Opinion | Nikki Haley Is the Best Trump Alternative
  + stars: | 2023-08-24 | by ( David Brooks | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
She was the candidate brave enough to state the obvious truth that Trump took decades of G.O.P. The other candidates assumed the usual conservative postures about cutting taxes and spending, but she introduced the reality: Under Trump, the G.O.P. She seems to be one of the few candidates who understands that to run against Trump you have to run against Trump. Haley, by contrast, seems to believe that voters are intelligent enough to be treated as adults. But if any of my friends and acquaintances want to stop Trump, this is their moment to give Haley her chance.

Donald Trump was unmentioned for large stretches of Wednesday's GOP presidential debate. She added "Donald Trump added $8 trillion to our debt, and our kids are never going to forgive us for this." Trump declared on Sunday night that he would not show up for the first major evening in the GOP nomination contest. Donald Trump's absence led to a night of barbs between the remaining GOP presidential hopefuls. The first presidential debate of this cycle was dominated by attacks on Vivek Ramaswamy. Despite getting attacked on all sides by his fellow candidates, Ramaswamy largely held his own on stage Wednesday, drawing large rounds of applause from the crowd throughout the night. Former President Donald Trump said he felt no need to attend a debate while he holds a double-digit national lead. Namely, DeSantis refused to say if he'd support a federal 6-week abortion policy, simply saying ""I'm gonna stand on the side of life."

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. Any debate that doesn’t feature Chris Christie at the front of the highlight reel is a bad night for Christie.

To former Vice President Mike Pence, he’s “Vih-veck.” To a “Fox and Friends” panelist on Thursday morning, he was “Vee-veck.” And to some Iowa voters, it’s “Vy-vick” — if they said his name at all. Vivek Ramaswamy, a tech entrepreneur running for president who has climbed the polls in recent weeks, has branded himself as a political newcomer who, despite participating in his first Republican debate Wednesday night, seemed at ease bringing the event to near-chaos several times as he sparred with the likes of Mr. Pence and Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor. A different hurdle he may face, however, is getting others to say his name correctly. The son of Indian Americans, Mr. Ramaswamy has both leaned into and away from his racial background. He has often expressed gratitude that his parents immigrated to the “greatest nation on Earth,” and on Wednesday, he echoed a line from former President Barack Obama’s speech onstage when he introduced himself as a “skinny guy with a funny last name.” (Mr. Ramaswamy has said that “Vivek” rhymes with “cake” and pronounces his last name “Rah-muh-swah-mee.”)When Sean Hannity, the Fox News host, asked after the debate why Mr. Ramaswamy hadn’t corrected the mispronunciation sooner, the candidate laughed and said, “I appreciate best efforts.”

Here are four takeaways from the debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin:NEW KID IN TOWNIn his first political debate, Vivek Ramaswamy, 38, was widely expected to be a wild card. “Can't we all agree that we're not going to put a woman in jail or give her the death penalty if she gets an abortion?” said Haley, the only woman on the debate stage. For the candidates on the debate stage, it was by talking about on how regular Americans are struggling with the cost of items such as groceries, fuel and cars.

Vivek Ramaswamy announced his candidacy for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination in February 2023. The biotech entrepreneur, who is the son of Indian immigrants, was Harvard and Yale-educated. He became a conservative firebrand after writing anti-woke books and regularly appearing on Fox News. Though his campaign is picking up a little steam, he's still a longshot for the GOP nomination. But the conservative firebrand says he has big plans to start a "cultural movement."

Candidates took turns sparring directly with Ramaswamy on foreign policy, political experience and other issues. The biotech entrepreneur was at center stage tonight because of his polling numbers, which placed him and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis behind frontrunner Donald Trump.

CNN —If Vladimir Putin was watching the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night, he would have found one more reason to dig in for a long war of attrition in Ukraine. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy acted as Trump’s stand-in, mining a deep seam of skepticism over the war among GOP grassroots voters. Chris Christie, who recently returned from Ukraine, warned: “This is the Vladimir Putin, who Donald Trump called brilliant and a genius. The debate underscored one of the tragedies of the war for Ukraine. They can’t control what Putin does, which means their fate will also be on the ballot in the US in 2024.

How does Mr. DeSantis fit into this rubric? His decision to avoid fights over Ukraine and Jan. 6 now looks like a deft effort to avoid dividing his potential supporters. No, he didn’t go after Mr. Trump, but in pulling his punches he avoided alienating voters who like the former president. Perhaps surprisingly, Mr. DeSantis seemed to come out of the debate entirely unscathed: No one seriously attacked him at all. After all, he entered the debate in second place in high-quality polls and he’s always been the clear second choice of Mr. Trump’s supporters.

Republican hopefuls’ deficit goals are all talk

Participants in the party’s first debate for the 2024 election on Wednesday night promised to shrink the government’s budget shortfall. Yet Republicans have a bad track record for cutting federal debt, and some candidates are already touting pricey projects and tax cuts. The last Republican president to run a budget surplus was George W. Bush in 2001, but even that year was partly influenced by the cost-cutting measures put in place by his Democratic predecessor. With Congress balking at such a combinations, Republican candidates’ plans are all talk, little hope of action. That budget deficit is 122% larger than the shortfall seen in the same period last year.

Vivek Ramaswamy is not a nobody anymore: The other candidates have taken notice of Ramaswamy, and they don’t seem to like him very much. The 38-year-old outsider who started the race polling at 0% has moved up in polls for his unconventional ideas. Several of the candidates took a shot at him. Attacks included everything from his lack of political experience, the way he answered questions and his foreign policy views. It remains to be seen if his combative, unconventional style was effective, but he certainly took advantage of the spotlight.

PoliticsWho is Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican presidential hopeful? PostedMultimillionaire Vivek Ramaswamy has a chance to build on the attention he has been getting in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination at Wednesday night's debate. Here are some facts about the former biotech executive's life and politics.
Persons: Vivek Ramaswamy
The debate – hosted by Fox News, which has amplified many of Trump’s false claims he won the 2020 election – exemplified the impossible conundrum at the center of the GOP race. Trump, exploiting his unrelenting support among GOP primary voters, has pulled off the feat of wielding multiple indictments as a political shield. But Ken Cuccinelli, who is backing DeSantis despite serving in Trump’s administration, argued that the Florida governor had used Trump’s absence to make a valuable connection with Republican voters. So will Trump stick with his strategy of refusing to elevate his rivals by appearing with them on stage – for instance, at the next GOP debate at the Ronald Reagan library in California next month? “In the next debate, there’s not going to be any Atlanta surrender and counterprogramming,” Kall said.

The former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who short-circuited Marco Rubio in a 2016 debate, entered the race with the goal of hammering Mr. Trump over his attempts to overturn his loss in 2020. Initially, he went after Mr. Ramaswamy as the next best thing, saying that he “sounds like ChatGPT” and likening him to Barack Obama; Mr. Ramaswamy reminded Mr. Christie that the then-governor notoriously hugged Mr. Obama in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, just before the 2012 election. Around an hour in, Mr. Baier finally invoked Mr. Trump — “the elephant not in the room” — and his indictments, to the boos of the crowd. The hand raise began with Mr. Ramaswamy and moved across the stage like a sluggish wave at a stadium, stopping at Mr. Christie. But Mr. Trump was not there to make his own noise, which left more room for one of the main goals of a first debate: to let candidates introduce themselves to a broader audience.

The candidates were clashing and the Milwaukee crowd was getting rowdy. After an hour of policy discussion, the first Republican primary debate of 2023 had turned chaotic when the Fox News moderators brought up “the elephant not in the room.”Donald J. Trump was not onstage on Wednesday, but the mere mention of his name created fireworks. Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor, urged Republicans “to stop normalizing” the former president’s conduct. His rival Vivek Ramaswamy responded that Mr. Trump was “the best president of the 21st century.” A sleepy debate had yielded to a gloves-off battle over the future of the Republican Party. As the audience drowned out Mr. Christie with boos, Bret Baier, one of the moderators, paused and turned in his chair.
