But the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) advanced for the week as well as the day and registered a second consecutive monthly gain. For the month the S&P rose 1.5% while the Dow added 2.5% and the Nasdaq was barely higher. For the week the S&P rose 0.9% in line with the Dow's weekly gain and the Nasdaq rose 1.3%. While the S&P 500 bank index closed up 1.1%, shares in First Republic tumbled in the regular session and after the close. The S&P 500 posted 25 new 52-week highs and 2 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 66 new highs and 136 new lows.

Chipmaker Intel Corp (INTC.O) gained 4.7% after it said gross margins will improve in the second half of the year. Analysts now expect first-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies to fall 1.9% from a year ago compared with a 5.1% fall expected at the start of April, according to Refinitiv data. The KBW Regional Banking index (.KRX) and the S&P 500 bank index (.SPXBK) gained over 1% each. Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 2.90-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.07-to-1 ratio favored advancers. The S&P 500 posted 24 new 52-week highs and 2 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 53 new highs and 107 new lows.

The national median price for a one-bedroom apartment is $1,495 in April, flat month over month. For a two-bedroom place, the national median price of $1,842 was up by 0.5%. One-bedroom median rent over the last month was down in 39 of the top cities tracked by Zumper. The report also found the one-bedroom median price was up 6% year over year, lower than the double-digit increases throughout much of 2021 and 2022. New York City ranked first in a list of median prices for one-bedroom apartments at $3,570, followed by Jersey City, NJ, at $3,000.

Eddie Van Halen's iconic "Hot for Teacher" guitar sold for nearly $4 million at auction this week. Van Halen died in 2020 from cancer. The winning bidder will receive the guitar's original case, along with the straight jacket and white gloves Van Halen wore in the video, a letter from the instrument's creator Paul Unkert, and a signed photo of Van Halen. "The 'Hot For Teacher' Van Halen [guitar] was built by me at the Kramer Green Grove Road Plant in Neptune, NJ around 1982-1985/ #CO176. In 2020, Van Halen died at the age of 65 from cancer, and he's widely regarded as an innovator of guitar-playing.

Bed Bath & Beyond is closing 43 stores, two warehouses, and one fulfillment center in New Jersey. New layoff rules go into effect on April 10 in the state, which could have cost the company millions. On the morning of Tuesday, January 10, Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Sue Gove offered a rosy update about the company's turnaround strategy during its third-quarter earnings call. Representatives for Bed Bath & Beyond did not respond to Insider's question about whether the law influenced the timing of its New Jersey closures. Unlike prior cuts in which as many as 12 weeks of severance pay were given, Bed Bath & Beyond workers in several states affected by this round of layoffs tell Insider they will receive nothing.

Shares of Norfolk Southern have erased $5 billion in market value since the Ohio train derailment. On February 3, a Norfolk Southern train derailment released toxic chemicals in the community of East Palestine, Ohio. JPMorgan estimated Norfolk Southern will face costs related to the train derailment of as much as $50 million. Despite the efforts, investors have grown concerned about the potential costs Norfolk Southern will face in lawsuits and clean-up actions. So far, water tests have yet to show vinyl chloride entering the drinking water for residents in the East Palestine, Ohio area.

Over three dozen Regal Cinemas locations in the US are expected to close. Cineworld detailed the plan to reject the leases starting February 15 in a new bankruptcy filing on Tuesday. Regal is the second-largest cinema chain in the US, behind AMC, with over 500 theaters. The company's plan to close locations during its bankruptcy is fairly routine. Cineworld filed for bankruptcy at a time when the larger theatrical industry is struggling to fully rebound from the pandemic.
