Market pricing on Wednesday morning suggested a 60% probability of a rate cut at the BOE's Aug. 1 meeting. That is far less conviction than traders had before the European Central Bank enacted its own rate cut at the start of June; while pricing for the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut for the first time in this cycle in September has hit 100%. watch nowIn both May and June, seven MPC members voted to hold, as two voted to cut by 25 basis points. Headline U.K. inflation spiked higher than in the U.S. and euro zone over the last two years, but has also cooled more quickly. "I would rather hold rates until there is more certainty that underlying inflationary pressures have subsided sustainably," Haskel said.

Despite its progressive intentions, the tax failed to raise sufficient revenue for the monarch, as people boarded up their windows to lower their tax liability. Window tax was a property tax based on the number of windows in a house. In addition, the minister also lifted capital gains for stock market investors who cash in within a year from 15% to 20%. While the tax raises more than £3 billion ($3.9 billion) annually, it has given birth to far riskier forms of speculation while simultaneously hurting the stock market. However, given the lofty valuations that Indian stock markets currently trade, the tax to skim the excesses might be a positive development over the longer term.

During the pandemic, the federal government covered the entire cost of the Summer EBT program, but starting this summer, states will be on the hook to split administrative costs 50/50. AlabamaAccording to the state's Department of Health, one in four children in Alabama faces food insecurity. The state will reconsider joining the summer program once the backlog is dealt with, the outlet reported. Brian Kemp told local outlet 11 Alive that the state already has a summer food program in place.

Anna Moneymaker | Getty ImagesFormer President Donald Trump's recent proposal to replace the U.S. income tax with a tariff on all imported goods is a twist on a clarion call from conservatives — and it could come with unintended consequences. This week, Trump floated the concept of imposing an "all tariff policy," ultimately to eliminate the income tax, sources told CNBC. Entities like the Kemp Commission and Steve Forbes have commonly called to replace the income tax with a flat tax. Trump's proposal brings a new wrinkle to the movement, as it would replace the income tax with a levy on all imported goods. Simple math would suggest that the government may need to impose a 65% tax on all imported goods and services to raise the needed $2.5 trillion.

New York CNN —Red Lobster wants to close several dozen more restaurants following its bankruptcy, and it has identified which ones are in danger of shutting down if the court approves its plan. The chain, which brought affordable shrimp and lobster to middle-class America and grew to become the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world, filed for bankruptcy last month. Red Lobster said that it had more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand. Part of its plan is to close some locations of its nearly 600 restaurants in the meantime. A few weeks prior to its bankruptcy, it abruptly closed around 50 locations across the United States.

The departure of the company’s chief product officer adds to a “wall of worry” Raymond James analysts said. Choe joined Lululemon more than seven years ago and became chief product officer in 2018, according to her LinkedIn. “I think that there’s a lot of people out there who believe that she was the person behind the scenes and was the most instrumental to Lululemon’s success,” Nikic said. Lulu has been “hyper aware” of dupe culture, Nikki Neuburger, then its Chief Brand Officer, previously said in an interview with CNN Business. However, Lululemon wasn’t stocked enough in these smaller sizes, which could have led these younger shoppers to competitors, Nikic said.

CNN —A squat, light-colored building in Tigard, Oregon, was supposed to be part of a game-changing new solution for the global plastics industry. And unlike mechanical recycling, where the quality of the product declines each time, chemical recycling promises virgin-quality plastics. Chemical company Dow says it plans to build multiple chemical recycling facilities in the US and Europe, adding as much as 600,000 tons (1.2 billion pounds) of recycling capacity by 2030. “Mechanical recycling simply uses less energy and chemicals than does chemical recycling, making it overall cheaper and less environmentally impactful,” she said. With that kind of industry pressure, said Congdon, it’s easy to see why chemical recycling may be attractive to policymakers.

Barry Kemp, an archaeologist whose decades of painstaking digging at the abandoned capital of a mysterious pharaoh helped revolutionize our understanding of how everyday ancient Egyptians lived, worked and worshiped, died on May 15 in Cambridge, Britain, one day after his 84th birthday. The death was announced by the Amarna Project, an archaeology nonprofit where Mr. Kemp was director. Almost from the moment he arrived to teach at Cambridge University in 1962, fresh out of college, Mr. Kemp was a phenomenon. Much of his work had little to do with the pharaohs, though. He was among the first to apply the questions of social history, in which scholars explore the lives of everyday people in the past, to ancient Egypt.

Read previewTwo years ago, the University of Georgia football icon and then-Senate candidate Herschel Walker was seen by many Republicans as a future star in the party. Walker, running against Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in the Georgia Senate race, won over many establishment politicians. Walker previously contributed $100,000 to the National Republican Senate Committee for a recount fund, and he also gave roughly $400,000 to charities, according to Politico. Brian Kemp — a conservative who clashed with Trump-aligned figures over the 2020 election — has largely bypassed the state party by utilizing his own political committee to fundraise. But Biden is eager to hold Georgia, as his 2020 win in the state was one of the biggest electoral triumphs for Democrats that year.

The Notting Hill of the 1990s was still socially heterodox and shabby chic, a neighborhood where a group of 30-something professionals could plausibly have ended up. Even in the late 1990s, such access to disposable income marked the characters in “Notting Hill” out as privileged. Yet, in the 1990s, Notting Hill, long a center of Caribbean immigrant culture and the site of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, underwent a rapid process of gentrification. Wise Smith, meantime, has faced some skepticism from voters worried that if he ousts Willis it could endanger the Trump case. The disqualification drama surrounding Willis hasn’t spared Wise Smith from skepticism from some Democrats who believe Willis will most aggressively prosecute the Trump case. “Some folks were worried that me jumping in the race, you know, might mean we lose that case,” Wise Smith said in an interview with CNN. That could benefit third-party or independent presidential candidates in a state that Joe Biden narrowly carried over Donald Trump in 2020. A super PAC backing independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in February that it had gathered enough signatures in Georgia for Kennedy to make the ballot. Currently, independent or third-party candidates must collect at least 7,500 signatures from registered Georgia voters to qualify for the ballot in the state. A separate provision of the election legislation would broaden what constitutes “probable cause” needed to uphold challenges to voter registrations. Voting rights groups have objected to several provisions in the legislation, including the rules regarding voter challenges.
