Benjamin Samuels, a 31-year-old cybersecurity auditor from Los Angeles, started shifting his emergency cash into Treasurys last year, attracted by rising interest rates. He hadn’t expected the U.S. government—thought to be the world’s safest borrower—to find itself two weeks from default. Mr. Samuels had set up his Treasury holdings to reinvest automatically as bills mature, but he logged on to the Treasury Department’s website last week to reverse that setting. Now he is holding more cash, spooked by the approaching deadline for Congress and President Biden to raise the government’s borrowing limit to avoid an unprecedented U.S. borrowing snafu.
BURBANK, California, May 11 (Reuters) - As striking Hollywood writers protest working conditions, some are seeking more than a new labor contract. Single members of the Writers Guild of America gathered outside the Universal Studios lot this week for a combination of picketing and a dating mixer that later moved to a taco eatery. "Writers love to multitask, so this is perfect for us," said 42-year-old "Feed the Devil" writer Matt Altman. In addition to the international reporting prize, the New York Times took the award for illustrated reporting and commentary.
A think tank created by a Palantir co-founder is behind model legislation banning "public camping." So far, Texas and Missouri have passed laws making public camping a Class C misdemeanor. Many states and cities have taken a punitive approach to the problem, making homeless encampments illegal. In 2021, Texas became the first state to pass a Cicero-inspired state-wide law, making public camping a Class C misdemeanor punishable with up to a $500 fine. And, if they don't comply with the ban, it criminalizes their living condition," Eric Samuels, president and CEO of the Texas Homeless Network, said in a statement at the time.
The duo has raised $9.75 million in VC, a major accomplishment for two Black female entrepreneurs. As of 2022, only a few hundred Black or Latina women founders have raised $1 million or more in VC. White men see white women in their homes and they see Black men in the locker room, but they don't see Black women as often. Feeling seen by our women investors and investors of color has made a huge difference. There are tons of Black women founders in healthcare.
Lila Werner, second from right, was paid about $5,700 for seven weeks of travel and ice skating in Belgium and Saudi Arabia this winter. But there's a downside to being an international ice skater: Werner says she'll return with very little remaining from her paycheck. Other contracted ice skaters who quit their jobs and performed abroad during the holiday didn't earn much money — but they got to travel essentially for free. "This almost feels like a paid vacation," Werner says. Werner, for example, still paid rent on her one-bedroom apartment while she traveled.

One of the most common pain relief treatments for arthritis, corticosteroid injections, may actually be associated with faster progression of the disease, according to new research. There is no cure, but the discomfort is sometimes treated with corticosteroid shots. The scans, collected annually for four years, revealed worse arthritis progression among participants injected with corticosteroids compared to the other two groups. Just because imaging shows more arthritis progression doesn’t mean a patient feels more pain. And second, he said, the results shouldn’t lead people to avoid corticosteroid shots in all situations.
And that’s exactly where inflation can get “sticky,” meaning once prices for services rise they tend to remain at those levels for some time. “When you have strong price pressures in the services sector, they’re likely to last longer,” Nicaj said. That’s the risk that you also take as a business raising prices, because you may lose clients.”To Ryczko, it’s a strategic balancing act. Courtesy Genora Boykins and Sharon Owens“I don’t know of any goods that we are utilizing that haven’t increased in cost,” Boykins said. “Even if it doesn’t necessarily turn around, at least you don’t want [prices] to continue to escalate month after month after month.”

But too many people didn’t agree when questions around Hunter Biden arose in the last campaign. If anything, the rush to dismiss the early Hunter Biden coverage left rumors to fester. Hunter Biden was also paid by a bank that benefited from his father’s work on personal bankruptcy legislation in the Senate. But after his father entered the White House, Hunter Biden began selling his paintings at prices as high as $500,000 per item. But it’s still worth getting to the bottom of the Hunter Biden drama.

Tate Reeves, a Republican, has blamed Jackson’s water problems on mismanagement by city leaders. Reeves declared an emergency for the water system in late August and brought in out-of-state crews to help make repairs. Before the city’s latest water crisis, though, Reeves expressed his own opposition to state funding for Jackson water improvements, saying he wants to hold down Mississippi’s overall debt level.
At a private dinner Wednesday at New York's swanky Le Pavillon, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called on tech executives to keep their companies in the city, even as industry leaders raise concerns to city officials of soaring rents and an increase in violent crime. He told the more than two dozen tech leaders: "New York City needs and wants technology companies," another attendee said, adding that city officials want tech companies to "help grow the economy of this city." Adams' spokesman Fabien Levy confirmed the mayor spoke to the tech executives, but said, "Mayor Adams wasn't there for dinner." "While we don't discuss private conversations, Mayor Adams always welcomes and encourages businesses to come to NYC," Levy said in an email. Conway said in an interview, noting that it's important for tech leaders and companies to be civically engaged.
