Brilliant Brazil meet France in blockbuster World Cup clash

AUCKLAND, July 29 (Reuters) - A confident Brazil side will look to build on their dazzling Women's World Cup opener while France aim to kick-start their campaign when the two meet in a blockbuster clash on Saturday, where a win would assure the South Americans a last 16 spot. France beat Brazil 2-1 in extra time in the last 16 of their home World Cup in 2019. "The team is loud, there is a lot of confidence," Brazil coach Pia Sundhage said. "Not conceding goals is very important but, at the end of the day, it will be more important to score goals against France. Jamaica will be without star striker Khadija Shaw, who will serve a one-game suspension after being sent off against France.

The Panama-registered Fremantle Highway was transporting 2,857 cars from Germany to Egypt, 25 of them electric. An electric car was the suspected source of the blaze, a coastguard spokesperson said, adding that the ship was still burning. The crew had tried, but failed, to extinguish the fire, the coastguard statement said. The injured crew were taken by helicopter to medical facilities on the mainland. The fire began on Tuesday night on the 199-metre Panama-registered Fremantle Highway, which was en route from Germany to Egypt, forcing several crew members to jump overboard. Rescue ships sprayed water onto the burning boat to cool it down, but using too much water risked its sinking, the Dutch coastguard said. The coastguard said on its website that the cause of the fire was unknown, but a coastguard spokesperson had earlier told Reuters it began near an electric car. Coastguard spokesperson Edwin Granneman said salvage experts were trying to work out next steps for the burning boat. CNN —Just five days into the 2023 Women’s World Cup and many of the tournament underdogs are already making a name for themselves. On Thursday New Zealand won its first Women’s World Cup game by beating Norway. Even if results haven’t gone the way of the smaller teams, many games have been much closer than expected. “Once upon a time, the US in particular was very dominant but you see the gap is closing and the smaller nations are jumping on that bandwagon,” Donaldson added. It was the first point the Reggae Girlz had earned at a World Cup, having only played one previous tournament.

Borges bags hat-trick as Brazil breeze past Panama
  + stars: | 2023-07-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
ADELAIDE, July 24 (Reuters) - Ary Borges scored a hat-trick on her Women's World Cup debut to help Brazil thrash debutants Panama 4-0 at the Hindmarsh stadium in Adelaide on Monday and get their campaign off to a winning start. Brazil, whose best finish at the global soccer showpiece was runners-up in 2007, have now won all nine of their opening Women's World Cup matches. Borges netted her second of the match 20 minutes later as she poked in a rebound after having a header saved by Bailey. Marta enjoyed a lively cameo, registering an effort on target with a free-kick, but the forward was unable to add a record-extending 18th World Cup goal to her tally. Brazil next face France in a mouth-watering clash on Saturday in Brisbane, while Panama take on Jamaica in Perth later that day.

AUCKLAND, July 24 (Reuters) - Former champions Germany and fellow powerhouses Brazil will kick off their Women's World Cup title challenges on Monday, while newcomers Morocco will make history by becoming the first Arab side to compete in the tournament. Second-ranked Germany won consecutive World Cups in 2003 and 2007 but their last major triumph, excluding an Olympic gold in 2016, was a decade ago when they won an eighth European Championship. "Women's football teams have come closer than ever," Voss-Tecklenburg said before Germany face Morocco in Group H in Melbourne. Veteran forward Marta, Brazil's record scorer with 115 goals, will begin her sixth and final World Cup with the Group F opener against debutants Panama in Adelaide. ADELAIDE, July 23 (Reuters) - Brazil must not take anything for granted at the Women's World Cup and must enjoy playing on the biggest stage if they harbour any hopes of reaching the final, coach Pia Sundhage said on Sunday. "The most important thing is we don't take anything for granted and please enjoy the game ... Sundhage said Marta is '100%' after working with the high performance coach but would not confirm if the 37-year-old veteran, who is playing in her last World Cup, would start. “I’m reading it … I’m like: ‘Wait, Jamaica has a women’s football team? Six years earlier, in 2008, underfunding had led to the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) disbanding the women’s national team program. Marley’s work has helped not only improve standards and conditions for players, but also helped shift the country’s attitude towards the women’s national team. But when things really heat up, they adjust their body temperature in relation to the air temperature through strategies called thermal buffering and thermal tolerance. Thermal buffering includes physical acts like moving into a cooler, shadier area or slanting wings out of the direct path of sunlight. “These are molecules that many animals, butterflies and humans included, produce to protect themselves from high temperatures,” Ashe-Jepson said. For the thermal buffering test, the researchers caught, tested and released 1,334 butterflies representing 54 species from six butterfly families. To test thermal tolerance, a smaller group of the captured butterflies was put to work one more time.
