It is a question based on recent market behavior, corporate profit reports and prospective economic policy changes at home and abroad. It suggests that declining inflation and economic weakness may well be in our future. Recent U.S. economic data has been unexpectedly steady, with recent growth pegged at an annual rate of 2.8% in the second quarter. Unemployment data flashes a warning sign The unemployment rate remains low at 4.1% as of June, but it has risen from 3.7% back in January . Some economists argue that an increase of half a percentage point in the unemployment rate, off the lows, is a precursor to a recession.

Installing solar panels can be back-breaking work, so one of the largest renewable energy companies is using robots to do the heavy lifting. AES Corporation on Tuesday introduced "Maximo," an AI-powered robot that can lift solar panels and precisely place them into long rows. The robot will be used to construct the largest solar farm with battery storage in the US, which will help power Amazon's data centers. AES said Maximo can install solar panels twice as fast as humans and at half the cost. Families for some of the 346 people killed in two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday a U.S. judge should reject the planemaker's proposed plea deal with the Justice Department and the government should seek a much higher fine. Spokespeople for Boeing and the Justice Department did not immediately comment on the families' filings. The DOJ told Boeing earlier this month it could accept a settlement that branded the planemaker a felon or fight the charge in court. The Justice Department has a separate criminal probe ongoing into the Alaska Airlines jet that was missing four key bolts. The company's board -- including new CEO -- must meet with the victims' families within four months of sentencing.

Called the "Siren Craft System," it overhauls the workflow at some 10,000 of its coffeehouses in an effort to reduce inefficiency, speed up orders, and boost customer satisfaction. Every fast-food outlet, Starbucks cafés included, is a little factory. The new system instructs baristas to push cold drinks down in the queue in favor of hot ones. But the fact is, the cold drinks also take longer to make. The higher-grossing cold drinks take so long to make, in fact, that they're actually pretty low-margin.

CNN —A new promotional video by tech giant Apple has been met with heavy criticism in Thailand, with many social media users claiming it offers an unrealistic, outdated view of the country. The plot follows four characters – known as the underdogs – and their attempts to overcome workplace crises using Apple devices and software. Since the series’ debut in 2019, the characters have left their corporate jobs and founded their own company. It’s fine,” wrote Thai social media user Sakchawit Attasillekha on Facebook, pointing out there are “plenty of old hotels in Bangkok” and “old taxis decorated with Buddha amulets.”“However, we also have good things too,” he added. Sombat Boonngamanong, a prominent social activist, also weighed in on Facebook saying that he was surprised the video had caused such a stir.

"By the way," Vice President Kamala Harris said at an Atlanta rally on Tuesday, "don't you find some of their stuff to just be plain weird?" With Democrats eagerly resurfacing the Ohio senator's years-old comments about "childless cat ladies," Republicans are suddenly on the defensive over their party's nominee for vice president. In an attempted counterpunch, Vance himself posted a video of Vice President Kamala Harris stating her pronouns during a CNN town hall in 2019. I wish her stepchildren and Kamala Harris and her whole family the very best. But what turns off Democrats — and plenty of Republicans — is that he isn't celebrating those who are able to have families.

Cash has poured into money market funds since the Federal Reserve began its rate hiking cycle. Short-term debt has been a popular investment over the past few years, and money market funds are a top example. For perspective, there was roughly $4 trillion in total money market funds as of the fourth quarter of 2019, according to the St. Louis Fed . Money market funds hold very short-term debt, and many currently offer a yield above 5%. When it comes to investing in sectors such as financials and energy under Trump, Bianco believes that size matters. A Harris presidency would benefit the renewable energy industry, according to Amanda Rebello, head of Xtrackers ETF sales at DWS. That's primarily because a Harris presidency would result in more stringent fiscal policy than a Trump one. The national debt is also likely to rise faster under a Trump presidency compared to a Harris one. Visitors walk during a long-duration heat wave impacting much of California on July 9 in Death Valley National Park, California. Amid surging summer heat, the earth reached a new hottest day on record on July 22. That day, the global average temperature was almost 63 degrees Fahrenheit, and was surrounded by similar high temperature days. As a result, many Americans face a tough tradeoff between paying higher cooling costs or suffering in the heat to save money, research finds. Home cooling costs have risen in the past decade as higher temperatures require more electricity.

The market risks a harmful debt bubble, potentially spreading losses in the financial sector. Economist Dambisa Moyo warns of overvalued stocks driven by enthusiasm for artificial intelligence. AdvertisementThe stock market could be hosting one of the most harmful types of debt bubbles, with losses that risk spreading around the financial sector, according to one economist and investing veteran. But even more concerning is that the US could be seeing one of the most problematic types of bubbles, fueled by highly borrowed and "unproductive" assets, Moyo said. Losses from troubled companies also risk contaminating other areas of the market, Moyo added.

Some business leaders and wealthy donors are hopeful that Harris will adopt more centrist policies as she outlines her agenda, especially by dialing back Biden-era antitrust crackdowns. “CEOs are wildly excited about Harris,” Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, founder and president of the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute, told CNN in a phone interview. Sonnenfeld pointed to confidence that Harris will protect the rule of law and hopes for recalibrated trade, regulatory and tax policies. Meanwhile, Harris, somewhat of an unknown commodity on business policy, hasn’t said much about where she stands. Another key sticking point is energy, where Trump has tried to blame the Biden-Harris administration for periods of high gas prices.

As more commuters settle into flexible working arrangements, the traditional American 9-to-5 has shifted to 10-to-4, according to the 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard released in June by INRIX Inc., a traffic-data analysis firm. Its analysis shows fewer early morning trips and a higher volume of midday trips compared to pre-pandemic traffic patterns. Ridership sank during the pandemic, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis data shows, and never fully recovered. The result is a surge in traffic congestion throughout the peak midday and evening hours, according to Pishue. "Pre-Covid, the morning rush hour would be a peak and then the evening peak would be much larger," he said, describing two apexes with a valley in between.
