CNN —Suspicious packages were sent this week to election offices in more than 20 states, leading to an FBI investigation, triggering evacuations and rattling staff, according to a CNN survey of state offices and Associated Press reporting. Karen Brinson Bell, the executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, told CNN that that the battleground state was also targeted this week. Officials in Kansas and New York said in statements and interviews that, after the letters were noticed, they evacuated their offices. Postal Inspection Service are investigating a series of suspicious mailings sent to election officials in several states,” the FBI said in a statement. A source involved with a group that coordinates with election officials across the country told CNN the 2023 incident led many of these offices to step up precautions and safety measures, so they were better protected this time around.

The NAACP plans to spend $20 million encouraging Black Americans, a critical voting bloc in the presidential race, to turn out to vote across 12 states this fall. The NAACP’s campaign is not geared toward benefiting specific candidates, but rather is designed to broadly mobilize and educate Black voters ahead of the 2024 election. The group plans to engage more than 14.5 million Black voters. While Black voters traditionally overwhelmingly support Democrats, the margin of victory and turnout levels among the group can make a major difference. By comparison, exit polls across those same states showed President Joe Biden won 89% of Black voters, compared with 9% for Trump.

President Joe Biden's student debt forgiveness plan faces another setback as a federal judge extended the temporary restraining order against it on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Randal Hall, who was appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, said that Biden's plan would remain blocked for an additional 14 days. The ruling came as the Biden administration was expected to publish its final rule on a revised student loan forgiveness plan in October. The judge first issued a temporary restraining order on Sept. 5 shortly after the lawsuit was filed. Those enrolled in the plan, around 8 million people, do not have to make payments at this time.

Yet while Black swing-state voters are largely lined up behind Harris, there are some important differences among subsets of the Black vote. Meanwhile, Black swing-state voters with college degrees support Harris over Trump by 73 points, while Black voters who aren’t college graduates support Harris over Trump by 68 points. Just over a quarter (26%) of men under 50 without college degrees said they’ll vote for Trump, compared with 67% who said they’ll vote for Harris. The Black voters polled most closely associated Harris with policies on abortions rights and reproductive health care (28%) and economic policies (26%). “And if they aren’t learning what Black voters are thinking, they’ll continue to be driven” by reporting and polling that doesn’t delve as deeply into Black opinion.

The influential Teamsters union on Wednesday declined to issue an endorsement in the presidential race, Megan Lebowitz and Alexandra Marquez report. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocated over $175 million toward the EV battery supply chain in Georgia and $135 million over five years toward infrastructure for EV charging stations in Georgia. Investments in EV and battery manufacturing will boost job growth and output in both of these sectors, Benson said. Strong population growth remains a tailwind for Georgia's economic growth and EV industry, Benson said. The FBI is warning election offices to be on the lookout after threatening letters containing suspicious substances were sent to the offices of multiple secretaries of state throughout the country. A senior law enforcement official confirms elections officials in at least six states received packages on Monday, but so far none of the packages have been found to contain any actual hazardous material. Secretaries of state, attorney general offices and state election offices in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming and Oklahoma were targeted. The FBI, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and state and local law enforcement partners are investigating multiple letters containing suspicious substances which have been mailed to Secretary of State's offices. The incident is also the second time in the past year that threats have hit multiple state election offices simultaneously.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. CNN —One of the best pollsters in America recently came out with its latest survey, and it’s good news for Kamala Harris. That result fell well short of the lead he had in preelection state polling. The fact that the Selzer poll is indicating a similar shift in Harris’ favor in Iowa makes me think the Wisconsin polls may be on to something. But far fewer of them have high confidence in the process, with that mistrust driven largely by voters who support former President Donald Trump. And sizable shares of Trump voters lack even modest confidence in the system. Harris supporters’ expressions of confidence in the election process come amid a campaign that many of her backers view as a referendum on democracy itself.
