Delegates began casting virtual ballots for the nomination Thursday, a process that will continue until Monday evening. “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” said Harris, who joined the virtual event. They belie all the complaints until recently about the barren Democratic Party bench, constituting a whole gleaming bleachers section of their own. You allow yourself the bounty of Josh Shapiro, Mark Kelly, Andy Beshear and Tim Walz, all of whom reportedly reached the finals of consideration to join Harris on the Democratic ticket. You deny yourself the splendor of Gretchen Whitmer, Gina Raimondo and Pete Buttigieg, all of whom have been deemed long shots or nonstarters for reasons apart from their political talents. With the stakes as high as they are in this election, risks that big are arguably unaffordable.

As a Republican governor who has won four elections in a purple state, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to win. Catchy one-liners — calling Vice President Harris a “bum,” “not a serious person” and “bottom of the barrel” — might rile up the base, but they do little to connect with independent voters needed to close the deal in November. Independent voters are independent for a reason. They are not driven to the polls by personal attacks. The message from both sides must be inspirational, focused and about the results that can be delivered for the American people.

There’s a lot of talk that Kamala Harris picked Tim Walz to prevent Josh Shapiro’s views on the Middle East from becoming a distraction. But the more relevant reason that Walz was chosen is electoral. And if Harris narrowly loses Pennsylvania and thus the election, the failure to pick Shapiro will reverberate for generations. By contrast, Walz — a 24-year veteran of the Army National Guard — graduated from high school in a Nebraska town of 400 and later coached the Mankato West Scarlets to a Minnesota high school football championship. But Walz, an authentic rural voice, might change that outcome and reduce Trump’s share to 55 percent from roughly 60 percent in enough counties.
