Melania Trump keeps rejecting Donald Trump's requests to appear with him on the 2024 campaign trail, according to the New York Times. Melania Trump hasn't just been absent from the campaign trail; she also hasn't been at any of Trump's court hearings. Melania Trump appeared with Trump on the campaign trail when he officially announced his 2024 presidential bid in November. When Trump first announced his presidential campaign in 2016, many wondered how Melania Trump — who had previously been ensconced in the fashion world — would make her mark on the campaign trail. While Trump was in office, Melania Trump generally sought to focus on issues affecting children, which she said would also be a priority should her husband win the presidency again.

It was not the first time that Empower Oversight had played a key role in facilitating some of the many Republican investigations into Mr. Biden’s family, his administration, and federal law enforcement. presses forward with inquiries aimed at uncovering wrongdoing by the president, the group has become a critical part of the Republican investigative ecosystem, using its knowledge of Capitol Hill to shepherd through Congress witnesses who can put names, faces and crucial details to the allegations being made. whistle-blowers, Empower Oversight also represents two F.B.I. The Phoenix Zoo has come up with myriad ways to cool off animals in the historic record-breaking heat wave, including hose-downs, mister lines, cooling pads, ponds, mud water, fans and air-conditioned buildings. ORLANDO, Florida, July 20 (Reuters) - Chinese stocks have traded at a discount to global peers for over a decade but have rarely been cheaper than they are now. The fact that U.S. equities are more expensive than Chinese stocks is nothing new. At minimum, investors will need clearer evidence of a turnaround in China's economic and market conditions before moving back into its equities in any great size. The era of double-digit annual GDP growth looks to be over, and challenges are multiple and mounting. Nominal annual GDP growth of 4.8% in the second quarter was lower than real GDP growth of 6.3%, a huge deflation red flag.

Coinbase is a crypto conundrum, squared

Shares in Coinbase got a major boost after money management behemoth BlackRock (BLK.N) applied to launch a bitcoin-backed exchange-traded fund this month with Coinbase as its custodian. Coinbase shares are up nearly 54% in July, handily beating the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC), which rose 4%. Price targets range widely: analysts polled by Refinitiv think Coinbase is worth anywhere from $8 billion to nearly $50 billion. Coinbase investors would therefore be unwise to count on a judge delivering Coinbase a win. Given bitcoin’s current $584 billion market capitalization, that suggests $74 billion of ETFs would not be much of a stretch.

New research is exploring another dimension to the puzzle of how people experience this infection: genes. Hollenbach says it’s the job of HLA molecules to present pieces of proteins to the immune system so they can be recognized if they’re ever encountered again. The researchers then took a closer look at this group to see if there were any similarities in the genes that coded for their HLA molecules, and there were. So folks with these HLA molecules likely already had some preexisting immunity against SARS-CoV2 and were able to clear the virus before it caused symptoms, Hollenbach said. Genes, Zeberg said, are likely only one part of reason why someone develops long Covid, and there are probably a slew of genes involved.

That’s a question that swirls through Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a live-action, you-go-girl fantasia about the world’s most famous doll. The movie opens with a prelude that parodies the “dawn of man” sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (with girls, not ape-men), and then shifts to Barbie Land, a kaleidoscopic wonderland. There, Gerwig sets the scene and tone with Barbie (Margot Robbie) — who calls herself stereotypical Barbie — soon floating out of her Dreamhouse, as if she were being lifted by a giant invisible hand. Written by Gerwig and her partner, Noah Baumbach, the movie introduces Barbie on yet another perfect day in Barbie Land, in which dolls played by humans exist in what resembles a toyland gated community. There, framed by a painted mountain range, Barbie and a diverse group of other Barbies rule, living in homes with few exterior walls.

"High level, we want this to become something like your personal AI friend," said developer Div Garg, whose company MultiOn is beta-testing an AI agent. The race towards increasingly autonomous AI agents has been supercharged by the March release of GPT-4 by developer OpenAI, a powerful upgrade of the model behind ChatGPT - the chatbot that became a sensation when released last November. GPT-4 facilitates the type of strategic and adaptable thinking required to navigate the unpredictable real world, said Vivian Cheng, an investor at venture capital firm CRV who has a focus on AI agents. OpenAI itself is very interested in AI agent technology, according to four people briefed on its plans. There are at least 100 serious projects working to commercialize agents, said Matt Schlicht, who writes a newsletter on AI.

House Democrats are likely to force a vote on censuring Rep. George Santos in the next 2 weeks. With Santos refusing to resign, it's the latest effort to tie his cloud of scandal to the rest of the GOP. So Democrats, eager to tie the rest of the Republican Party to Santos' cloud of scandal, are taking advantage. House Democrats are set to introduce a resolution on Monday to censure the New York Republican, and intend to force a vote on the matter in the next two weeks. But given Santos' poor reputation among his Republican colleagues, it's unlikely the congressman would receive the same groundswell of support.

U.S. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan speaks at a press briefing at the White House on Dec. 12, 2022. A "small group" of House Republicans have "essentially created a trap" by loading the National Defense Authorization Act with a wide array of domestic-focused amendments, U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan said Sunday. "This should be an area where politics stops and national security starts." Sullivan was referring to myriad amendments put forward by House Republicans. Those include efforts that would end various diversity initiatives within the Defense Department, would limit active-duty transgender servicemembers from accessing gender-affirming care, and perhaps most controversially, would prevent the Defense Department from reimbursing or paying for abortion-related expenses for active-duty servicemembers.

"Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else," Musk wrote in response to a tweet. Musk took over Twitter in October of last year in a deal valued at around $44 billion, including about $13 billion in debt. He also claimed at that time that the company was "roughly breakeven," and expected to become cash flow positive within the next quarter. A number of widely followed accounts on Twitter posted that they were dismayed they did not qualify to earn income from the program yet. It's not clear how much Twitter paid creators in total in this first round of payments.

The traditional gatekeepers of knowledge — librarians, journalists and government officials — have largely been replaced by technological gatekeepers — search engines, artificial intelligence chatbots and social media feeds. Whatever their flaws, the old gatekeepers were, at least on paper, beholden to the public. The reforms also require large tech platforms to audit their algorithms to determine how they affect democracy, human rights and the physical and mental health of minors and other users. To hold them accountable, the law also requires large tech platforms like Facebook and Twitter to provide researchers with access to real-time data from their platforms. But there is a crucial element that has yet to be decided by the European Union: whether journalists will get access to any of that data.

Jamie Dimon flagged a long list of threats facing the US economy on Friday. He's worried about consumer spending, inflation, quantitative tightening, fiscal deficits, and war. "The war in Ukraine continues, which in addition to the huge humanitarian crisis for Ukrainians, has large potential effects on geopolitics and the global economy," he added. If any of those dangers hit the US economy, it's unclear whether they would cause a "soft landing, a mild recession, or a hard recession," he added. Dimon shared similar concerns in an interview with The Economist released earlier this week, and has previously warned there are myriad threats facing the global economy.

“Addressing the crisis of loneliness and isolation is one of our generation’s greatest challenges,” wrote Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in The Times in April, discussing a national framework for rebuilding social connection to combat what he called an “epidemic” of loneliness. If loneliness is an epidemic, how do you treat it? This calls to mind a trip to the pharmacy to pick up a bottle of pills, but treating loneliness the same way doctors treat high cholesterol isn’t exactly the idea here. Even Dr. Cacioppo, who has dedicated her life to studying human connection, including pharmaceutical solutions for loneliness, questions the value of medicalizing it. “We need to be accountable for the well-being of our friends and teammates and others.”Declaring loneliness an epidemic first requires an understanding of what loneliness is and how it works in the brain.

Does Gen X Have No Style?
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( Fiorella Valdesolo | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
IF MEMES dictated a generation’s cultural currency, Gen X would be irrelevant. Across social and mainstream media, it is baby boomers, millennials and Gen Z who are mocked for their myriad sartorial missteps. Consider the savage TikTok attacks that GenZers wage on millennials’ love of side parts and skinny jeans or the pervasive “OK, boomer” taunt. How has Gen X (that includes me and anyone else born between 1965 and 1980) sidestepped meme-ification? Or is it that we, in 2023, have no distinct style at all?

BRUSSELS, July 13 (Reuters) - Alphabet (GOOGL.O) said it is rolling out its artificial- intelligence chatbot, Bard, in Europe and Brazil on Thursday, the product's biggest expansion since its February launch and pitting it against Microsoft (MSFT.O)-backed rival ChatGPT. Bard and ChatGPT are human-sounding programs that use generative artificial intelligence to hold conversations with users and answer myriad prompts. Earlier this week, billionaire Elon Musk also launched his long-teased artificial-intelligence startup xAI, whose team includes several former engineers at Google, Microsoft and OpenAI. Krawczyk said Google had since then met the watchdogs to reassure them on issues relating to transparency, choice and control. In a briefing with journalists, Amar Subramanya, engineering vice president of Bard, added that users could opt out of their data being collected.

Disney's Bob Iger said the company's TV and cable businesses may not be core. Disney's no-growth TV and cable businesses "may not be core" to the company and it will be "expansive" about how it treats them, CEO Bob Iger said. Iger said that while cable TV had declined faster than he expected, Disney's parks business is doing well, the studio business has been successful, and streaming has a bright future. There's been industry speculation that Disney might sell ESPN; Iger stressed that Disney was committed to the business. On recent box office misses in Pixar's "Elemental" and "The Little Mermaid," Iger acknowledged Disney's zeal to grow its streaming business contributed to some "disappointments."

In mid-2020 Rome secured the lion's share of a 724-billion-euro kitty aimed at helping EU members emerge from COVID greener and more tech-friendly. Italy's 191.5 billion euros ($210 billion) of cheap loans and grants, to be received in tranches through 2026, was intended for productive investments in the bloc's most chronically stagnant economy. MICRO-PROJECTSMore than half the EU money is meant to go on digitalisation and ecological transition, with the rest devoted to sustainable transport, education, social cohesion and health. The government is still awaiting a 19-billion-euro tranche of the EU funds blocked in March over missed policy targets stemming from 2022.
