Gavin Newsom vetoed an artificial intelligence safety bill on Sunday. Gavin Newsom vetoed an artificial intelligence safety bill on Sunday, a win for AI heavyweights like OpenAI and Big Tech companies that lobbied against it. The debate in California reflects the challenge governments face walking the fine line between allowing tech companies to innovate while protecting against new potential risks. Elon Musk, who founded AI company xAI last year, said last month that although it was "a tough call and will make some people upset," he thought "California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill." Several former OpenAI employees also supported the safety bill and said that OpenAI's opposition to the bill was disappointing.

Polyester sheets may be cheaper than other fabrics but I still wouldn't buy them. Polyester sheets aren't as breathable as cotton ones. ShutterstockMy go-to fabric for sheets will always be 100% cotton, followed by pricier linen and silk. Polyester is made from plastic fibers and isn't as breathable as natural materials, making it unideal for temperature control. Unlike a cotton sheet, which will soften over time, polyester materials may show wear and tear more quickly with regular washes.

Amazon’s election coverage plan engendered lots of TV industry chatter when it was first reported by Puck and Variety over the weekend. The notion of a Big Tech heavyweight distributing its own election night TV show would have been hard to imagine a decade ago. The Amazon election event – which has yet to be named – will be his first major project since signing off MSNBC three years ago. California governor vetoes contentious AI safety bill
  + stars: | 2024-09-29 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Reuters —California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a hotly contested artificial intelligence safety bill, after the tech industry raised objections, saying it could drive AI companies from the state and hinder innovation. The AI industry is growing fast in California and some leaders questioned the future of these companies in the state if the bill became law. Developers of AI software operating in the state would have also needed to outline methods for turning off the AI models, effectively a kill switch. Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta Platforms, all of which are developing generative AI models, had expressed their concerns about the proposal. Newsom separately signed legislation requiring the state to assess potential threats posed by Generative AI to California’s critical infrastructure.

Trump, more so than any American president in modern history, has directly targeted individual US businesses, threatening them with everything from boycotts and canceled federal contracts to unthinkably high tariffs. Deere, the farm equipment maker founded nearly 200 years ago, became just the latest storied brand to get singled out by Trump. Bigger picture, the attack on Deere fits a broader pattern of Trump bullying companies when it suits him. “John Deere is an outstanding company. “Ultimately, it would lead to fewer sales, less revenue, less growth and fewer employees for John Deere,” said McDaniel, now a senior research fellow at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center.
