CNN —Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce has told his teammates he is retiring from the NFL, according to multiple reports. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo both reported the news Tuesday morning, following the Eagles’ 32-9 playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. CNN Sport has reached out to the Eagles and Kelce’s agent for comment. Kelce, 36, spent his entire 13-season NFL career with the Eagles and won Super Bowl LII in February 2018. Yeah, obviously, we’re not there at that position yet – ready to talk about that, but he’s special and I love him.

‘Peacock Game’: The NFL’s Digital Buttfumble
  + stars: | 2024-01-15 | by ( Jason Gay | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The Dallas Cowboys are toast, and that is always amusing, but I shall write about the Kansas City Chiefs, because they were in “The Peacock Game.” The Peacock Game! For irritated fans, it immediately enters the Hall of NFL Infamy, alongside The Heidi Game, The Tuck Rule, and my favorite football calamity, Le Buttfumble. Here was a marquee Wild-Card weekend playoff contest, walled off from the nonpaying public, all because the NFL sold the game to a mega media conglomerate, NBCUniversal, which wanted to use it to attract new subscribers for Peacock, its paid streaming service featuring French bike racing and 19 zillion reruns of Law & Order.

The Wild Card game, which aired on the streaming service Peacock, was the most streamed U.S. event ever, drawing 23 million viewers, according to Comcast NBCUniversal, Peacock’s owner. It also was the largest event ever for internet usage in the U.S., accounting for 30% of web traffic, making Saturday the single highest day of U.S. internet usage in history.

Read previewThe Saturday NFL playoff game where the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins wasn't the only win that night. The game also set a record for the most streamed US event, averaging 23 million views, according to Comcast. AdvertisementThe Peacock and NFL bet was planned last year after NBCUniversal paid the NFL $110 million to hold a streaming-only playoff game. The first-ever live-streamed playoff game hit 27.6 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. "We couldn't be prouder of our partnership with Peacock and are thrilled with the results of the first-ever exclusively live-streamed NFL playoff game," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The “Peacock Exclusive Wild Card” game garnered 23 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. NBC said in a release that the game sets records for the “most-streamed live event in US history” and was also responsible for the most internet usage ever in the US on a single date, consuming 30% of internet traffic during the Saturday night game. That number also includes viewership figures from the local NBC affiliates in Miami and Kansas City and on the NFL+ mobile app, where the game was also shown outside of Peacock. Notably, the ratings for the exclusively streamed game was up 6% over last year’s primetime AFC Wild Card Game that was shown on NBC’s broadcast network. It recorded an average of 27 million viewers overall, which NBC said at the time made it the most-watched Sunday show since the 2023 Super Bowl.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Saturday night's AFC wild-card playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs on Peacock set a record for the most-watched event on a streaming service. According to Nielsen, the Chiefs' 26-7 victory in frigid temperatures averaged 23 million viewers on Peacock, NFL+ and on NBC affiliates in Kansas City and Miami. Last year’s first-round playoff game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars averaged 20.61 million viewers. Judging by the audience, Saturday's game is unlikely to be the last playoff matchup shown on a streaming service. Under the NFL’s contract, each of its four broadcast partners — NBC, CBS, Fox and ESPN/ABC — gets at least one wild-card game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. With a game-time temperature of minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit, the game was the fourth-coldest in NFL history, and it was unclear whether the temperature made the shell of Mahomes' helmet more brittle than usual. You won't see this weekend's Kansas City Chiefs-Miami Dolphins NFL playoff game on broadcast TV. It's a big change — and a test for Comcast: How many people will actually subscribe to a streamer to watch the NFL? AdvertisementThat's because last year, NBCUniversal paid the NFL $110 million for the rights to a streaming-only playoff game. (One exception: In 2015, cable channel ESPN aired a single playoff game.) At a press call with reporters earlier this week, NFL distribution executive Hans Schroeder wouldn't commit to whether the league would do more streaming-only playoff games next year: "This is a deal for this year, but it's an NFL playoff game.

"It is absolutely ridiculous that my constituents, who already pay for NBC, have to pay even more to watch this game," Ryan wrote in a letter to top NFL and NBC officials. I'm demanding the NFL and NBC stop the BS and offer fans the service they already pay for, or we're coming for your antitrust exemption." "Fans already face exorbitant prices to watch every game during the regular season; they don't deserve to be squeezed even further by greedy corporations," Ryan added. The league added that all the remaining playoff games would be available over the air nationwide, as well as on other platforms. NBC Sports reportedly pays the league more than $2 billion a year for its slice of NFL games.
