I allowed myself a small window to mourn, and then decided to view the layoff as an opportunity instead of a loss. I had applied to hundreds of jobs but landed only two interviews and received zero job offers. In early December, I applied online for a seasonal position with Target completely on a whim — half expecting to be ghosted again. But the very next day, I got an offer to be a guest advocate for the holidays at $15 an hour. And it didn't take long for me to realize that my "little seasonal job," as I liked to call it, was one of the best things I could have done for myself.

The Apple Vision Pro transformed how I watch movies in my first week of using it. With the Vision Pro, the places you can watch a movie are endless as long as you have WiFi. Doing so while wearing the Vision Pro would require me to reposition my window to keep it in my line of sight. AdvertisementBut after some time, the coziness wore off, and the weight of the Vision Pro started to make laying down feel awkward. The Vision Pro can project a jumbotron-like big screen onto my ceiling, so of course I had to do just that.

So, what if AI avatars that act and talk like employees could be present in the (virtual) room on their behalf? Liang expects Otter's AI work persona will be able to answer 90% of the questions it's asked during meetings, he said. But the road to building trustworthy AI avatars is riddled with technical and social obstacles. "It needs to have the knowledge and emotional intelligence to participate in a productive way," Liang said about the AI. The report listed technology as a driver behind our isolation, fear of missing out, conflict, and reduced social interaction. Other drivers of loneliness included social policies, cultural norms, the political environment, and macroeconomic factors. In fact, most research demonstrates that loneliness increases with increased use of technology, especially social media sites." "The response is incredible," Kyle Rand, CEO and cofounder of Rendever, told BI. He added: "The trend to solve loneliness through more technology, when technology has not yet reduced the problem, seems to be going in the wrong direction."

And now, it's finally time to discuss the perennial and important work-related question: How should you dress? That usually means dressing professionally, the way most successful people in your organization and industry dress — those people whose jobs and reputations you eventually want. Also, "professional" clothes can be expensive and a pain to care for. "Dressing for success" just means looking professional and in keeping with your workplace culture — as opposed to how you might dress on the weekend or at home. Remember:AdvertisementAs with other aspects of professional conduct, dressing for success is not about you.

Why AI can’t replace air traffic controllers

In the air traffic control system, everything must meet the highest levels of safety, but not everything goes according to plan. I’m an aerospace engineer who led a National Academies study ordered by Congress about air traffic controller staffing. What air traffic controllers do? The Federal Aviation Administration’s fundamental guidance for the responsibility of air traffic controllers states: “The primary purpose of the air traffic control system is to prevent a collision involving aircraft.” Air traffic controllers are also charged with providing “a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic” and other services supporting safety, such as helping pilots avoid mountains and other hazardous terrain and hazardous weather, to the extent they can. Researchers are using machine learning to analyze and predict aspects of air traffic and air traffic control, including air traffic flow between cities and air traffic controller behavior.

When it comes to AI in hiring, there's a disconnect between how employers and job seekers view the technology. "Helping candidates understand where in the process their application will interact with AI tools is really useful." In Indeed's AI survey, 60% of job seekers expressed concern about bias in the data that trains employers' AI hiring systems. Avoid the resume black holeMany job seekers perceive AI tools as hyper-focused on keywords, ignoring a candidate's full story. Don't sacrifice the humanity of hiringA looming concern among job seekers is that using AI in hiring will replace the personal touch.

Biden’s aides know there is no topic more likely to draw their boss’ fury than a slight against his family. Only about 45 minutes before Hur’s report was released publicly, the White House was working to downplay the verbal slip-ups, saying it’s common for people to misspeak. “Many people, elected officials … they can misspeak sometimes,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, citing recent examples from House Speaker Mike Johnson and TV host Sean Hannity. The report was released anyway, with the objections of Biden’s lawyers included – but only toward the end of the nearly 400-page report. “I was in the middle of handling an international crisis,” Biden said Thursday about an hour after the report was released.

The difference between landing a job offer or a rejection can come down to how well you adjust to a fast-paced environment and interact with your colleagues. Communication is the top skill companies are hiring for right now, while adaptability is a soft skill that's "increasingly in demand" across a wide range of industries, according to new research from LinkedIn. Employers want to hire people who can quickly adapt to these ongoing changes, says LinkedIn vice president Aneesh Raman. "At its core, communication is essential for connecting, inspiring, building trust and getting work done effectively," she adds.

Think of "spatial computing" as an umbrella term that refers to merging the digital world with the physical world in a seamless way. Instead, Apple refers to the Vision Pro as a "spatial computer." If you're in the U.S. and have an extra $3,500 lying around, you can now get Apple's latest gadget, the Vision Pro — but don't call it a virtual reality headset. While both augmented reality and virtual reality fall under the spatial computing umbrella, the two terms refer to different user experiences. Apple is positioning the Vision Pro as a full-on computer that could work as an alternative to your desktop or laptop, instead of a device that's mainly used for entertainment, he adds.

I read through all 274 responses to a questionnaire I put out about how politics affects the dating lives of Americans under 30, and I took note of the fact that quite a few respondents used economic terminology when describing their romantic experiences. The term “scarcity,” in particular, came up more than once as a factor in dating experiences. If you live in a smaller or more politically mixed environment, you can’t afford to be so choosy without severely restricting your dating pool. In Brooklyn, for example, registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans about eight to one. So for daters in my own liberal bubble, it doesn’t matter nearly as much that in the country overall, men are more likely to be conservative — a New Yorker is unlikely to be dating someone who currently lives in Alabama or Wyoming.
