AdvertisementMichael Sistak, who served as Sen. Mitt Romney's political director in Michigan in 2012, described a presidential campaign as a "long slog through the mud." AdvertisementIn the 1960s, primaries became a fixture of presidential elections and added months to the campaign. The primary system emerged as a decisive force after World War II and solidified its place in the American presidential election process in 1968. "It's a slog from January all the way to the convention," she said about presidential election years.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday said there will not be another debate against his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. "Polls clearly show that I won the Debate against Comrade Kamala Harris, the Democrats' Radical Left Candidate, on Tuesday night, and she immediately called for a Second Debate," Trump wrote. The showdown in Philadelphia was Trump's second presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle. Moments after the debate ended, Harris campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon called for a second debate in October. "Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate.

New York CNN —The Republican nominee for president went on live TV and presented an unhinged, debunked Facebook rumor as fact. Scrolling on Facebook or X, it’s hard not to see some of that chaos creeping into the mainstream. Just a few weeks ago, the former president posted an AI-generated image on his Truth Social platform that suggested Taylor Swift had endorsed him. Of course, it was a fake image — the same kind of obvious AI slop that has overrun Facebook and X. Either Trump didn’t know the image was fake, or he didn’t mind lying to his followers and perpetuating the fake endorsement.

Vance, the Ohio senator and running mate to former President Donald Trump, said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" that the Democratic presidential nominee "has flooded the country with 25 million illegal aliens." During an Aug. 28 speech in Wisconsin, Vance claimed Harris "let in 25 million illegal aliens." He specified in the same speech that those alleged 25 million people are currently "here in this country illegally." The Department of Homeland Security's Office of Homeland Security Statistics in April estimated that 11 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the U.S. as of Jan. 1, 2022. That total marked a decline from an estimated 11.6 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2010, but an increase from 10.5 million in January 2020, according to the office.

All three undecided voters assembled for a similar exercise in the Philadelphia suburbs remained on the fence, with Harris getting a look from two and former President Donald Trump from one. Undecided voters only account for a few percentage points of the electorate right now, according to public polls, with a closely divided country getting behind Trump and Harris. “Finally, we have someone who’s a woman who gets that it’s about us.”But Lewis said Harris didn’t fully seal the deal with her last night. Angel Sobolewski doesn’t take political advice from pop stars — not even her favorite, Taylor Swift. Some right-leaning Swift fans had expected those statements. On Wednesday, in an interview with “Fox & Friends,” Trump responded to Swift’s endorsement, saying, “I was not a Taylor Swift fan. Trump’s campaign said before the debate that he had already accepted debate invitations from Fox News and NBC News, and that Harris had not. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said he would participate in debates with NBC News or Fox News. Fresh off the perceived win, pushing Harris into several debates seemed like a strategic goal for Trump, and Harris rebuffed a request for one on Fox News in early September. Harris has not accepted a second debate with Trump, but her campaign appeared more open on Wednesday. “But the most important indication here is that Harris failed to explain why she hasn’t already done the things she claims she cares about.

After eight years of threatening to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, former President Donald Trump still doesn’t have a comprehensive plan to replace it. People in the U.S. pay roughly twice as much for health care than any other nation on earth. But is it feasible to create a new health care law that reduces the escalating costs? “Right now, Obamacare is the status quo in health care,” said Larry Levitt, executive vice president of health policy at KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues. Harris has committed to extending the subsidies; Trump has remained silent.

“Let’s have a good debate,” Harris said. The debate amounted to a missed opportunity for many Trump allies, who hoped that a solid performance would turn the page on Harris' "honeymoon" period. “She failed to meet the moment, with President Trump effectively reflecting the economic anxieties off Americans.”“Kamala’s joy doesn’t pay the grocery bills,” he added. “It is important that transgender individuals who rely on the state for care receive the treatment they need, which includes access to treatment associated with gender transition,” Harris wrote. In an early morning call-in to "Fox and Friends," Trump once again defended his debate performance and predicted Swift would regret her endorsement.

The first ballots of the 2024 general election are heading to voters, as Alabama officials started mailing them out Wednesday. Alabama requires that voters have a reason to vote by mail, such as being absent from the county or working during Election Day. In 2022, just over 45,000 voters cast absentee ballots, accounting for roughly 3% of all the state's ballots. Officials in Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Mississippi, Oregon, and Vermont will begin sending mail ballots later this month. And Virginia voters will be the first to cast in-person ballots in significant numbers, with early in-person voting kicking off on Sept. 20.

The share price of Trump Media plunged more than 17% on Wednesday morning, a day after majority shareholder Donald Trump gave a widely panned presidential debate performance against Vice President Kamala Harris. Investing in Trump Media stock is often seen as a way to bet on the political fortunes of Trump, the former president and current Republican nominee. Trump Media has said its business hinges at least partly on Trump’s popularity, and analysts say the company’s value will rise or fall based on his electoral prospects. Harris’ team, projecting confidence, challenged Trump to another debate right after the first one ended. Trump Media had surged as much as 10% during trading Tuesday, possibly indicating optimism about how Trump would fare in the debate.

Circuit Court of Appeals said plaintiff Corey McNellis could proceed with a bias lawsuit against the Douglas County School District because school administrators allegedly cited his “religious comments” about the play as the basis for his 2020 firing. Lawyers for McNellis and the school district did not immediately respond to requests for comment. During the email exchange with the theater director, McNellis wrote: “As a Christian I would love to collaborate with your project. And while Trump tried to tie Harris to President Joe Biden, he learned that she is a much tougher rival. While Trump tried to re-create the conditions of June’s fateful debate stage matchup, Harris reminded him, “You’re not running against Joe Biden. Harris tried to get under Trump’s skin, baiting him into a defensive posture that prevented him from attacking her weaknesses. And when Trump scolded Harris’ attempt to interrupt him, some allies lamented that he lost control at a key moment. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Opening statements were expected Wednesday in the federal trial of three former Memphis police officers charged with federal civil rights violations in the January 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols. Police video released that month showed the five officers, who also are Black, beating Nichols as he yelled for his mother about a block from his home. The officers said Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving, but Memphis’ police chief has said there is no evidence to substantiate that claim. The three officers now facing trial, along with Martin and Mills, were fired for violating Memphis Police Department policies. Welcome to a post-debate edition of the From the Politics Desk newsletter, breaking down all the action from tonight's showdown between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris, who took the Democratic nomination when President Joe Biden stepped aside following a catastrophic debate performance in June, delivered aggressive attacks and coherent rebuttals. He declined to answer questions about committing to a second debate, which Harris’ campaign challenged him to do in a statement earlier in the night. “I made that very clear in 2020, I will not ban fracking,” Harris said. PHILADELPHIA — Former President Donald Trump found out Tuesday night that he's got a much tougher rival on his hands now. Harris, eager to portray herself as different from both Trump and Biden, reminded him that Biden won't be on the ballot. Trump said Harris has had 3½ years to make the changes she promises to make and argued the Biden-Harris administration squandered progress Trump gave them. Trump and Harris also clashed over the 2020 election, with Trump again falsely claiming that he won. Throughout the debate, Harris needled Trump in ways that undermined his self-image as a popular, strong leader whom American’s adversaries fear.
