The most obvious way to help colleges level the field among students is to level the field among colleges. Harvard University recently received a gift of $300 million, the University of Chicago received a gift of $100 million and Columbia University received a gift of $175 million. I asked Elsa Núñez, president of Eastern Connecticut State University, what her institution, with its modest $50 million endowment, could do with a $100 million gift.

So these elite places become these little islands where rich people pass down their advantages to their kids. Like everyone else, by today’s standards, I wouldn’t qualify for any of the elite schools. And yet in those days, the University of Chicago, where I ended up going, admitted 70 percent of the applicants. The process is not only divisive but doesn’t give people later in life a fair chance to alter the trajectory of their life. In recent years, Goodenough and his university team had also been exploring new directions for energy storage, including a “glass” battery with solid-state electrolyte and lithium or sodium metal electrodes. Goodenough also was an early developer of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes as an alternative to nickel- and cobalt-based cathodes. After completing a bachelors in mathematics at Yale University, Goodenough received an masters and a PhD in physics from the University of Chicago.

June 25 (Reuters) - Law-enforcement officials and retailers are investigating a recent wave of bomb threats across the United States, targeting grocery operators and other stores, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. Retail companies including Kroger (KR.N), Walmart (WMT.N) and Amazon's (AMZN.O) Whole Foods Market, among others, have received bomb threats at their stores in recent months, the report said, adding that some callers demanded gift cards, bitcoin or money and threatened to detonate bombs if payments were not made. A similar incident was reported in a suburb north of Chicago, where a caller told a Whole Foods Market employee a pipe bomb had been placed in the store and demanded $5,000 in bitcoin, according to the Wall Street Journal. According to the report it is unclear to authorities whether the threats are part of an organized effort. A spate of retailers have been hit by bomb threats in recent months, The Wall Street Journal reported. Retailers affected included Walmart, Kroger, and Whole Foods, the Journal reported. Walmart, Krogers, and Whole Foods stores across the country are among those targeted with threats and ransom demands this year. Whole Foods recently told managers to go over bomb threat protocols with employees, according to a memo seen by the newspaper. A group of Target stores across several states were evacuated earlier this month after bomb threats were sent to local news outlets.
