Elizabeth Whelan hugs her brother Paul Whelan at Joint Base Andrews following his release from a Russian prison. Alex Brandon/APPresident Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris walk with family members of the returning Americans to greet them at Joint Base Andrews. Today, their agony is over,” said Biden, who hosted the families of Gershkovich, Whelan, Kurmasheva and Kara-Murza at the White House. Whelan, Gershkovich and Kurmasheva flew roughly 10 hours from Ankara, Turkey, on top of a three hour and 45 minute flight from Moscow to Ankara. This is typical protocol for wrongfully detained Americans who return home.

As families shop for school supplies, how should they prepare for the spread of viruses and other diseases? Dr. Leana Wen: Historically, respiratory illnesses peak later in the year when the weather gets cooler. CNN: As families shop for school supplies, should they also pick up Covid tests or medications to treat respiratory illnesses? Despite using these and other preventive measures, it’s likely that kids will contract respiratory viruses many times during the school year. Which means adults would also do well to prepare for what happens if we get sick — and take preventive measures accordingly, too.

The case returns to Judge Tanya Chutkan one month after the Supreme Court issued a game-changing ruling on presidential power. But the Supreme Court interceded earlier this year and put the case on pause to consider Trump’s claims of presidential immunity. Attorneys working on the case believe that Chutkan will move quickly with the case back in her jurisdiction, according to sources familiar with their thinking. Any move she makes will be under extreme scrutiny, given that it’s the only remining federal case against Trump after the Florida federal judge overseeing his classified documents case, Aileen Cannon, dismissed those criminal charges against Trump and his two co-defendants. Cannon appeared to hold hearings on nearly every motion in the Trump case before her, but Chutkan often rules without hearing from the parties in person.

She is not one of us. When former President Donald J. Trump challenged Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity at a public forum on Wednesday — and again on social media the next day — that was the message at the core of his remarks. It is a tactic that has long been part of the underside of American politics: presenting an opponent as somehow “other” or “not one of us” — someone who cannot be trusted or truly known. But while this has been a recurrent theme in American campaigns for at least a century, Mr. Trump has taken it to a new level, historians and analysts said. Mr. Trump has personally led the effort, explicitly falsifying the biography of his opponent and invoking race and gender in ways no modern major-party leader has done before.

This was a day to forget for the United States men’s soccer team. As seen from the graphic below, Morocco dominated the game in key statistical metrics, ending the United States’ hopes of a medal. Thus concludes the United States men’s two-tournament summer. Tanner Tessmann was at the heart of most of the United States’ positive passages. Pelosi said online meetings are more structured than a coffee chat or desk-side discussions in the office. Opinion | The Dangerous Game That Iran Is Playing

One of my ironclad rules of reporting in the Middle East is that sometimes you need to rereport a story to see things even more clearly than you did earlier. I’m having that experience with the Iran-Israel-Hamas-Hezbollah war, which could soon draw in the United States. Iran has been building that network to supplant America as the most powerful force in the Middle East and to bleed Israel to death by a thousand cuts inflicted by its proxies. But America must always be wary about what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is up to. As a former Israeli diplomat, Alon Pinkas, observed in Haaretz on Thursday, one has to wonder why Netanyahu chose now to assassinate the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran — in the middle of delicate hostage talks.

Ismael Zambada García, one of the founders of the Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico, appeared in court in Texas on Thursday, one week after he was kidnapped by his former business partner’s son and flown across the U.S. border into the hands of American agents. The appearance in Federal District Court in El Paso for an initial hearing was routine as a legal matter, but it also represented a consequential moment in the history of the drug war. It was the first time that Mr. Zambada García, a wily drug lord who had managed to evade capture for decades, was brought before a judge to be held accountable for what prosecutors have described as a nearly 50-year career of drug dealing, murder and corruption. Last week, that career was cut short when Mr. Zambada García, who is 76 and known as El Mayo, was lured from one of his mountain hide-outs to the Mexican city of Culiacán, which has long served as a stronghold for the Sinaloa cartel. Instead, he was ambushed, muscled onto a plane and flown across the border to a small regional airport near El Paso.

The company's sales team has been struggling to adapt to a much different market, according to 14 current and former employees from Tesla's sales division in North America. The carmaker is also attempting to fix a spate of bad publicity surrounding its CEO, Elon Musk — all with little in the way of advertising initiatives or traditional sales strategies. The electric-car maker made its mark by breaking industry standards with its ad-free, direct-to-consumer sales model. Now, some of Tesla's sales staff believe it's time for the company to begin acting like a traditional automaker. Musk has been vague about when a new, more economically priced Tesla model would hit the market, saying only that it could happen in 2025.

Yesterday, Iran and Hamas accused Israel of killing Ismail Haniyeh, one of the most senior leaders of Hamas, while he was in Tehran. (Haniyeh was Hamas’s lead negotiator in cease-fire talks to end the Gaza war, which began with the Oct. 7 attacks.) And the groups themselves say they do not want a wider regional war. The law firm hired by the Harris campaign to investigate potential vice-presidential candidates has completed its work, leaving the final decision — the most important yet of the still-new campaign — squarely in Vice President Kamala Harris’s hands. Covington & Burling, the Washington law firm tasked with the vetting, completed the job on Thursday afternoon and turned over its findings to Ms. Harris, according to two people briefed on the process. The Harris campaign has suggested it will announce the decision by Tuesday evening, when the vice president and her to-be-named running mate begin a five-day tour of presidential battleground states, starting in Philadelphia. Several of the contenders, including Govs. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Andy Beshear of Kentucky, canceled events this weekend, reflecting both a desire to be available for those conversations and to avoid drawing additional speculation from the news media about their chances.
