Insider Today: Tech workers are bummed
  + stars: | 2023-10-17 | by ( Dan Defrancesco | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +7 min
AdvertisementAdvertisementIn today's big story, we're looking at why some tech workers don't love their jobs anymore. Many factors led to the shift, from significant layoffs in Big Tech to in-office mandates and financial pressure due to high interest rates. AdvertisementAdvertisement(Interestingly enough, Terrazas writes that workers in non-tech roles — like human resources and marketing — report the highest job satisfaction at Big Tech companies.) But it feels like tech workers themselves will end up having to do a bit of recalibration. Working in Big Tech has become a job like any other corporate gig.

The ATM was supposed to wipe out bank tellers. And yet, here we are in 2023, with unemployment in the US at 3.8%, and an estimated 9.6 million jobs available. Tech typically creates more jobs overallSimply put, technology creates more jobs than it takes away. For example, there were fears that the advent of ATMs would put bank tellers out of work. And sure enough, a few years after the adoption of the ATM, there were fewer bank tellers per branch.

NetSuite, owned by Oracle (ORCL.N), said that it is using its parent company's cloud-based systems to develop the new "Text Enhance" feature. In NetSuite's case, some of the new features are aimed at automating the mundane day-to-day tasks of a finance department. Other new NetSuite features are aimed at reading and analyzing financial data to generate summaries and reports. NetSuite said the "Text Enhance" features will roll out over the next six months. The company said typical use levels of the new features, which rely on a new supercomputer built by Oracle, will be included in existing subscription prices, but further new AI features or higher use levels may include additional costs.

Deer Are Everywhere, but We Barely Know Them
  + stars: | 2023-10-16 | by ( Ashley Stimpson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
On June 4, 2013, Buck 8917 did something weird, for a deer: He took a long, purposeful walk. Researchers from Penn State had captured and put a GPS collar on the adult male that spring in Bald Eagle State Forest, about 15 miles northeast of State College, Pa. Put a tracker on most deer and you’ll find they stick pretty close to their home range, which was true for 8917. Then, in 2015, after two mating seasons, two hunting seasons and thousands of laps around his home range, Buck 8917 died — unsurprising given he was about 4 years old. Now in its 10th year, the study has tracked more than 1,200 white-tailed deer around 100 square miles of Pennsylvania forest.

[1/2] 'Yes' campaigners drive past voters lining up at a polling booth during The Voice referendum in Queanbeyan, Australia, October 14, 2023. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese misread the public mood, analysts said on Sunday, as he took responsibility for the referendum result, in which only the national capital voted "Yes" from among eight states and territories. Elected in 1996, Albanese saw the failure of the 1999 referendum for Australia to become a republic. Dutton may not try to win back these Teal seats at the next election, Kenny said, adding that almost all of Labor's rural and outer-suburban, working class seats voted "No". Former Liberal Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who will join the board of Fox Corp next month, praised Dutton's "courageous" campaign against the referendum in an interview with Sky News.

By Kirsty NeedhamSYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's decision to deny constitutional recognition to its First Peoples could herald a more divisive "Trump-style" politics at the next national election, while pushing the prime minister to pivot to cost of living issues, some analysts said. "The landmark case reaffirms the importance of the continuous disclosure rules to maintain market integrity," the ASIC said in a statement on Friday. "The decision also confirms that a significant take-up of shares by underwriters in a capital raising may be considered price sensitive information requiring market disclosure." Since 1949, all female recruits have gone through boot camp at the South Carolina base; the 4th Battalion was created in 1986 as the women's unit. Inside the pool, men and women struggle side by side, jumping off a platform and swimming to the other end. Some measure of all-male companies would be necessary no matter what because there just are not enough female recruits to go around. The split, she said, divided them into “male Marines” and “female Marines,” and that shaped the men’s view of the women and made it more difficult for them to work together as they moved along. Young female recruits, who usually come from high schools where there is little separation, acknowledge the differences but voice no complaints.

Most of the people participating in the trend are in their 20s, citing various reasons for quitting ranging from low wages to burnout. LiangAccording to China’s LinkedIn equivalent Maimai, out of 1,554 employees across various sectors surveyed from January through October 2022, 28% resigned that year. A similar movement, dubbed the Great Resignation, had taken off in the United States, with almost 50 million people quitting their jobs in two years. Despite the proliferation of higher education degrees, China’s economy doesn’t currently require as many high-skilled workers and it takes time to transform the economic structure, she said. The resignation trend could affect fertility, but it’s not yet clear how, she said.

There is no guarantee that Scaramucci, Bankman-Fried's father Joseph Bankman or his brother Gabriel Bankman-Fried will testify during the trial, which is expected to last six weeks and kicked off on Tuesday with jury selection. Prosecutor Danielle Sassoon read the list of dozens of names - which included both proposed prosecution and defense witnesses - to see if any prospective jurors knew them. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon spoke with Bloomberg about how he thinks AI will impact the future of work. Dimon said that he thinks AI will eventually cut down the work week to three and a half days. Many leaders have been advocating for a 4-day workweek, with AI making this move more plausible. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon thinks that the next generation of workers will only need to go into the office 3.5 days a week, thanks to AI.
