Some U.S. and Western officials increasingly believe that neither side can achieve all of their goals in the Ukraine war and are eyeing the expected winter slowdown in fighting as an opportunity for diplomacy to begin between Russia and Ukraine, say officials familiar with the matter. “In the winter everything slows down,” said a Western official with direct knowledge of military operations. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan made a surprise visit to Kyiv last week, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and top Ukrainian officials. Kherson is the last major front line that could shift before winter, officials said, after which neither side is likely to make large advances. If Ukraine wins in Kherson it could put the Zelenskyy government in a better position to negotiate, U.S. and Western officials said.

BIG PICTUREThe Fed is operating on data that’s offered a murky view of the economy’s health in recent months. On one hand, the housing market is cooling off markedly, but higher borrowing costs so far haven’t made a dent in inflation. That may reassure the Fed that there’s room to keep rate hikes going without triggering a recession. There is a glut of avocados in America and that’s triggered a steep drop in wholesale prices. Don’t yell at me, I don’t make the rules…Anyway, starting Thursday, it’s festive cup season, which Starbucks fans seem excited for.

As for Bündchen, she said that the divorce was amicable and that her focus remained on their children last week when announcing the split.

While these disruptions will impact iPhone production in the near term, analysts say it may not dent Apple’s iPhone shipments in the key holiday season.

“You’re running for governor,” Crist said, looking at DeSantis as the governor looked forward. “It’s not a tough question,” Crist said, filling the dead air. When Crist blamed DeSantis for rising utility bills and the skyrocketing cost of hurricane insurance, DeSantis faulted Crist for supporting Biden’s policies amid rising inflation. Time and again Monday night, Crist returned to the issue of DeSantis’ looming decision about whether he would run for president in 2024. It wasn’t the only question DeSantis wouldn’t answer.
House Democrats have unified as they fight to retain their fragile majority in next month’s midterms. But given Biden’s unpopularity and the GOP lead on the generic congressional ballot (which asks only which party people would support), the more likely scenario is a bad election night for House Democrats. If Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn head for the exits, the leadership matchups become pretty clear. Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., conducts a news conference in the Capitol Visitor Center on Sept. 20. The Massachusetts Democrat has significant support from fellow female members and has stayed close to the Black, Hispanic and Asian caucuses — big voting blocs in the diverse 220-member Democratic Caucus.
She is putting a new spin on the family business by attempting to tackle children’s nutrition, global food waste and the climate crisis with Climate Candy. You can get into the doorsteps, into the household, and get people talking about climate in just a very fun way.”FAVES Climate Candy. Courtesy Amy Keller/PurePlusAbout a third of all food is wasted globally, according to Project Drawdown, and that food waste accounts for roughly 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Keller said Climate Candy offers a solution to the food waste problem because of the ingredients her company chooses. And I think it’s just something that could be nostalgic for that next generation.”Correction:An earlier version of this story misstated the ingredients in FAVES candy.
CNN —When author Jeff Kinney started writing the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series more than 15 years ago, he set out to create a comic that would resonate with adults and live in the humor section of book stores. “I’m really glad that I didn’t know that I was writing for kids because I think that oftentimes when an adult writes a kid’s book, they start with the lesson in mind. And so the priority of the book becomes the lesson,” Kinney recalled in a recent interview with CNN. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” has sold more than 275 million copies, according to its publisher, with book number 17 in the series, “Diper Överlöde,” releasing Oct. 25. Kinney's next "Wimpy Kid" book, "Diper Överlöde," releases on Oct. 25.
CNN —American teenager Ilia Malinin landed the second ever quadruple axel in competition on Saturday without so much as a wobble. Malinin had become the first person ever to complete a quadruple axel in competition last month during the US International Figure Skating Classic, a lower-level event. But still, he was unsure whether to incorporate figure skating’s most difficult move into his free skate routine at Skate America. Meanwhile, reigning Olympic champion Nathan Chen has successfully landed every other type of quadruple jump except for the axel. And so, when Malinin – the junior world champion – landed a jump that had eluded so many before him, it marked a remarkable moment in figure skating history.
After a practice in mid-September, the Los Angeles Clippers released a photo reel on the theme of training-camp togetherness: dunks, laughs, camera-mugging, a chest bump. But one shot of a solitary player made everyone’s eyes widen. Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers’ expensive and often-unavailable superstar, had returned to the floor following a season missed due to ACL surgery, and in the picture he ran down-and-backs on legs that looked not just healed, but upgraded: quadriceps as round as basketballs, calves that jutted out at pronounced and unignorable angles.
CNN —Novavax’s Covid-19 vaccine is now available in the United States for use as a first booster dose for people 18 and older. The company said its booster is for adults for whom a Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna updated booster vaccine is not accessible or clinically appropriate, and for adults who elect to receive the Novavax vaccine because they would otherwise not get a booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. “The U.S. now has access to the Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted, the first protein-based option, as a booster,” Novavax President and CEO Stanley Erck said in a news release Wednesday. Novavax executives have long suggested that their Covid-19 vaccine could be used as a booster dose, even for people who got another vaccine type as their primary series. The most common side effects reported with the Novavax booster were pain or tenderness at the injection site, fatigue, muscle pain and headache.
A mural painted by a high school student came under fire when parents alleged it was promoting LGBTQ imagery and witchcraft. Earlier this year, a Grant, Michigan, high school sophomore won a contest “to brighten up” the middle school health center, according to a statement from Grant Public Schools (GPS). GPS says the student received approval to paint images of “smiling children” and as well as the message “Stay Healthy.”In the painting, there are three children. Courtesy Chandler MorrisTracey Hargreaves, who has two children in the Grant Public School system, came to the defense of the student artist. It’s not contagious.”The student artist left the meeting in tears, according to Hargreaves.
So even for Grammy, Emmy, Tony and Pulitzer winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, his first songbook, containing 27 songs from “Hamilton,” “Encanto,” “In the Heights” and more, was a big deal. At the event, his nephew Alejandro performed “Dos Oruguitas” (from “Encanto”) on the piano, and was joined by his own teacher for “You’ll Be Back” (from “Hamilton”). You grew up with musical theater and piano lessons — how does it feel to have your own songbook? And it really was a teacher who brought me out of just writing songs about girls in the back of the classroom. That’s a really fun thing about the whole process: When you’re there early enough, your songs can really be a part of a give-and-take.
President Joe Biden will pledge Tuesday to push for an abortion rights bill if Democrats retain control of Congress in the midterm elections, a Democratic official told NBC News. President Joe Biden speaks during an event at the East Portland Community Center in Portland, Ore. on Oct. 15, 2022. The president, who has largely focused on economic issues at recent public events, is turning his attention to abortion rights three weeks before the midterm elections, which could see Republicans retake control of Congress. Democrats across the country have campaigned heavily on abortion rights, vowing to reverse restrictions pushed by Republicans and expand access to reproductive health services. Any bills to codify abortion rights or to institute bans would be difficult to pass in a closely divided Senate, where 60 votes are needed to overcome filibusters.
“It’s a lie,” Walker, an anti-abortion Republican and former football star, told NBC News in an interview airing Monday on "TODAY." Just to show me things like that does nothing for me.”In Sunday’s interview, Walker acknowledged the $700 check was his but again said he had no knowledge of what the money might have been for. The woman told NBC News that this was the only payment Walker ever sent her prior to having their child. Walker, during a debate with Warnock on Friday, said he supported a Georgia abortion ban that provides exceptions for rape, incest and when the mother’s life is at risk. “That is a legit badge,” Walker said.
That includes hits like “Get Out,” “The Black Phone,” “The Purge,” “Paranormal Activity,” and the rebooted “Halloween” trilogy. “Halloween Ends,” the trilogy’s final film, hits theaters and streaming this weekend. Scary low budgets, scary good results"Get Out" was one of Blumhouse's biggest commercial and critical hits. For Jason Blum, the company’s CEO and founder, making movies on low budgets is more than just about saving money. “We’re really known for low budgets because low budgets are profitable,” he told CNN Business.
