REUTERS/Victoria Klesty/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) is spending billions of dollars to boost output and ease shortages of its hugely popular, highly effective weight-loss medicine Wegovy. FILL-FINISHNovo has hired Catalent (CTLT.N), a large U.S. contract drug manufacturer, to fill injection pens for Wegovy at two of that company's plants: in Brussels and in Bloomington, Indiana. Novo has also hired another U.S. firm, Thermo Fisher (TMO.N), as a Wegovy pen filler. COMPONENTSThe Wegovy injection pens for the U.S. market slightly differ from those sold in the European markets including Norway, Denmark, Germany and UK, where it has so far launched.

Election Day is a year away, but key allies of former President Donald J. Trump are already thinking about staffing a potential administration, including by filling White House and agency legal positions with aggressive and ideologically like-minded lawyers. Trump allies are preparing to populate a new administration with a different breed of lawyer — a departure from the type that stymied part of his first-term agenda and that despite their mainstream conservative credentials are seen as too cautious by people close to the former president. They are seeking lawyers in federal agencies and in the White House committed to his “America First” ideology and willing to use edgy theories to advance his cause. It is too early to say with any certainty whom Mr. Trump would select were he to win a second term starting in 2025. But several conservative nonprofits, staffed by people who are likely to take on senior White House positions if there is a second Trump administration, have been putting together lists of prospects.

Arexvy, launched in the United States recently, recorded third quarter sales of 709 million pounds ($862 million), trouncing analysts' expectations of 358 million pounds, according to a company-compiled consensus. GSK accounts for close to two-thirds of RSV shots given in the United States since early September, according to IQVIA data. Full-year sales are seen between 900 million pounds and 1 billion pounds for the shot, GSK said. The company faces about 79,000 cases related to Zantac in the United States, with 73,000 of them in Delaware and scheduled for trial starting January 2024. For the third quarter, Shingrix, the company's top-selling drug for shingles, generated 825 million pounds in sales.

BEIJING — China signaled support for property developers and resolving local government debt problems in a high-level financial meeting that ended Tuesday, according to a state media readout. Such twice-a-decade financial work conferences tend to set long-term policy directions, which then pave the way for more detailed moves. "Policymakers would establish long-term effective mechanism to resolve local government debt and 'optimize the structure of central and local government debt,'" the report said. Beijing began cracking down on property developers' high reliance on debt for growth in 2020. The massive real estate sector has slumped amid developer defaults and falling home sales.

A Colorado judge on Wednesday refused a request from lawyers for former President Donald J. Trump to throw out a case challenging his eligibility to hold office again, saying she was not yet prepared to decide on what she called “significant legal issues, many of which have never been decided by any court.”The decision by the judge, Sarah B. Wallace, means the trial will continue through the rest of the week before a final ruling. It came after a lawyer for Mr. Trump had made a motion for a “directed verdict” — essentially a conclusion, even before the defense had called any witnesses, that no legally sufficient basis existed for the plaintiffs to prevail. The Trump team argued that his words and actions leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol were definitively protected by the First Amendment. Judge Wallace, who is presiding over the case in a state district court in Denver, declined to grant the motion. The case — one of several similar ones around the country — was filed by six Colorado voters who argue that Mr. Trump is disqualified under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars from office anyone who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the Constitution after having taken an oath to support it.

Close allies of Donald J. Trump are preparing to populate a new administration with a more aggressive breed of right-wing lawyer, dispensing with traditional conservatives who they believe stymied his agenda in his first term. The allies have been drawing up lists of lawyers they view as ideologically and temperamentally suited to serve in a second Trump administration. Now, as Trump allies grow more confident in an election victory next fall, several outside groups, staffed by former Trump officials who are expected to serve in senior roles if he wins, have begun parallel personnel efforts. But in a striking shift, Trump allies are building new recruiting pipelines separate from the Federalist Society. In addition, The New York Times interviewed former senior lawyers in the Trump administration and other allies who have remained close to the president and are likely to serve in a second term.

A structure is engulfed in flames as a wildfire called the Highland Fire burns in Aguanga, California, on Oct. 30, 2023. Roughly 4,000 residents in Southern California have been ordered to evacuate their homes due to a raging fire in the small town of Aguanga in Riverside County, which spread further overnight. In the evening, it was reclassified as a "critical rate" spread and had grown to more than 1,200 acres. On Monday, 1,139 homes near the area were ordered to evacuate, equating to about 4,000 people, according to Maggie Cline De La Rosa, a spokesperson for the county fire department. The National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert to surrounding neighborhoods due to the windblown dust and smoke of the wildfire.

Former President Donald J. Trump sued Michigan’s top elections official, seeking to ensure he would be on the ballot for the 2024 presidential election. In a 64-page filing on Monday, Mr. Trump’s lawyers said that Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s secretary of state, had created “uncertainty” by failing to respond to communications from the Trump campaign about his ballot eligibility. Mr. Trump is the dominant front-runner for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination. Plaintiffs in that case then sued in Michigan state court to have the court order Ms. Benson to disqualify Mr. Trump. Ms. Benson has noted that she is watching for the results of that case.

Former President Donald J. Trump still has a huge lead in Iowa, according to a poll released Monday, but Nikki Haley has surged to tie Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida for a distant second place. Mr. DeSantis and Ms. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and former United Nations ambassador, are tied at 16 percent. That is a decline of three percentage points for Mr. DeSantis and an increase of 10 points for Ms. Haley, driven in part by increasing support for Ms. Haley among independent voters. The poll was conducted by J. Ann Selzer and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Judge Wallace has laid out nine topics to be addressed at the trial, which is scheduled to last all week. These questions have been debated since the Jan. 6 attack, especially since Mr. Trump announced that he was running for president again, but there is little precedent to help answer them. The 14th Amendment was ratified shortly after the Civil War, and the disqualification clause was originally applied to people who had fought for the Confederacy. The courts have rarely had occasion to assess its modern application, and never in a case of this magnitude. But that view is far from universal among legal scholars, and several have told The New York Times over the past few months that the questions are complicated.

The stars of “Friends” say they are mourning the “unfathomable” death of Matthew Perry. “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew,” Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer said in a joint statement to People on Monday. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”It was the first public statement on Perry's death from Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc or Schwimmer. Others public mourning Perry on Monday included Salma Hayek, his co-star in the 1997 rom-com “Fools Rush In,” which Perry had said was probably his best film. Morgan Fairchild, who played mother to Perry's Chandler Bing on the show, and Maggie Wheeler, who played Chandler's sometime girlfriend Janice, gave similar sentiments.

Matthew Perry was mourned on social media by friends, co-stars and some very famous fans, including his childhood classmate, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his “Friends” mom Morgan Fairchild and even Adele. Trudeau, who attended elementary school with Perry while their parents worked together, wrote a tribute on X, formerly Twitter. “I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them,” Trudeau wrote. Perry once hosted the show, in 1997, which featured one sketch where he played Matt LeBlanc’s character Joey and Colin Quinn played Chandler. “All of us loved Matthew Perry, and I did especially.

Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers about the series finale of “Billions,” titled “Admirals Fund.”After seven twisty seasons, with more double and triple crosses than you can shake a stock certificate at, “Billions” successfully landed the plane (OK, private jet) with its series finale, in a satisfying finish that reassembled the key players and even gave them time to take individual bows. For a show with so much bite and venom, it was oddly sentimental in generally the best of ways. The final season found a way to raise the stakes above high finance, with billionaire Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) running for president, exhibiting enough problematic qualities and questionable beliefs to inspire those within in his inner circle to turn against him and try to thwart his bid. If it wasn’t quite the game of catch scene from “Field of Dreams,” for these purposes the point was much the same. The “Billions” finale is playing on Paramount+ and will premiere October 29 on Showtime.

The departure from the race came less than 90 days before the Iowa caucuses, on which Mr. Pence had staked his candidacy. But while Iowa is a more difficult early state in the Republican primary contests for Mr. Trump than some of the others, the former president remains dominant there. Mr. Pence is the highest-profile candidate to leave the race, and the first of those who had met the Republican National Committee’s criteria for the primary debates. Mr. Pence’s campaign recently reported more than $600,000 in debt. But Mr. Pence, a former governor of Indiana, struggled mightily to raise money, never gaining traction in the polls that his former running mate has dominated.

Mr. Cohen’s second day was bumpier. Under questioning from one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, Mr. Cohen appeared flustered and admitted to several past lies, including before a judge when he was sentenced to prison for federal crimes in 2018. The two-day spectacle offered a preview of how Mr. Cohen, who once idolized Mr. Trump but now loathes him, might perform on the bigger stage of the criminal trial. It also captured the trade-offs for prosecutors of calling a witness like Mr. Cohen, a felon who can nonetheless offer an insider’s account of Mr. Trump’s conduct. Mr. Cohen became so worried about the lack of assistance that his lawyer, E. Danya Perry, prepared him to object on his own behalf.

The super PAC supporting Donald J. Trump will begin airing an attack against Ron DeSantis in Iowa, a shift in strategy after months of focusing their messaging on their likely general election opponent. It will enter the rotation as part of an ad buy totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars by the group Make America Great Again Inc., which supports Mr. Trump. It aims to paint Mr. DeSantis, with less than three months before the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses, as insufficiently conservative, by accusing him of supporting statehood for Puerto Rico. It marks a change in approach by the super PAC, which abandoned negative ads about Mr. DeSantis at the start of the summer. The group shifted to focusing on the likely general election opponent, and attacking President Biden, beginning in August, a move that might appeal to some primary voters but which also sent the message that Team Trump saw Mr. DeSantis as a fading threat.

A 0.25 mg injection pen of Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug Wegovy is shown in this photo illustration in Oslo, Norway, September 1, 2023. "Supply of Wegovy is the most important thing for specialist healthcare investors covering Novo right now," said Barclays analyst Emily Field. Some analysts said a firm date would ease concerns that Novo's supply constraints could allow rival Eli Lilly (LLY.N) to get ahead, when it launches its Mounjaro weight-loss drug. Eli Lilly, the world's most valuable drug company ahead of Novo, has said it expects U.S. approval for the drug, currently licensed for diabetes, to be used for weight loss by the end of the year. Novo is spending billions to increase Wegovy output and hiring more contract manufacturers to fill the pens.

NEW YORK (AP) — The fallout from the actors strike, now past 100 days, has been widespread throughout the film industry. As the strike pushes into Hollywood’s awards season, it’s increasingly muting the reception for some of the best performances of the year. But near the center of each case are lawyers who pledged public fealty to Mr. Trump — until they very publicly did not. And because Mr. Trump has such a tenuous relationship with the truth, those lieutenants often spread a message that prosecutors and investigators consider to be outright lies. And while Mr. Trump is quick to blame his betrayers — Mr. Cohen is “proven to be a liar,” he said outside the courtroom this week — his predicament was born from his own lopsided approach to relationships. Mr. Trump has a history of disavowing people who were once close to him and find themselves in trouble. Their relationships, a one-way street flowing in Mr. Trump’s direction, appeared to work for a time.

CNN —Dame Maggie Smith, the British actress acclaimed for her appearances both on stage and in cinema, has taken on a new role — and this time it’s in the world of luxury fashion. Loewe has cast the 88-year-old, known for roles such as Professor McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” film franchise, in its spring/summer 2024 pre-collection campaign. The pointed hat and cape of Hogwarts are a distant memory as Smith sports three cosy and stylish looks for the campaign. As the Showtime financial thriller “Billions” prepares to air its final episode this weekend, it’s worth considering how far we’ve come. The show started as the story of the crusading U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and the hard-charging hedge funder Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis). Exclusive restaurants, elaborate schemes and a host of cameos by real-world power players provided the backdrop for their battle. In a video chat earlier this month they discussed the state of play and the fates of the major players in the series, without revealing who (if anyone) wins the final “Billions” battle. According to an otherwise cagey Koppelman, “The end of this show is really for ‘Billions’ fans.” These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Federal prosecutors have quietly withdrawn a subpoena seeking records from former President Donald J. Trump’s 2020 campaign as part of their investigation into whether Mr. Trump’s political and fund-raising operations committed any crimes as he sought to stay in power after he lost the election, according to two people familiar with the matter. The rescission of the subpoenas to Donald J. Trump for President Inc. and Save America was an indication that Mr. Smith’s office was slowing down or even closing its monthslong inquiry into whether Mr. Trump’s political operation broke any laws by citing baseless claims of election fraud to raise money. The withdrawal of the subpoena to Save America was first reported last week by The Washington Post. A spokesman for Mr. Trump did not respond to requests seeking comment. A spokesman for the special counsel’s office declined to comment.
