Democracy struggles to function without a basic level of trust. We decided to conduct a focus group with 11 Democrats, Republicans and independents to explore how much they trusted — or didn’t trust — their fellow Americans and what was making them confident or skeptical. If you can’t trust what a person looks like or is, how can you have trust in anything?” said Melissa, 38. As for building trust, both Democrats and Republicans talked mostly about values — showing more respect to other people, communicating better, listening better — and about spending less time isolating in social media. “Building trust — how do you build trust when you're not talking?”

Abortion rights activists have said that there were at least five cases of pregnant women dying whose families came out to the media, blaming the restrictions on abortion for their deaths. Last month, Dorota died of septic shock in a hospital after her water broke in the 20th week of pregnancy. Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party leader said that by law women could have abortions if there was any threat to their life or health. "I hope the law will change and I will not be afraid to get pregnant in Poland," said Joanna Jędrasiak, 36, an economist. OTTAWA, June 14 (Reuters) - Canada will freeze the planned deportation of dozens of students who entered the country using fraudulent university letters of acceptance, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said on Wednesday. Fraser spoke after the Canadian Broadcasting Corp reported in March that several students from India had been served deportation papers for using forged documents to enter Canada in an alleged immigration scheme. Official data show there were more than 800,000 foreign students with active visas in Canada in 2022. Canada is a popular destination for international students since it is relatively easy to obtain a work permit. The Migrant Workers Alliance for Change has been supporting the students, saying they have spent years in Canada.

Instagram posts — which often showcase trips to Antarctica — may have given expedition cruising more publicity, but this form of cruising isn't new. Today, there is stiff competition among expedition cruise lines to launch more technologically advanced vessels and to secure onboard talent. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat, signed the historic measure into law on Monday in a Chicago library. The law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2024, the governor's office said in a statement. "Here in Illinois, we don't hide from the truth, we embrace it," Pritzker said. Under the new law, Illinois public libraries can only access state grants if they adopt the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, which stipulates that "materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval." Other states may choose to embrace prejudice and divisive ideologies, but our state is going in a better direction," said Democratic State Representative Anne Stava-Murray, who represents Downers Grove, in support of the Illinois measure.

WASHINGTON, June 13 (Reuters) - The United States will extend deportation relief and work permits through 2025 for more than 300,000 immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Nepal but will not expand the program to cover additional people, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Tuesday. Biden's Democratic administration is rescinding Trump's earlier decisions as part of the process of extending the relief for immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Nepal. The latest decision by the Biden administration will allow TPS renewals for 239,000 Salvadorans who have resided in the U.S. since 2001. WASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) - Neither President Joe Biden's Democrats nor Republicans in Congress emerged as a clear winner in the battle to raise the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. Another 20% said they thought Democrats emerged with the better side of the deal, while 11% said Republicans had done better, according to the four-day poll which concluded on Monday. Biden and McCarthy reached a deal last week to suspend the debt ceiling weeks of negotiations between Biden's White House and Republicans who control the House of Representatives. Politicians on both sides have presented the deal as a victory, with Republicans touting a reduction in non-military spending. The deal would cut spending by $1.3 trillion, less than the $4.8 trillion Republicans had sought.

Companies Alphabet Inc FollowWASHINGTON, June 5 (Reuters) - Texas won the latest round in its antitrust lawsuit against Alphabet's Google on Monday as a U.S. judicial panel ordered the case returned to federal court in Texas. At Google's request the lawsuit had been moved in August 2021 to a federal court in New York, where other advertising technology cases were being heard. Texas had asked for the lawsuit to be moved back after the U.S. Congress passed the Venue Act in 2022 that grants state attorneys general the right to choose where an antitrust lawsuit will be litigated. The Texas lawsuit accuses Google of violating the law by dominating the process that advertisers use to put ads online. And states led by Utah filed a lawsuit in 2021 saying the company broke antitrust law in handling its play store.

Most big bank stocks were trading lower in afternoon trading with the S&P 500 banking index (.SPXBK) down nearly 1% on Monday. U.S. regulators, led by the Federal Reserve, are also expected to propose this month increasing average bank capital requirements by as much as 20% a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. Regional bank stocks also logged broad declines on Monday, with the KBW Regional Banking Index (.KRX) shedding 2%. The impending international capital rules come amid a broader Fed review of lenders' capital requirements. "It's not shocking that you should expect to see some capital requirements being increased and a little more oversight is expected given what has happened with regional banks," Janasiewicz said.

Ardern was named "Dame Grand Companion," the second highest honour in New Zealand, on King Charles' birthday holiday celebrated by the country on June 5, and she made the coronation honours list for this year. The awardee is usually chosen in New Zealand by the prime minister and then approved by the British monarch, the head of state. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Ardern was recognised for her service during some of the greatest challenges New Zealand had faced in modern times. Ardern, who became the prime minister in 2017, resigned in January in a shock announcement saying she had "no more in the tank" to lead New Zealand. El Salvador partnership to build $1 billion bitcoin mining farm

SAN SALVADOR, June 5 (Reuters) - A public-private partnership in El Salvador will pump $1 billion into creating one of the world's largest bitcoin mining farms, the group called Volcano Energy announced on Monday. Volcano Energy said the funds would go toward an estimated 241 MW power generation park using solar and wind energy in the northwestern municipality of Metapan, which will eventually power the bitcoin mining farm. Bitcoin mining uses high-power computers hooked up to a global network, sucking up massive amounts of electricity in the process. The El Salvador government will have "a preferred participation equivalent to 23% of the revenues" in the project, Volcano Energy said, with private investors holding 27%. The debt ceiling deal keeps fiscal 2024 spending flat at this year's levels, allowing a 1% increase for fiscal 2025. "Speaker McCarthy's position is absolutely safe," U.S. Representative Garret Graves, a Louisiana Republican who helped negotiate the debt ceiling deal, told CBS' "Face the Nation". DEAL PASSES IN DIVIDED CONGRESSBuck said that McCarthy promised Republicans that he would cut spending levels to fiscal 2022 levels, not the higher 2023 levels agreed in the deal, making the deal a loss the party. The voting comes a year before Mexico's next presidential election, with polls indicating MORENA will be hard to beat. Del Moral has said the PRI learned from its mistakes and that her coalition would be a broader alternative to MORENA. As she cast her ballot, del Moral told reporters the vote was historic because for the first time a woman would be elected to govern the state. ABUJA, June 2 (Reuters) - Nigeria's main labour union said on Friday it plans to go on strike from Wednesday to protest against a tripling of fuel prices in what would be the first big test for new President Bola Tinubu after he scrapped a costly fuel subsidy. The price increase has led to a sharp rise in transport fares and Estonian ride-hailing and food delivery startup Bolt said it had hiked its prices in Nigeria, citing increased operating costs due to higher fuel prices. Nigeria's fuel subsidy cost the government billions of dollars annually but was popular as it helped keep prices low in Africa's biggest oil producer, which is still grappling with high poverty rates among residents. But Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president Joe Ajaero, after an emergency meeting of the union's executive council in Abuja, said the state oil company NNPC should reverse the price hike. On Friday, the president said Nigeria needs to review its minimum wage of 30,000 naira ($65).

Brazil posts record trade surplus in May on surging exports
  + stars: | 2023-06-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BRASILIA, June 1 (Reuters) - Brazil posted a $11.4 billion trade surplus in May, marking a record for any given month since the data series began in 1989, official data showed on Thursday. The figure also came above the $9 billion surplus expected in a Reuters poll with economists, backed by a surge in the volume of exports that more than offset price drops. Herlon Brandao, the director of Foreign Trade Intelligence and Statistics at the ministry, attributed the significant boost in Brazilian exports to the country's record-breaking agricultural harvest, with robust soybean shipments. From January to May, the positive balance of trade soared by 39.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching $35.3 billion. Following the ministry's initial projection for a $84 billion trade surplus this year, Brandao said that the figure is expected to be changed in the upcoming review in July, considering more favorable export prospects.
