Tesla and automakers in China have found ease and success in having fewer options. Car buyers like having options — but as the Tesla and Chinese automakers continue to find success in electric vehicles, old-guard automakers would do well to force buyers to compromise. Elon Musk's automaker has pared down the build options it gives customers to fewer color options and interior choices, limited trims, and many features that simply come standard. The lack of build complexity has been an advantage for Tesla, startup EV makers, and Chinese competitors, experts say. "A number of the traditional players have initiatives underway to benchmark the build complexity of their start-up competitors."

BPA is an endocrine disruptor, meaning that it mimics or interferes with the body’s hormones. It governs weight management and your energy levels, not to mention your skin’s appearance and your ability to fend off illness. Others have tried to argue that some of the chemicals in clothing fell within the legal and regulatory limits. The signs that something is very, very wrong with our reproductive health and endocrine systems are myriad. After all, you might be undoing the benefits of hitting the gym every day when your workout clothes could be doing so much damage to your health.

Prosecutors need only show “a pattern of racketeering activity,” which means crimes that all were used to further the objectives of a corrupt enterprise. The Georgia courts have concluded that a pattern consists of at least two acts of racketeering activity within a four-year period in furtherance of one or more schemes that have the same or similar intent. That means the act might allow prosecutors to knit together the myriad efforts by Donald J. Trump and his allies, like Rudolph W. Giuliani, to overturn his narrow loss in Georgia in the 2020 presidential race. At its heart, the statute requires prosecutors to prove the existence of an “enterprise” and a “pattern of racketeering activity.” The enterprise does not have to be a purely criminal organization. A number of the crimes Mr. Trump and his allies are accused of are on the list, including making false statements.

Mr. Garland, who made the announcement at the Justice Department’s headquarters in Washington, said David C. Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, who has handled the case for years, would become the special counsel. The move comes seven months after Mr. Garland appointed Robert K. Hur to be a special counsel investigating whether President Biden has mishandled classified documents. Mr. Garland said he made the decision to elevate Mr. Weiss after the prosecutor informed him on Tuesday the investigation had “reached the stage” where the powers of a special counsel were necessary to continue. Mr. Garland said Mr. Weiss would have the authority to investigate all related matters in his inquiry and might bring charges in any jurisdiction. The appointment on Friday all but ensures that a yearslong investigation into a wide array of conduct in Hunter Biden’s life — including his foreign business dealings, drug use and taxes — will continue.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has qualified for the first Republican presidential primary debate set for later this month, his White House campaign said Tuesday. Pence joins at least half a dozen other candidates who have already clinched spots on the debate stage, including Florida Gov. "Hopefully, former President Trump has the courage to show up," O'Malley said. For lower-polling candidates — a bucket that could include everyone except for Trump and DeSantis — a breakout debate performance could be critical. Donald Trump is the most-indicted front-running presidential candidate ever. Indeed, it’s not that he’s winning despite the indictments; it’s almost as though he’s winning because of the indictments. Before this, the presumption in contemporary politics has been that a serious presidential candidate would have to withdraw if indicted. If the time and resources necessary to fight criminal charges didn’t dissuade him or her, the voters would leave the candidate no other choice. Why hasn’t this happened to Mr. Trump?

Icahn's company has been on a roller-coaster ride since the Nathan Anderson-led short seller took a public short position in May, alleging "inflated" asset valuations, among other reasons. Shares of IEP, a holding company that is involved in myriad businesses including energy, automotive and real estate, tumbled nearly 44% in the second quarter. Shares of Carl Icahn's conglomerate Icahn Enterprises experienced a sharp sell-off Friday after the firm slashed its quarterly dividend in half amid notable short seller Hindenburg Research's campaign. Hindenburg took issue with IEP's high dividend yield, saying it's "unsupported" by the company's cash flow and investment performance. Icahn Enterprises on Friday reported a net loss of $269 million for the second quarter, more than doubling the loss of $128 million from the same quarter a year ago.

The Tate brothers and two Romanian female accomplices were released from house arrest and put under judicial control for a period of 60 days from August 4 to October 2, according to a court statement. US officials are concerned Putin is prolonging efforts in Ukraine in hopes Trump wins in 2024, CNN reported. Putin likely believes Trump in the White House would mean dwindling US support for Ukraine. And so do the Ukrainians and our European partners," one unnamed source told CNN. Fifty-five percent of the Americans polled responded that they believe Congress should not approve more funding to support Ukraine.

"I think this is very winnable, but it's not the slam dunk that the documents case is," Neama Rahmani, President of West Coast Trial Lawyers and a former federal prosecutor, said, referring to one of Trump's other federal indictments. Trump's January 6 trial is likely to be more reliant on witness testimony than his classified documents case. In that case, prosecutors have surveillance footage, phone records, and even an audio recording of Trump discussing the classified documents in question to help bolster their case. Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesA prosecutorial path forwardSmith, however, may already be laying the groundwork to get ahead of some of the challenges in the case, Rahmani said. Donald Trump has now been indicted three times, accused of crimes occurring before, during and after his presidency. But the indictment does more: It skillfully avoids breathing air into a Trump claim of selective prosecution. To not have brought this case against Mr. Trump would have been an act of selective nonprosecution. Mr. Smith has now said he can prove the same conduct beyond a reasonable doubt. Although the Jan. 6 select committee referred Mr. Trump for investigation for inciting an insurrection, Mr. Smith wisely demurred.

Chris Christie on Tuesday railed against former President Donald Trump for using donations to his political operation to help pay his myriad legal bills. "Most of the money that middle-class Americans have given to him, he's spent on his own legal fees," Christie said on CNBC's "Squawk Box." And he's paying his legal fees," Christie said. His latest attacks followed the release of campaign finance reports from Trump's political operation showing his PAC has spent more than $20 million on legal fees in the first six months of the year alone. Trump said last month that he is a target in that election probe, a sign that charges are likely forthcoming.

The struggle for the soul of country music is on full display now as two very different songs have been making headlines. Michael Loccisano/Getty ImagesThese two songs, so differently received yet recorded under the same big country umbrella, are an embodiment of the crossroads where country music currently stands. Like all musical traditions that fuse, evolve and splinter, country music and its legions of fans are engaged in a negotiation for the genre’s main identity. When the Dixie Chicks spoke out against the Iraq War in the early 2000s, their popularity in country music circles never fully recovered.. Small towns, fast cars and American values are as essential to country music as four chords and the truth.

What is a superseding indictment?
  + stars: | 2023-07-28 | by ( Erin Snodgrass | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
Special Counsel Jack Smith filed two new documents charges against Trump in a superseding indictment. Superseding indictments allow for additions and changes to a case in light of new evidence. A superseding indictment is a criminal complaint brought by a grand jury that changes, adds to, or replaces an original indictment in the wake of new evidence. The superseding indictment brought in the documents case this week also added a third defendant, maintenance worker Carlos De Oliveira, to the case, as well as additional charges against Trump aide Walt Nauta, who pleaded not guilty to the counts against him earlier this month. He faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in New York in addition to the classified documents case.
