Read previewBritish politicians have a plan to train young men in schools to be alternative influencer role models to controversial anti-feminist figure Andrew Tate. He's become an all-encompassing figure for young men who feel attacked by modern society and believe they have been left behind. Boys and young men idolize TateLiking manosphere creators doesn't directly mean someone will be violent toward women. Experts have expressed worry that the influence of Tate and other manosphere creators is deeply ingrained. AdvertisementThe ideological gap between Gen Z's young men and women is also widening, and these creators could be making it worse.

The Black homeownership rate saw a modest annual uptick to 44.1% in 2022 from 44% in 2021, but remains significantly behind the White homeownership rate of 72%, the report found. A stubborn racial homeownership gapEven with some improvement in the Black homeownership rate, the change has done little to close the yawning gap between Black and White homeownership. Over the past decade, the gap between the two groups’ homeownership rates has worsened, expanding from 27 points to 28 points. Other states with high Black homeownership rates include South Carolina and Delaware, each at 55%. Plus, the median household income for Black Americans was $47,800 in 2022, while the median income for White Americans was $75,700.

By David BrunnstromWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. official for arms control said on Wednesday she is "very confident" the United States will certify Australia and Britain as eligible for exemptions from export-control regulations under the AUKUS submarine project. The AUKUS project unveiled by the three countries in 2023 involves Australia acquiring nuclear-powered attack submarines as part of efforts by the allies to push back against China's growing power in the Indo-Pacific region. This is provided for in the 2024 U.S. National Defense Authorization Act passed in December, but requires Biden's final signoff by mid-April. "We have to keep showing that we're all-in and ... people are watching what's happening with the supplemental," she said. "We need to pass a supplemental because of all the things in here, including AUKUS, that shows the U.S. wants to continue to be a leader."

Tesla will pay a fee of $1.5 million to settle a civil lawsuit alleging the company mishandled hazardous waste materials at facilities throughout the state of California for years. District attorneys representing the people of 25 California counties had filed their lawsuit, The People of the State of California v. Tesla Inc., earlier in the week in a state court in San Joaquin County. The suit also alleged that Tesla frequently failed to properly label containers of hazardous materials that it generated, used or stored at its facilities, and failed to train employees in proper handling of hazardous waste. In addition to the settlement fee, Tesla will need to "comply with a detailed injunction for five years," according to the statement. The audits will continue for five years and involve inspections of Tesla's trash containers for hazardous waste, the statement from Jenkins said.

The budding love story featuring music superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce took an unexpected turn into the world of political conspiracy theories this week after the team advanced to the Super Bowl. Pop culture and politics have long been entwined. “Pop culture people identify with this stuff, they pay attention to it. It’s attention and identity,” Joel Penney, an associate professor at Montclair State University whose research includes the intersection of politics and pop culture, said. “That question of, does this stuff work in pop culture?

The New Hampshire primary comes eight days after Iowa's Republican caucuses, which former President Donald Trump dominated. The New Hampshire primary will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 23, with the precise hours dependent on the voting location. That means the New Hampshire primary will serve purely as a barometer of support for the Democrats in the race. But New Hampshire state law requires it to host the first primary, and the Republican-controlled state government declined to make any legislative change to its primary date. Democratic President Joe Biden is running for reelection but will not be on the ballot because of the primary date dispute.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — For filmmaker Issa López, the first question was where? “The moment I understood it was the Arctic, everything started falling into place,” the director of “True Detective: Night Country” told reporters in Mexico City ahead of Sunday's premiere on HBO and HBO Max. The Mexican director was looking for a region of the United States that had a totally different physical feel from the previous three “True Detective” installments, which were set in Louisiana, Los Angeles and Arkansas, respectively. Both seek to shed light on the disappearance of eight scientists from an isolated research station, and also face the unsolved murder of an Inuit woman who was an environmental activist and midwife. The series is executive produced by Foster, López, Barry Jenkins, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Journal Editorial Report: Edward Lawrence interviews economic strategist Jason Trennert. Official Washington has Jessica Rosenworcel , the Federal Communications Commission chief. Last seen restarting a needless fight over net neutrality, over the holidays she committed more bureaucracy. The courts pressured her to complete her agency’s absurdly delayed 2018 “quadrennial review” of its extensive media ownership regulations. Of course she found these regulations more urgent than ever despite the internet having obliterated the ostensible electromagnetic scarcity on which they were premised.

Read previewA federal judge has, for the second time, postponed sentencing for six former Mississippi cops who pleaded guilty to a long list of state and federal charges for torturing two Black men. Sentencing had been set to begin on January 16, but a court hearing schedule shows that US District Judge Tom Lee has pushed back sentencing to March 19. In October, he granted motions from some former officers to delay sentencing after their attorneys said they needed more time to evaluate sentencing reports and prepare objections. The men admitted in August to subjecting Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker to numerous acts of racially motivated, violent torture. AdvertisementProsecutors say some of the officers called themselves the "Goon Squad" because of their willingness to use excessive force and cover up attacks.

Administration officials estimate the hydrogen production credits will deliver $140 billion in revenue and 700,000 jobs by 2030 — and help the US produce 50 million metric tons of hydrogen by 2050. Firms that produce hydrogen using fossil fuels get less. The Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association includes more than 100 members involved in hydrogen production, distribution and use, including vehicle manufacturers, industrial gas companies, renewable developers and nuclear plant operators. Some of the money will flow to regional networks, or "hubs," of hydrogen producers, consumers and infrastructure that the Biden administration is also trying to kickstart with a $7 billion program.

asked Kristen Brengel of the National Parks Conservation Association, noting that visitors on the ground far outnumber those overhead. Congress passed another round of legislation in 2000 with a goal of setting rules in other national parks. Historically, some of the nation's busiest spots for tour operators are Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and Haleakala National Park. But Brengel of the National Parks Conservation Association said the resistance doesn't have much traction. An amendment to the FAA reauthorization bill that would have required the agency to factor in the economics of commercial air tours over national parks failed in July, she said.

In “Collusion vs. Stop the Steal” (Business World, Nov. 25), Holman Jenkins , Jr., correctly notes the resemblance between the 2016 Russia-collusion theory and the 2020 election-denial myth. He says, however, that “one difference” between the two is the “broad, voluntary effort by the establishment, including the news media,” to propagate the theory that the 2016 election had been stolen by Russia for Donald Trump. Apparently, he doesn’t believe there was a similar effort on the other side in 2020. To the contrary, the reason millions of Americans falsely believe that the 2020 election was stolen is that they were led to believe this by a concerted effort on the part of many in conservative media, at least some of whom knew better.

It's a high-risk gambit for the Florida governor, Republican strategists said. They insist Newsom could be a presidential contender as early as next year, though the governor has pledged to stand behind Biden's bid. "Ron DeSantis looks forward to sharing the stark contrast between his vision to revive our nation and Newsom's blueprint for failure," DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier said in an email. Nathan Click, a Newsom adviser, said his team was "shocked" when DeSantis agreed to the California governor's proposal to debate. The Trump campaign did not comment on the debate.

Brian Swensen, a national political director for Ramaswamy who had been focusing much of his time on the crucial early nominating state of New Hampshire, left the former biotech executive's presidential campaign as it has struggled to gain traction. A Trump aide said Swensen will now help the former president's campaign in Nevada, another early state in the Republican nomination battle. Ramaswamy, 38, who has staked out far-right positions on many issues and has been a fervent defender of Trump, created political buzz early in his campaign with combative, attention-grabbing debate performances. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for Ramaswamy's campaign, said Swensen's departure had nothing to do with internal problems within the campaign. She said the appointment of Mike Biundo, a veteran political operative from New Hampshire, as Ramaswamy's national political adviser had rendered Swensen's New Hampshire role less relevant.

How Elon Became an ‘Antisemite’

Speaking at the 2022 Baron Funds Conference in New York, Elon Musk discussed the 'revenue challenges' he's facing at Twitter, and how a product plan conceived more than 20 years ago could see the social media platform become one of the most valuable companies in the world. Image: Baron Capital via AP/Anadolu Agency Composite: Mark KellyMajor papers like the Journal, New York Times and Washington Post report that advertisers are again fleeing the service previously known as Twitter because, these papers explain, owner Elon Musk endorsed “an antisemitic post.” But try confirming for yourself that the post was intelligibly antisemitic or intelligibly anything else for that matter. The perplexing issue is the noun. A user @breakingbaht expressed a lack of sympathy for “ Jewish communities” (emphasis added) that allegedly encouraged “the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them” while supporting immigration of “hordes of minorities.”

A humanoid AI robot in Geneva, July 5. Photo: fabrice coffrini/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesThe mission of a for-profit company is, well, profit, the greatest return for investors. That’s the profound ethical crisis at the heart of artificial general intelligence development (“Capitalism Works, Says ChatGPT” by Holman Jenkins, Jr., Business World, Nov. 22). Open AI’s nonprofit mission has been to guard humanity against the possible (and seemingly ever more probable) danger of unleashing artificial general intelligence on the world. If the controlling factor is mere profit, look for the nightmare.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden Photo: morry gash/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesA recent column observed disconcertingly that election denial appears to have been a successful strategy for Donald Trump. Larry Kudlow , his former White House economic adviser, points out that many voters like Trump policies, which is true. How does “stop the steal” advance their cause? One might also ask how and why collusion continues to work for Democrats. My inbox is as revealing about collusion as it is about stop the steal, with some Democrats clinging to whatever they heard first, including the legend of the Moscow hotel room, long since debunked by the U.S. Justice Department.

Hong Kong CNN —Hospitals in Beijing and northern China are grappling with a surge of children with respiratory illnesses as the country enters its first winter since relaxing stringent Covid-19 controls nearly one year ago. Wait times to see doctors stretch for hours, with hundreds of patients queuing at some children’s hospitals in major cities across northern China, according to CNN reporting and Chinese state and social media. The surge in cases across northern China comes amid a rise in seasonal respiratory infections around the northern hemisphere, including in the United States, where RSV is spreading at “unprecedented” levels among children. Children receive intravenous drips at a children's hospital in Beijing on November 23, 2023. It’s unclear if there’s been an increase in respiratory illnesses or severe cases among children relative to pre-pandemic years because of limited public data released by China.

Journal Editorial Report:What was accomplished by applauding China's leader? Images: Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyCritics of CEO pay often begin and end with the claim that the CEOs don’t “deserve” their giant salaries, but deserve has nothing to do with it. Large and pre-emptory carrots aren’t about reward after the fact. They are about control before the fact, designed tightly to harness the interests of the key decision maker, especially in a media and legal environment where a loose cannon CEO can do untold damage to organizational interests. By late Sunday, on the question of the day—why was CEO Sam Altman of OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, fired from his job?—ChatGPT had this to say: “The board stated that Altman ‘was not consistently candid in his communications.’ However, specific details surrounding Altman’s departure have not been publicly disclosed.”
