Opinion | Silicon Valley’s MAGA Moment
  + stars: | 2024-09-25 | by ( Chris Hughes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I co-founded Facebook in college 20 years ago, but I left California and start-up culture behind long ago for public policy and economics. As we sat over scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and whole-wheat toast, I was struck by how many of the wealthiest and most powerful figures in Silicon Valley — including some I knew — were now loudly backing Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump claims that Mark Zuckerberg called him to say that he wouldn’t support a Democrat in November, although Mr. Zuckerberg’s spokesperson denied the claim. It would be easy to write off tech’s rightward drift as nothing more than the rich acting in their economic self-interest, but Silicon Valley has always been driven by profit, and it hasn’t tilted Republican since the 1980s. Even now, it remains largely Democratic, even though even some of Kamala Harris’s strongest Valley supporters worry about how she might approach tech policy.

“If you come to my shows, if you read my full interviews, if you literally know anything about me and for what I stand for. “So yeah – I’m voting for f**king Kamala, but I’m not settling for what has been offered, because that’s questionable.”CNN has reached out to the Harris campaign. A representative for Roan declined to comment further when contacted by CNN. The saga marks the latest example of the tightrope celebrities in the age of TikTok and social media have had to tread in voicing their support – or silence – on politics. After Swift endorsed Harris, the superstar faced backlash from Trump, who told Fox News that he “was not a Taylor Swift fan” and said that she will “probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”

Commerzbank announced Tuesday it has picked 10-year veteran, and current Chief Financial Officer Bettina Orlopp to helm the bank as chief executive as it seeks to fend off a potential hostile takeover from Italian bank UniCredit. The bank has been on the defensive as UniCredit looks to become its largest shareholder, signaling the potential for a full takeover. Earlier this month, the Milan-based bank started building its shareholding with a 9% stake in Commerzbank. Senior officials at Commerzbank and the German government, which was the company's largest shareholder until UniCredit stepped in, have both said they oppose a hostile takeover.

AdvertisementThe FAA said in a statement that the flight responded to an onboard alert about another aircraft in the vicinity. The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) helps prevent midair collisions by monitoring the surrounding airspace and alerting pilots about nearby aircraft. The system sounds an alarm in the cockpit, and the pilots notify the air traffic controller that they are responding to a TCAS alarm, Kevin Karpé, a former air traffic controller and air traffic manager, previously told Business Insider. However, last year, concerns rose about a spike in the number of collision close calls taking place in the US.

Google filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission Wednesday accusing Microsoft of using unfair licensing contracts to stifle competition in the multibillion-dollar cloud computing industry. At the heart of Google's complaint is the allegation that Microsoft uses unfair licensing terms to "lock in" clients and exert control over the cloud market. Referring to the CISPE settlement, Microsoft said in a statement Wednesday that it expects the European Commission to dismiss Google's complaint. "Microsoft settled amicably similar concerns raised by European cloud providers, even after Google hoped they would keep litigating," a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC via email. "Having failed to persuade European companies, we expect Google similarly will fail to persuade the European Commission."

The stopgap spending bill, which will fund the government until December 20, will next be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. Johnson had said that he believes Trump understands that House Republicans don’t have the votes to pass the SAVE Act.
