The comments ricocheted across the House Democratic Caucus – especially for the 15 House Democrats who didn’t vote for it, all of them members of color, some of them Muslim-Americans. An array of House Democrats are pushing unequivocal support for Israel, while a number of progressives have grown increasingly critical of the offensive impacting Palestinian civilians and are upping pressure on the Biden administration to call for a ceasefire. And he is also dealing with a push by Jewish House members to have a more prominent seat at the leadership table. Democrats say the divide is being reflected in their states – and is hurting the president. At a news conference last week, Jeffries was asked about a six-figure ad buy from the Democratic Majority for Israel, a pro-Israel group, criticizing Tlaib.

Data on the characteristics of newly constructed homes for 2022, released in June by the Census Bureau, revealed homes continued to get bigger after shrinking from 2015 to 2020. A higher share of four-bedroom houses were built, most constructed with air conditioning, and more houses are doing away with fireplaces. In 2022, nearly half of all homes constructed had four bedrooms, compared to two-bedroom homes at 9%. Houses have remained relatively the same height, with a slightly higher percentage of one-story homes and slightly fewer percentage of two-story homes compared to 10 years ago. The median are now comes in at around 2,300 square feet for houses built in 2022.

REUTERS/Toby Melville/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - British house prices ended six months of consecutive falls in October, reflecting a lack of homes being put up for sale, but prices are still lower than a year ago, mortgage lender Halifax said on Tuesday. Halifax, part of Lloyds Banking Group (LLOY.L), said house prices in October were 1.1% higher than the month before, the first increase since March on a seasonally adjusted basis, after a 0.3% monthly drop in September. This is likely to have strengthened prices in the short-term, rather than prices being driven by buyer demand, which remains weak overall," Kim Kinnaird, director of Halifax Mortgages, said. Compared with a year earlier, house prices in October were 3.2% lower versus a 4.5% annual decline in September, leaving the average house price at 281,974 pounds ($347,279), nearly 10,000 pounds lower than a year earlier. Halifax said it expected further falls in house prices, and a return to growth in 2025.

Wannabe homebuyers are getting hammered by a painful combination of high mortgage rates and high home prices. For the first time, monthly payments are above $2,500 – and that doesn’t even include taxes, insurance or other fees. Turmoil in the bond market and the Federal Reserve’s war on inflation have driven up mortgage rates to levels unseen since 2000. Aided by emergency action from the Fed, mortgage rates briefly tumbled below 2.7% in late 2020 and early 2021. At today’s rates, monthly payments on a $500,000 home would stand at roughly $3,265 after putting 20% down.

The growing reliance on 401(k) plans as a source of urgent cash is further evidence of consumer financial stress heading into the 2024 election year. Despite high GDP and low unemployment, some Americans are clearly facing a cash crunch and struggling to pay the bills. Bank of America said the number of 401(k) participants taking hardship distributions increased by 27% from the first quarter of this year. Bank of America found 401(k) contribution rates were steady during the third quarter at 6.5%. Just under 3% of those age groups are cutting back on their retirement savings.

British house prices surged during the COVID-19 pandemic due to low interest rates, greater demand and temporary tax breaks. Halifax's house price index is still 18% higher than it was in February 2020, despite a 4% fall since its peak in June 2022. Halifax said it expected house prices to fall further this year, with a return to growth in 2025. "The high cost of borrowing alone is not sufficient to trigger the leg down in house prices we predicted," Capital economist Andrew Wishart said.

Ohio Votes to Guarantee Abortion Rights

Ohio voters overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion rights, delivering a landslide-sized message Tuesday night to politicians that the near-total ban GOP lawmakers support is unacceptable to the voting public. President Joe Biden, who has made abortion rights a central theme of his struggling 2024 reelection effort, praised the vote. Nebraska's proposed referendum would ban abortion, while the remaining states are considering initiatives to protect reproductive rights. Advocates believe the abortion rights referendum was a driver of that vote. Broken down, that includes 46% of Democrats, 23% of independents and 20% of Republicans, suggesting Democrats are more likely to make abortion rights a defining factor in their votes.

The increases in credit card delinquency were the sharpest among borrowers in the range of 30 to 39 years old, according to the New York Fed. Newly delinquent auto loan balances continued to climb, as well, with transitions into serious delinquencies hitting 13-year highs, survey data showed. Still, thanks mostly to higher-quality mortgage loans, overall delinquencies remain below pre-pandemic levels, New York Fed researchers said. Credit card balances, which in the second quarter surpassed the trillion-dollar mark for the first time, continued to grow at historic rates. This year is on pace to have the lowest origination values since 2014, New York Fed data shows.

It’s also a clear sign that the gun safety movement needs to get to work reforming the Supreme Court. Regardless of how Rahimi is decided, the Supreme Court has already done enormous damage to our ability to keep Americans safe from gun violence. We need Supreme Court expansion to restore balance and sanity to the Court. Fortunately, Supreme Court expansion is clearly constitutional: Congress has done it multiple times throughout American history and we can do it again. Expanding the Supreme Court would be yet another way we can fight the war against senseless gun violence.

Speaker Mike Johnson is less wealthy than most lawmakers and doesn't appear to have a DC residence. But where does the man who just recently ascended to the next spot in the line of succession sleep when he's in Washington, DC? Most likely in his small congressional office on the unglamorous, fluorescent-lit fifth floor of the Cannon House Office Building, according to several lawmakers and a long-time friend of Rep. Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House. There are likely dozens of lawmakers sleeping in their offices each night, and some well-known former House members have been known to do it, including Florida Gov. Meanwhile, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — one of the richest members of Congress — has a residence in Washington, DC's Georgetown neighborhood.

Unsubsidized monthly premiums — the “sticker” price — for a benchmark silver plan are rising 4.5 percent on average as a result of inflation and greater use of health care services since the pandemic, according to a KFF analysis. (Plans are grouped by metal levels, ranging from bronze plans, which have low premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs, to gold and platinum plans, which have higher premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs.) The average monthly premium for a benchmark silver plan is expected to be about $477 for an individual, and the average lowest-cost bronze plan $364, KFF found. Most marketplace customers, however, don’t pay those sticker prices, because tax credits lower their monthly cost — to zero, in some cases. Premium tax credits are based on a family’s size and income and the cost of plans in the area.

Eaton Vance, a U.S. asset manager, peddles investment products that Morgan Stanley now funnels through sales teams in far-flung markets. George Santos (R., N.Y.), who made a series of bold fabrications in running for office and faces federal fraud charges related to his 2022 campaign. Two-thirds of House lawmakers would need to vote in favor of expelling Santos to remove him, and the effort was seen as facing an uphill battle, with top Republicans not signaling their support. Expelling Santos would cut into the Republicans’ narrow 221-212 majority, and some lawmakers have said any such move should wait until after his criminal case is resolved or the House Ethics Committee has completed its probe.

When I was born, in 1946, Lima was home to 640,000 people. Now, as I’m about to turn 77 in the year 2023, Lima is a city of 10 million. In some ways, you could say that I’ve survived alongside the city. For Lima has taken the white veil; and there is a higher horror in this whiteness of her woe. I myself have approached Lima from different points of view: I’ve written stories about young people in the margins, in the working-class neighborhoods of Lima, and also, as the son of Japanese parents who settled in Peru, I’ve set Limeñan nikkeis to fiction.
