Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said the coffee chain is committed to bargaining in good faith with the union that represents many of its baristas, as the two sides work to craft a labor deal. He was responding to a letter from the Starbucks Workers United bargaining delegation sent a day earlier, ahead of another bargaining session between Starbucks and the union. Three years ago, Starbucks baristas started unionizing under Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union. Niccol joined Starbucks several weeks ago, making him a newcomer to the union discussions. Today, Workers United represents more than 490 of Starbucks' U.S. cafes and more than 10,500 of its employees.

The Coast Guard opened a public hearing earlier this month that is part of a high level investigation into the cause of the implosion. Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. Wreckage of the Titan was subsequently found on the ocean floor about 330 yards (300 meters) off the bow of the Titanic, Coast Guard officials said. OceanGate said it has been fully cooperating with the Coast Guard and NTSB investigations since they began.

"I was sort of raised that you do a hard day's work and you're honest, and things will work out for you — it's a two-way street between you and your employer," he says. After publishing the article about Gen Z's predisposition to take time away, I got a lot of feedback from older generations. Some of it was predictable "the kids these days" complaints lamenting that nobody wants to work nowadays, that work ethic has disappeared, etc. "When you work for yourself, you're working for one of the biggest jerks you've ever worked for," he said. None of the boomers I talked to was in favor of people calling out of work willy-nilly.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun testifies before a subcommittee of the Senate Energy and National Resources Committee on the company's safety culture, following a number of recent incidents on Boeing airplanes, Washington, DC, June 18, 2024. A U.S. Senate panel investigating Boeing 's safety culture on Wednesday faulted the planemaker's quality practices and oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration citing documents obtained in an ongoing investigation. The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which is holding a hearing Wednesday with FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker, said Boeing workers continue to feel pressure to prioritize speed of production over quality. Boeing said it has "taken important steps to foster a safety culture that empowers and encourages all employees to share their voice, but it will require continuous focus." The FAA did not comment but Whitaker said at a House hearing Tuesday that Boeing needed to undertake significant safety culture improvements that might not be completed for years.

The delivery service is working with at least two local delivery providers, one in Austin, Texas, and another in Fresno, California, through its Local Commerce Service Partner Program. That's a big change from the gig workers that DoorDash and other delivery services have largely built their businesses on. Uber, Lyft, Instacart, and other delivery companies have also relied on gig workers to build their businesses, leading millions of people in the US into the gig economy. Gig workers lack many of the benefits and legal protections that employees get. The amount delivery services pay gig workers has been going up in some cities, too.

Hong Kong CNN —Beijing says it’s investigating fashion retailer PVH Corp, the owner of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, for refusing to source cotton from the Xinjiang region, in a move that could lead to sanctions on an American company with major business interests in China. The ministry said in a statement that New York-based PVH (PVH) is suspected of “violating normal market transaction principles” by boycotting cotton sourced from China’s far western region of Xinjiang. Being banned by China would deal a big blow to PVH, which, like other global fashion firms, sources extensively in the country. Western apparel brands have faced pressure in China over their position on Xinjiang cotton before. In March 2021, Swedish multinational H&M was pulled from major e-commerce stores in China and blocked by several major navigation, review and rating apps.

The Securities and Exchange Commission charged Harvest Volatility Management and Merrill Lynch on Wednesday for exceeding clients' predesignated investment limits over a two-year period. The SEC said Merrill connected its clients to Harvest while it knew that investors' accounts were exceeding the set exposure levels under Harvest's management. Both Merrill and Harvest received larger management fees while investors were exposed to greater financial risks, the SEC said. Both companies were found to neglect policies and procedures that could have been adopted to alert investors of exposure exceeding the designated limits. "Today's action holds Merrill and Harvest accountable for dropping the ball in executing these basic duties to their clients, even as their clients' financial exposure grew well beyond predetermined limits."

Less than two months into his tenure as CEO, Ortberg has largely understood the assignment. See here: We’re nearly two weeks into a strike by Boeing’s largest labor union. Initially, Ortberg seemed to have buy-in from labor leaders, who publicly acknowledged that the new boss was walking into a conflict that predated him by 16 years.
