Writers are disappointed that ads are coming to Netflix, disrupting its longtime clean user experience. But other Hollywood TV and film writers hope the new revenue could help pay for more shows and better promotion. But for the writers and producers who make the shows and movies for the leading streamer and other platforms, feelings are mixed. TV writers and filmmakers who spoke to Insider recoiled at the idea of ad breaks in their programs. It's just that Netflix shows will now be structured more like broadcast or Hulu and less like HBO."
Netflix will report third-quarter earnings Tuesday, and all eyes are on its new ad-supported tier. Wall Street hopes that the streamer's Basic with Ads plan will boost subscriptions and revenue — but some analysts are skeptical. Complicating matters further, analysts at Wedbush Securities warned that the streamer may report hundreds of thousands of additional subscriber losses this quarter. A recent survey conducted by Samba TV with Harris X found that nearly half of current Netflix subscribers said they'd consider simply trading down their existing membership to the forthcoming cheaper service. While the service still counts more than 220 million overall subscribers, Netflix has blamed the losses on increased competition and account sharing.

Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. is planning to reinvigorate its pharmacy business partly through a marketing push designed to regain customers that stopped spending with the chain during the Covid-19 pandemic. The program lets executives analyze where customers are shopping and what they are buying, and use that information to reach out to them with more personalized marketing, Ms. “This is primarily a digital plan.”Walgreens plans to assess data to group customers into various communities, depending on what their needs are and where they shop, according to Ms. Brown, the customer chief. But a community of “support seekers,” who may need more pharmacy support, would be targeted with marketing around a store’s pharmacy services, Ms. Brown said. Walgreens in May named former Calvin Klein executive Linh Peters as its chief marketing officer, in part because of her experience leading marketing and loyalty programs at Starbucks, Best Buy, Target and Ulta.

Netflix will charge $6.99 per month for its new advertising-supported tier, which the company will roll out in the U.S. on Nov. 3. Netflix's "Basic with ads" tier will include an average of four to five minutes of commercials each hour and won't give users the ability to download movies and TV series. A limited number of TV series and movies will initially be unavailable due to licensing restrictions. To help advertisers understand reach, ratings company Nielsen will use its standard digital audience measurement, Digital Ad Ratings, in the U.S. beginning in 2023. The streaming company will have hundreds of advertisers at launch and has nearly sold out its inventory, the company said in a media conference call.

As a result, we’re seeing significantly elevated correlations between bond markets," said Andy Sparks, head of portfolio management research at MSCI. "The high level of correlation across global bond markets means that allocating to ex-U.S. bonds is that much less effective," said Gregory Peters, co-chief investment officer at PGIM Fixed Income. Peters doesn't expect the correlations to moderate until central banks' monetary policies diverge significantly, and he has reduced his exposure to sovereign bonds outside the U.S. "That's something that brings these global issues on U.S. investors' radars, because they are becoming first order market drivers." Martin Harvey, portfolio manager of the Hartford World Bond Fund, expects monetary policy regimes to start diverging next year.
But its current leading man, its MVP for the month, is Jeffrey Dahmer, the notorious serial killer who died in 1994. “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is currently Netflix’s most-watched title, according to its self-reported data released September 27, amassing more than 196 million viewing hours in the past week. And in case that hasn’t satisfied interest in all things Dahmer, that will be followed Oct. 7 by “Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes,” the latest installment in that docuseries franchise, which in the past has featured Ted Bundy and most recently John Wayne Gacy. While “Monster” might have sought to anticipate certain criticisms, that’s one that Netflix – and indeed, the entertainment industry – hasn’t resolved. “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is currently playing on Netflix, and “Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes” will premiere Oct. 7.

A judge rejected MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell's request for DOJ to return his seized cellphone. The judge cited an appeals court decision against Trump in his lawsuit over the Mar-a-Lago search. Trump appointed Judge Eric Tostrud, who denied Lindell's bid to get his phone back. Ruling against Lindell, Tostrud did not have to look far to find legal precedent backing up his conclusion that the phone should remain in the Justice Department's hands. Rarely does an appeals court decision so rapidly grow legs that it is cited in a separate case within 24 hours.
Ron DeSantis overpowered his own Legislature to pass a map that adds an additional four GOP seats. Nationally, Republicans are likely to net three to four House seats from new maps alone — most of the five seats they need to regain the majority. There are 36 House Democrats not running for re-election, mostly because many opted to retire rather than risk serving in the wilderness of the minority. And there’s state Sen. Jen Kiggans, a nurse practitioner and former Navy pilot challenging Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria in Virginia Beach. "Not only do I run five businesses off of it, I don't use a laptop, I don't use a computer, everything was on that phone," Lindell said.
