A Republican state senator from West Virginia is being asked to step down by his local GOP party chair after being arrested on a drunk driving charge — his second arrest in as many months. State Sen. CNN —A New Mexico judge on Thursday is set to consider the “Rust” movie armorer’s motion to be released from prison, months after similar charges against actor Alec Baldwin were dismissed due to prosecutorial misconduct. At her trial, prosecutors argued she repeatedly violated safety protocol and was negligent in performing her duties, allowing six live rounds on to the set. Her defense attorney argued she was scapegoated for the safety failures of film set management and other crew members. But just days after his trial began, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer threw out the charges and ruled prosecutors did not properly turn over evidence to the defense. The judge called the withholding of evidence “intentional and deliberate” and dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be brought again.

The scientists had previously documented orcas (Orcinus orca) in the region chasing both dusky dolphins and long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis). Dusky dolphins measure about 7 feet (2 meters) long and weigh up to 187 pounds (85 kilograms). The Humboldt Current orcas weren’t eating dolphins exclusively; they hunted leatherback sea turtles, South American fur seals and Humboldt penguins, according to the study. But Humboldt Current orcas have a smaller white eye patch than known Type A orcas. A similar interaction was previously documented in Australia between an orca and a diver, but had never been observed in the Humboldt Current.

MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia could use nuclear weapons if it was attacked by any state and that any conventional attack on Russia that was supported by a nuclear power would be considered to be a joint attack. Putin, opening a meeting of Russia’s Security Council attended by top officials, said that proposals had been made to change Russia’s nuclear doctrine and said he would like to underscore one of the proposed key changes. “It is proposed that aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state, be considered as their joint attack on the Russian Federation,” Putin said. Russia, Putin said, also reserved the right to use nuclear weapons if it or Belarus were the subject of aggression, including by conventional weapons. Putin said the clarifications were carefully calibrated and commensurate with the modern military threats facing Russia.

An explosion on Wednesday rocked the California courthouse where Michael Jackson was tried and acquitted nearly 20 years ago, authorities said. Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and a man was taken into custody shortly after deputies responded to the incident at 8:48 a.m. local time, officials said. Jackson, who died in 2009, was accused of sexually abusing a little boy at his Neverland Ranch home. He was acquitted on all charges at the 2005 trial held in Santa Maria. Members of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, voted by 397-1 in favor of the new adoption ban in the first of three readings suggesting that the legislation, which has already been conceptually approved by the government, will become law. “This decision is aimed at protecting childhood and traditional values,” Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Duma and a close ally of President Vladimir Putin said after it had been voted on. “It is necessary to protect our children from the dangers they may face when they are adopted or fostered by citizens of foreign countries where gender reassignment is allowed.”Volodin said dozens of Western countries allowed people to change their gender. Vasily Piskarev, a senior lawmaker from the ruling United Russia party and another co-author of the legislation, has alleged that adoptees risk being forced to change their gender or falling victim to sexual exploitation in the West.
