Gene Sperling, the White House liaison for the strike talks, was in daily contact with executives at the UAW and the three automakers. By that point, there was enough trust that the misunderstanding did little from the White House perspective to hurt the relationship. The UAW president declined to endorse the president who had engaged in the historic outreach. So as I said we’ll do that when it’s time.”Still, the White House saw itself as building trust with the UAW as the talks progressed. As soon as a tentative agreement was in place, Barra told the gathered negotiators that she needed to text the White House.

A jury found Sam Bankman-Fried guilty in his fraud trial over the collapse of FTX. One by one, his friends flipped to work with the prosecution and threw Bankman-Fried under a much bigger bus. That's how a jury found him guilty of seven counts in his federal fraud trial in downtown Manhattan on Thursday evening. New York CNN —Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty Thursday following a monthlong trial that was almost as wild as the rapid rise and fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX itself. He was found guilty of stealing billions of dollars from accounts belonging to customers of FTX. New York CNN —Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty on Thursday for his role in the collapse of crypto exchange FTX. Bankman-Fried looked sunken as the verdict was read out. Bankman-Fried was found guilty of stealing billions of dollars from accounts belonging to customers of his once-high-flying crypto exchange FTX. During his trial, Bankman-Fried said he learned in 2020 that FTX customer funds were held by Alameda but he did not take action to safeguard them. But, unlike bank customers, FTX depositors had no federal insurance fund to compensate them when the cash dried up.

Stellantis declined to comment, saying it would wait for workers to vote first before discussing the deal. Stellantis will also offer $50,000 buyouts in 2024 and 2026 to UAW production workers, allowing it to cut costs by hiring fresh workers who start at lower wages. The UAW said the Stellantis investment commitments total about $19 billion, but that includes some previously announced plans. Stellantis has slightly longer than rival Ford to convert current temporary workers to permanent employees. That is on top of the $5,000 bonus hourly workers will get on ratification along with an 11% immediate pay hike.

In fact, as other long-term trends take hold, many of these working-class roles are poised for a job explosion. While manufacturing jobs as a whole are expected to stay flat, spending in this industry has boomed to $200 billion each year, tripling in the past five years. "What characterizes the physical labor jobs that are safe for the next five or 10 years are things that are in an unpredictable physical environment," Kweilin Ellingrud, a McKinsey Global Institute director, told me. Instead of replacing these jobs, AI will likely benefit specific roles by making it easier to do the most routine parts of the job. He added: "There are these jobs that are in a middle ground where the physical work may remain but the supervision might be more exposed."

The solitude of remote work seemed to particularly hit Gen Z workers — who began their careers as workplaces went from in-person to virtual — hard. [1/2] U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland gives a brief statement at the Justice Department in Washington, U.S., August 11, 2023. That puts the Biden administration's second year of corporate enforcement on par with the second year of the Trump administration's - the fifth-lowest corporate prosecutions on record. The new safe harbor program also "directly undermines" the Biden Administration's anti-monopoly efforts, they said. The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission have mounted an unprecedented number of legal challenges to mergers since Biden took office. Some history you should know: Baby boomers like me grew up in a nation that was far less polarized economically than the one we live in today. For example, chief executives of major corporations were paid “only” 15 times as much as their average workers, compared with more than 200 times as much as their average workers now. But income gaps remained narrow for decades after these controls were lifted; overall income inequality didn’t really take off again until around 1980. Unions are a force for greater wage equality; they also help enforce the “outrage constraint” that used to limit executive compensation. Conversely, the decline of unions, which now represent less than 7 percent of private-sector workers, must have played a role in the coming of the Second Gilded Age we live in now.

On a sparkling October morning, with peak fall foliage blazing red and yellow, the residents of Lewiston emerged from two long days of lockdown on Saturday into a city forever changed. Sidewalks came to life. And the families of 18 people killed by a mass shooter here on Wednesday night tried to move on in a haze of grief, their losses piling an almost unbearable weight on a place that prides itself on its resilience. Lewiston, Maine — a city of 36,000 that feels more like a small town — sits away from the picturesque harbors and privileged enclaves of the coastline, in the sprawling inland interior of this vast rural state. With a history bookended by two waves of immigration, a century apart, and hollowed out by the lost textile mills that once defined its economy, it is frequently described by outsiders with well-worn, vaguely disparaging adjectives.

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has raised many concerns, prominent among these AI job displacement and mass layoffs throughout the economy. No round of layoffs of knowledge workers goes by without a mention of the threat of AI. In May of this year alone, the U.S. economy lost 4,000 jobs as a result of AI, according to data from employment outsourcing firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. According to Factset, mentions of generative AI on corporate earnings calls increased from five in December 2022 to 390 in June 2023. The more recent milestone, according to Rand: by 2020, "nearly all occupations are exposed to AI technology patent."
