Many tech workers in California moved to Austin during the pandemic in search of a new lifestyle. Some tech workers say they regret moving there, given its middling tech scene and "fake" atmosphere. They cited several contributing factors, including extreme temperatures, traffic, overcrowding, and — perhaps most surprising — a middling tech scene that fails to live up to the hype. Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, arrives at court as lawyers push to persuade the judge overseeing his fraud case not to jail him ahead of trial, at a courthouse in New York, U.S., August 11, 2023. Bankman-Fried, 31, has pleaded not guilty to fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the November 2022 collapse of his now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange. Bankman-Fried's lawyers said their client wasn't being given time to sort through the deluge, depriving him of his constitutional right to a fair trial. Auto regulators ordered Tesla to hand over data about a hidden Autopilot mode that lets drivers stay hands-free. It reportedly removes a prompt telling drivers to put their hands on the wheel, and was discovered by a software hacker. Typically, if a driver using Tesla's Autopilot or Full Self-Driving feature takes their hands off the wheel, a visual symbol blinks on the car's touch screen. Tesla's manual says that, when using Autopilot, drivers should "keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times." As August is known to be, it's been a rough month-to-date for all three of those stock market benchmarks so far. This past week, the overall market was oversold, according to Jim Cramer's trusted S & P Oscillator. After Friday's strong finish, we'll see if the market's oversold condition abates as two major themes play out in the week ahead: Earnings from two Club names — Salesforce (CRM) and Broadcom (AVGO) — and key economic reports ahead of September's Fed meeting. Outside of the labor market and inflation, we'll also get a look at the housing market with the pending home sales on Wednesday. As we heard from fellow Club name Palo Alto Networks (PANW) last week, companies are growing more cautious and more closely scrutinizing large sales deals.

Monday Monday proved to be a harbinger for the rest of the week, beginning with purchases of GE Healthcare (GEHC) and Stanley Black & Decker (SWK). GE Healthcare and Stanley Black & Decker appeared especially attractive, leading us to buy 100 shares and 150 shares, respectively. For GEHC, we wanted to take advantage of what we believe was an unwarranted decline in the medical technology company's stock price. Our purchase of Starbucks represents another buying-into-post-earnings-weakness situation, as we did with Microsoft and Stanley Black & Decker earlier in the week. That's why on Thursday we took our Nvidia price target to $600 per share from $450, implying roughly 27% upside.
