CNN —A New Mexico judge on Monday denied “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed’s request for new trial and upheld her involuntary manslaughter conviction for the 2021 death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez Reed, who as armorer was in charge of firearms on the movie set, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March. Her defense attorney argued she was scapegoated for the safety failures of film set management and other crew members. Baldwin was also charged with involuntary manslaughter and had pleaded not guilty. Assistant film director David Halls took a plea deal in 2023 for his role in the shooting.

The government’s draft budget released Monday proposes spending just under 13.5 trillion rubles (over $145 billion) on national defense. The Ukraine war is Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II and has drained the resources of both sides, with Ukraine getting billions of dollars in help from its Western allies. Russian President Vladimir Putin is also looking at how to sustain his war effort as military spending has placed a huge strain on the Russian economy. Ukraine, too, has developed a new generation of drones for the battlefield and for long-range strikes deep inside Russia. More than 100 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russia on Sunday, Russian officials said.

For San Marino, these are some of the greatest results in the nation’s history. San Marino, a tiny microstate within Italy, is home to 33,600. Between 2006 and 2023, San Marino held the unwanted record of suffering the biggest defeat in European Championship qualifying history – a 13-0 drubbing by Germany. Bernd Schneider makes it 13-0, scoring a penalty past San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini. One goal early in the second half from 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli – who had not yet been born when San Marino last won – was enough.

Ukraine said it carried out a drone attack on a Russian ammunition depot over the weekend. Kyiv said Iranian missiles had arrived at the site shortly before the attack. AdvertisementUkrainian forces used long-range drones to strike an ammunition depot inside Russia shortly after a shipment of Iranian missiles had arrived at the facility. "Defense forces continue to undermine the enemy's military potential," the Ukrainian military said in its statement. Kyiv has relied on homemade, long-range drones for this campaign because it is restricted from using its inventory of Western-provided missiles to strike Russian territory.

This process, known as river piracy, set in motion a chain of geological events that reshaped the landscape, scientists reported Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience. While some instances of river capture and landscape remodeling began millions of years ago, others are happening today, she added. Evidence of one ancient example still exists around the edges of the Himalayas, where long-ago river capture eroded deep gorges. Han’s simulations suggested that river capture would have dramatically increased the flow of water in the Kosi’s lower segments. Compared with river piracy, erosion and uplift unspool over a much longer time span — and are still happening with Everest, Lhotse and Makalu.

Ukraine has used long-range drones to strike multiple ammunition depots inside Russia this month. AdvertisementRussia maintains an extensive air-defense network, but it hasn't been able to stop Ukraine from using its long-range drones to strike deep, according to a new Western intelligence update. Ukraine said its long-range drones managed to bypass Russia's air defenses and strike an ammunition depot in the Volgograd region over the weekend, marking Kyiv's latest attack. Russia's inability to repel long-range Ukrainian attacks is nothing new, though. Kyiv has relied heavily on locally produced drones to wage this campaign because it is restricted from using Western-provided missiles to strike Russian territory.

Projections from ORF public television based on exit polls suggest that the pro-Russia, anti-immigration Freedom Party, or FPÖ, has finished first, with 29.1% of the vote. It appears to have knocked the ruling conservative Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP), or Austrian People’s Party, into second place, with 26.2% of the vote. But it has fallen far short of an absolute majority in the tight election and will need help to form a stable government. But even if the party fails to form a coalition government, the result will serve as a symbolic victory for the far right. Chancellor and ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer has so far ruled out any coalition that includes Kickl.

In 2008, Israel killed Hezbollah’s military leader, Imad Mughniyeh, in Damascus, Syria, yet the group only gathered strength in the years that followed. Four years earlier, Israel killed a founder of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, in an airstrike. The US has its own history of killing terrorist leaders in the hope that it will cripple its foes. ISIS also carried out devastating terrorist attacks in the West, for instance, in Paris in 2015 that killed 130 people. The UN estimates there are about four hundred members of al Qaeda living in Afghanistan today.

Beirut CNN —Killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was a step toward changing “the balance of power in the region for years to come,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Saturday. In June 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon with the goal of crushing the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. This new group, with Iran’s help, proved to be far more lethal and effective than the Palestinian militants Israel had successfully driven out. People gather near the site of the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut's southern suburbs, Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024. Beyond Lebanon and Israel, there is the example of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, a lesson in the wages of unfettered hubris.

People walk past election campaign billboards showing Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the Austrian People's Party (OeVP) and Herbet Kickl of the far-right Austria Freedom Party (FPOe) on September 24, 2024 in Vienna, Austria. They appear to have edged out the ruling conservative Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP) or Austrian People's Party, into second place with 26.2% of the vote. But even if the party fails to form a coalition government, the result will serve as a symbolic victory for the far-right. Though Austria is a member of the European Union, its far-right party leading the polls has strong links with Russian President Vladimir Putin — the bloc’s arch nemesis. The chairman and top candidate of the Freedom Party of Austria Herbert Kickl waves to supporters after kicking off his party's electoral campaign on September 7, 2024 in Graz, Austria. Kickl’s vision is to build “Fortress Austria” and “Fortress Europe,” as he put it during a debate on Austrian public television Thursday night. In 2016, party leader Heinz-Christian Strache signed a formal “cooperation pact” with Putin’s United Russia party. The FPÖ’s return is far from certain, currently polling at 27%, narrowly ahead of the ruling Austrian People’s Party on 25% and the Social Democratic Party of Austria on 21%, according to European polling aggregator PolitPro.

Olga, who did not want to give her last name for privacy reasons, said the proposed bill doesn’t change her plans. And the Russian parliament gave its initial backing Wednesday to legislation that would ban the adoption of Russian children by people from countries that allow gender transition. “It’s not because I read ‘childfree’ information or someone tried to persuade me not to have children. It’s just that I decided it for myself,” said Panarina, 40, adding that the proposed legislation would not change her mind. For her, the proposed legislation is not about women’s rights per se, Panarina said, as much as the government’s effort to defend Russia’s traditional way of life.

Ukraine narrowly won the battle of Irpin in the war's earliest days. That's the conclusion of American and British experts who examined the fighting along the Irpin River northwest of Kyiv. "The Battle of Irpin River was a close-run thing," wrote Richard Sladden, Liam Collins and Alfred Connable in an article in British Army Review, a British military magazine. An attack in the east and south of Ukraine was the most likely course of action, therefore Ukrainian forces were primarily arrayed against this." Russian forces weren't prepared to rapidly deploy pontoon bridges to replace those across the Irpin River that Ukrainian troops had blown up.

Tel Aviv CNN —The Israeli military claims that Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in Friday’s airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon. Israeli fighter jets targeted the headquarters of the militant group, located in an area of the capital’s southern suburbs known as Dahiyeh, the Israeli military said in a statement on Saturday. Israeli strikes razed buildings to rubble, and killed at least six people, according to the country’s health ministry. The IDF said it was targeting what it alleges are buildings used by Hezbollah as command centers, weapons productions and storage sites. Hezbollah has denied that its weapons are being stored in civilian buildings targeted by Israeli strikes.

As Tehran watches its most prized non-state ally take a beating, questions are mounting about how it may respond. Israel then began an air assault that killed several Hezbollah commanders and led to the highest number of casualties in Lebanon in almost two decades. The Israeli military has claimed that Nasrallah has been killed, but Hezbollah is yet to comment on the matter. But it’s not an easy option as they will (become) targets, and they don’t understand Lebanon.”Under what circumstances would Iran intervene? So far, we have yet to see a barrage of rockets from Hezbollah that has caused significant (and known) damage to Israeli targets.
