Wall Street is turning more bullish
  + stars: | 2024-06-18 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
New York CNN —It’s tough being a Wall Street bear these days. The S&P 500 index has climbed nearly 15% this year and clinched 30 record-high closes. The new backdrop of cooling inflation coupled with rate cuts on the horizon is prompting investors to up their bullish wagers. Evercore ISI raised its price target to 6,000 for the S&P 500, a reversal from its previous, more gloomy 4,750 target. Much of the S&P 500 index’s returns are tied to the mega-cap tech Magnificent Seven stocks, leaving the market dependent on just a handful of names to continue its monster run.

With OceanGate closed for business, the market for Titanic sub tourism appeared to slam shut. One leading sub operator, eager to demonstrate that the Titan sub failed to live up to the industry standards that can make trips to the ocean floor relatively safe, is already planning its own journey to the wreckage of the Titanic, where Titan was headed before it collapsed. But in its pursuit of “increasing access to the deep ocean through innovation,” OceanGate frequently skirted regulations and pushed back against industry standards. 2) OceanGate’s sub designs were so experimental, no other commercial sub operation would ever replicate them. “The deep ocean is no place for compromise,” Triton said in its statement.

New York CNN —Nvidia, Wall Street’s artificial intelligence poster child, is now the most valuable company in the United States. Apple is the third most valuable company in the US with a $3.27 trillion market cap. Nvidia earlier this month joined the tech giants in becoming the only US companies to cross a $3 trillion market cap. Nvidia’s chips are unmatched in producing processors that power artificial intelligence systems, including for generative AI, the technology backing OpenAI’s ChatGPT that can create text, images and other media. The Jensen Huang-led company’s dethroning of Microsoft comes as Wall Street’s most prominent tech companies battle for the coveted top spot.

Along with stifling days comes the risk of developing dangerous heat-related conditions, such as dehydration, heat stress, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other hazards. What responsibilities does your employer have to prevent you from suffering a heat-related illness? While some states have specific laws governing occupational heat exposure, there is no heat-specific federal regulation mandating how employers must prevent heat illness in the workplace. Nationwide Pet, the country’s largest provider of pet insurance, says it is dropping about 100,000 policies between now and next summer to keep up with spiraling costs in vet care. The move comes as other types of insurance, from homeowners to vehicles, are increasingly becoming harder to obtain for many Americans. There was roughly a 10% to 12% increase in homeowners’ insurance costs last year in the United States, Mark Friedlander, spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, a nonprofit industry association, previously told CNN. The higher costs insurers face from higher replacement costs and re-insurance, the type of insurance used by insurers to limit their own risks, is getting passed down to consumers. Insurers in states like California and Florida have paused issuing policies altogether.

The market has been on a tear in 2024, driven higher by robust corporate earnings and the artificial intelligence boom. Traders expect the Fed to begin easing rates in September at the earliest, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. If inflation is cooling down but the Fed is still expected to keep its key lending rate higher for longer, what does that mean for the stock market? The data will tell us that, but I think the big takeaway for us is [inflation] going in the right direction. Do you expect some of the cash that’s on the sidelines to enter the stock market?

How to pick a good, affordable college before applying
  + stars: | 2024-06-17 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
New York CNN —Long before you take your high schooler on college campus tours, consider this: Shopping for college shouldn’t be any different than shopping for a home. Getting into that top 25% cohort is based on SAT or ACT scores, and having a high, unweighted GPA based on a rigorous high school curriculum. Other ways to reduce college costs before applyingWhile your children are in high school they can take other steps to reduce the total cost of their education. If their high school doesn’t offer them, there is a program called Freshman Year for Free offered by the Modern States Education Alliance. Getting the minimum AP scores a college requires to earn a college credit will lower how much you ultimately have to spend on tuition.

The studio’s latest animated film, “Inside Out 2,” has rocked the lethargic summer box office, becoming the first movie of 2024 to reach $100 million in domestic sales during its opening weekend. Heading for a $155 million weekend per Comscore estimates, the movie marks the most lucrative box office opening since last July’s “Barbie,” which grossed $162 million. According to Comscore and Disney, “Inside Out 2” has also cinched the No. “The story of the summer was always going to come down to how Pixar (‘Inside Out 2’) and Marvel (‘Deadpool & Wolverine’) rebounded,” said Loria. Citing a former co-worker of Lewis’, a private investigator and its own investigation of newspaper archives, the New York Times said Lewis used phone and company records that were “fraudulently obtained” through hacking and paying sources for information. A spokesperson for the Washington Post told CNN Lewis declined to comment. The Washington Post did not respond to CNN with regard to these allegations. “It’s as bad as I’ve ever seen it, truly,” one staffer said earlier this month, noting that the Washington Post has hit “rough patches” before but that the stormy atmosphere hanging over the outlet is unprecedented. New York CNN —Whiskey, steaks and ties are all typical gifts for Father’s Day, but one specifically made for the holiday takes the cake: Fudgie the Whale. Fudgie helped Father’s Day become Carvel’s busiest day of the year for buying cakes, Salerno said. The incident occurred April 11 aboard Southwest Flight 2786, but only came to light publicly on Friday after Bloomberg reported Southwest sent a memo to pilots about the incident. Flight tracking data from ADS-B Exchange shows the plane dropping at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute while only 600 feet above sea level. Gas prices today are not cheap – but they are miles away from that point. Of course, gas prices were cheaper during the Covid-19 pandemic because demand was severely low. In CEO meeting, Trump promised more tax cuts
  + stars: | 2024-06-14 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
During his meeting on Thursday with CEOs in Washington, Trump told the executives he wants to cut the corporate tax rate to 20%, down from 21% currently, the source said. Trump has previously said that one of his core issues for a second term would be extending the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, one of his signature achievements in office. Those tax cuts, widely criticized by Democrats, are set to expire at the end of 2025 and extending them could cost $4.6 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. An even deeper cut to the corporate rate could add to the cost. Trump’s comments on tax cuts were previously reported by The New York Times and other outlets.

New York CNN —Titanium that was distributed with fake documentation has been found in commercial Boeing and Airbus jets. Now the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft manufacturers and supplier Spirit AeroSystems are investigating whether those components pose a safety hazard to the public. The FAA and Boeing confirmed that they are investigating the matter. Airbus has also had problems with some of the engines that have grounded some of its planes owned by different airlines.

How should traders invest in a higher-for-longer rate environment? Before the Bell: What do higher-for-longer rates mean for the stock market? What I find interesting and actually kind of invigorating is the resilience of the US economy in the face of these expected higher-for-longer rates. There will be some sectors that higher-for-longer rates will impact. And so we can see consumer durables slowing down or suffering a little bit in this higher-for-longer rate environment.

In other words, they were faking work, perhaps with the kind of mouse jiggler that you can buy online for $20. At any rate, some bankers over at Wells Fargo seem to have gotten caught last month. “And that’s a symptom of a much larger problem.”In Wells Fargo’s case, managerial mistrust would be understandable, given the bank’s history. 3 risks to global economic growth

The World Bank on Tuesday raised its 2024 outlook for global economic growth to hold steady at 2.6%, an increase from its previous projection of 2.4% growth. “Four years after the upheavals caused by the pandemic, conflicts, inflation, and monetary tightening, it appears that global economic growth is steadying,” Indermit Gill, the World Bank’s chief economist, said in a release accompanying the report. Prospects for the world’s poorest economies are even more worrisome.”Here are three risks the World Bank sees. The World Bank said that spillover risk from the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel-Hamas war could curb global growth by pushing up oil prices and shipping costs. Apple is now the most valuable US public company
  + stars: | 2024-06-13 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
New York CNN —Apple edged past Microsoft on Thursday to become the most valuable public company in the United States, as announcements made at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference including generative AI features for iPhones sent the stock climbing. Apple shares rose 0.6% on Thursday and have popped 8.8% so far this week. Microsoft shares rose 0.1% on Thursday. The iPhone maker’s comeback comes just a week after Nvidia on June 5 surpassed it to become the second-largest public US company. Although the partnership will likely give the company a much-needed boost, Apple aligning itself with a company and a technology that have yet to win public trust has raised criticism, especially for taking user inputs and incorporating them into ChatGPT’s data set.

Despite all the good news, there’s one giant, inescapable reason why people don’t feel like the economy is as good as it actually is. Shelter costs — which include rent and an estimated cost of homeownership — were up 5.4% from a year ago. There are some early signs that the housing market is becoming a bit less stuck. At the same time, the one-two punch of inflation and high borrowing costs have discouraged first-time buyers, reducing competition for houses. Of course, as Powell noted in his speech Wednesday, it may take “years” for housing inflation to normalize.
