Haley, 51, in third place nationally, has grown stronger as she seeks to dislodge DeSantis, 45, from his distant second place in the Republican race after Trump. With the first Republican state nominating contest, in Iowa, little more than two months away, Haley, a former South Carolina governor who also served as Trump's U.N. ambassador, and Florida Governor DeSantis are running out of time. DESANTIS AT HOME IN FLORIDAThe Florida debate setting offers DeSantis a home advantage over others on stage. Haley will be coming off two strong debate performances and has been the only Republican besides Trump to show recent momentum in early nominating states such as Iowa and New Hampshire.

She’d need to continue dominating debates; she’d need to not fade or completely lose it when Mr. Trump turns a real attack on her; and more than anything she’d need a substantive critique, even if gently delivered, of Mr. Trump to feel true and land with people. A win in Iowa or New Hampshire for Ms. Haley would reset the entire primary. That response likely derived from the ridiculous period after Jan. 6, when Ms. Haley criticized Mr. Trump harshly, then seemed to dial it back. Part of it is the smooth, pain-free way Ms. Haley entered and extricated herself from the Trump administration, after criticizing him in 2016 and endorsing Marco Rubio. On foreign policy, Haley offered an unapologetic and determined vision, saying America needs to stand by its ally Israel and support Ukraine. On Social Security, both Haley and Christie said the retirement age needed to be raised for younger workers, though neither would state a specific age. At the first two debates, Mr. DeSantis played the front-runner, attacking his opponents only when he was hit first. This has not been an easy stretch for Mr. DeSantis, in no small part because of the attacks from Mr. Trump on everything from his foreign policy credentials to his height.
