Both aged 20, born six days apart, the young guns who will be contesting the first men's Wimbledon quarter-final involving two players aged 21 or under in the professional era. A potential Wimbledon final between defending champion Djokovic and Alcaraz is the talk of the town, but with a 16-year age gap it is likely to be an intense but short-term rivalry. That is why there is so much excitement brewing about Wednesday's Alcaraz and Rune quarter-finals showdown - it could well be a juicy foretaste of things to come. "You're hoping, as Djokovic and Nadal wind down, you're hoping Alcaraz and Rune in particular step up and have a great rivalry because all sports need it." We played together since we were 12 years old," top seed Alcaraz said after his fourth-round win over Italian Matteo Berrettini on Monday.

He played his part in the highly entertaining encounter, often picking himself up off the ground to hit a winning shot. But he met his match in the 6-foot-7 inch (2.01-metre) Eubanks, whose cheering squad included his occasional mixed doubles partner and compatriot Coco Gauff. "It's surreal, it's unbelievable, I can't believe it," added the American after notching up his ninth straight win on grass. A few weeks after claiming he hated playing on the surface, Eubanks made a u-turn on that assessment. [1/2] Jul 10, 2023; London, United Kingdom; Christopher Eubanks (USA) returns a shot against Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) on day eight at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The American made it into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his first Wimbledon main draw, along the way encountering surreal reminders of his skyrocketting success. Now, he is preparing for a showdown with Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev, who days earlier praised Eubanks for his "total tennis" and fearless style of play. That crowd support could come in handy against mighty Medvedev, against whom he lost in straight sets earlier this year in Miami. "Granted, different court, different surface, different conditions.

Second seed Djokovic will hope his 101st match at Wimbledon - against seventh-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev in the last eight - will mark a return to vintage form. Rybakina, meanwhile, had an easier route into the quarter-finals after her Brazilian opponent retired with a back injury while trailing the third seed 4-1 in the first set. "It was really unlucky for Beatriz and I hope she gets better," added Rybakina. It was also a day to rejoice for fellow American Eubanks, who got past Tsitsipas 3-6 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4 6-4 to make the quarter-finals on his Wimbledon debut. "I feel like I'm living a dream right now, this is absolutely insane," said Eubanks, who meets Medvedev next.

Christopher Eubanks advanced to the third round at Wimbledon after beating Cam Norrie on Friday. Photo: Alastair Grant/Associated PressLONDON—Christopher Eubanks was just eight minutes into his first match on a Wimbledon stadium court when his confidence began to surge. Alcaraz passes test at Wimbledon, Rybakina on fire

In the men's draw, third seed Daniil Medvedev and fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas both swept through while 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini set up a showdown with Alcaraz. With the big-serving Berrettini up next, Alcaraz, who was a break down in the fourth set, said Saturday's test was just what he needed. Rybakina ensured a demoralising 48 hours for Britain as she demolished Katie Boulter 6-1 6-1 to end home hopes in the singles. But she lasted only 57 minutes as Kazakhstan's Rybakina sent out an ominous warning to those wanting her title. Second seed Sabalenka is also in the groove heading into the second week after a 6-2 6-3 defeat of Anna Blinkova.

Inspired Eubanks upsets Briton Norrie
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
"There's tons of really good tennis players who play professional tennis who never get the chance to play the number one Brit at Wimbledon in an atmosphere like this," Eubanks said. For a player making his Wimbledon debut, Eubanks showed no signs of nerves as Norrie failed to win a point off the American's serve until the seventh game of the match. Rallies were also in short supply as Eubanks mixed power and finesse with his serve and volley game to baffle Norrie to take the opening set. Errors crept into his game in the second set, however, which allowed Norrie to race into a 3-0 lead and the Briton, egged on by a vocal home crowd, levelled the match. Eubanks's power game seemed unsustainable, but the American broke early in the third set and clinched it.

"That's a very different person now, I can tell you that much," Eubanks said when asked about his earlier view of playing on grass. Clijsters, a Wimbledon singles semi-finalist in 2003 and 2006, sympathised with Eubanks' frustrations and suggested that, among other things, he focus on daily footwork exercises. "Hey, if she asks, she's going to get it," said world number 43 Eubanks. "Obviously I think the vast majority of the crowd out there today was supporting Cam, rightfully so," said Eubanks. If I have to keep doing this, I could try to find something else to do with my time'," said Eubanks.
