some say it was BofA's Michael Hartnett who coined the term), the Magnificent Seven contributed to a stunning 88% of year-to-date gains.

New York CNN —US markets broke a five-week winning streak last Friday after disappointing inflation data reignited economic and interest rate-related fears on Wall Street. Then last week, two key inflation indicators for January — the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index — rose above Wall Street expectations. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said the new data showed that the Fed needs more confidence before cutting rates. I think in this case, the market isn’t necessarily telling you much about the economy’s fundamentals, the market is telling you what other market participants think. And I think that those economic fundamentals get you to the part that says, you know, it’s not not the economy.

Michael M. Santiago | Getty ImagesThe so-called "Magnificent 7" now wields greater financial might than almost every other major country in the world, according to new Deutsche Bank research. The meteoric rise in the profits and market capitalizations of the Magnificent 7 U.S. tech behemoths — Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla — outstrip those of all listed companies in almost every G20 country, the bank said in a research note Tuesday. Of the non-U.S. G20 countries, only China and Japan (and the latter, only just) have greater profits when their listed companies are combined. Deutsche Bank analysts highlighted that the Magnificent 7's combined market cap alone would make it the second-largest country stock exchange in the world, double that of Japan in fourth. However, this level of concentration has led some analysts to voice concerns over related risks in the U.S. and global stock market.

Megacap tech stocks aren't just powering the U.S. stock market — they're also holding the world together. U.S. equities now comprise 70% of the MSCI World Index, the benchmark for large- and mid-cap companies across 23 developed markets. The MSCI World Index shifts regional and country weights based on broader economic trends. High levels of market concentration in the late 1920s to early 1930s, as well as 2000, coincided with a market top, he noted. The Europe Stoxx 600 has risen only 2.6% year to date, underperforming the U.S. broad market index.

The so-called Magnificent Seven stocks are showing behavior consistent with major asset bubbles through history, according to Bank of America. Looking at variables including catalysts for the surge, the price of money (i.e., interest rates), share prices and valuation, Hartnett sees similarities between the Magnificent Seven and some of the other big bubbles going back centuries. As far as what could pop the bubble, he cited tightening financial conditions and rising real interest rates. From a valuation standpoint, the Magnificent Seven is currently 20% above its 200-day moving average. "It ain't cheap but true that bubble highs have seen dafter valuations," Hartnett wrote.

After turbocharging late 2023's stock market rally, some of the " Magnificent 7 " technology darlings are looking less magnificent this year. Shares of Meta and Nvidia are leading the Magnificent 7 for the year, with both stocks jumping roughly 34% each. The rest of the Magnificent 7 stocks, however, have received anywhere from 70% to 85% buy rating consensus. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday told investors not to be wary of the Big Tech megacap stocks, saying their high valuation is well-earned. But Cramer refuted such claims, saying all of these tech names have hefty revenue streams to back up their valuations. He pointed out the proven probability of the megacaps, including three that reported quarterly earnings Thursday after the bell: Apple, Meta and Amazon. Cramer said the three generated upward of $300 billion in revenue and nearly $59 billion in net income combined. "You may think that these megacap stocks are somehow wrongly valued versus the rest of the market," Cramer said.
