Republican U.S. presidential candidate and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum speaks during Fair-Side Chat with Governor of Iowa Kim Reynolds (not pictured), at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa, August 11, 2023. Doug Burgum was injured playing basketball and may not be able to attend the first Republican presidential debate Wednesday night. The post included included a black-and-white photo of a younger-looking Burgum playing basketball in a gym. Burgum is one of eight candidates to meet the Republican National Committee's qualifications for the first debate. It was not immediately clear if the RNC would consider replacing Burgum with another Republican candidate if the governor is unable to appear.

REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 22 (Reuters) - Iowa residents living along the route of the U.S.'s largest proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) pipeline told state regulators they were worried about possible ruptures and land takings at the start of a hearing that will determine the fate of the project. The hearing, which could last weeks, is a major test for the $5.5 billion pipeline proposed by Iowa-based Summit Carbon Solutions, and for CCS, which the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden sees as a critical tool in fighting climate change. Jessica Marson told the board she feared the pipeline could rupture and that its construction could harm her 80 acres of cropland. Summit told Reuters it has secured agreements from nearly 75% of residents along its Iowa route, accounting for 499 miles, and that it is working to sign on the 480 remaining landowners.

“The ground is already really dry — it doesn’t take much for the heat to kind of just build up over there,” said Paul Pastelok, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather. “And that’s what makes it a bigger heat dome that we’re seeing right now.”In the Minneapolis area, better known for its foreboding winter conditions, forecasters said daily temperature records could fall on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with readings of 99 or 100 degrees possible. Meteorologists said high temperatures were forecast to reach up to 20 degrees above average throughout Iowa and neighboring states over the next few days. The humidity will make it feel even more oppressive, with heat indexes that could approach 120 degrees. Forecasters have issued heat alerts, ranging from advisories to excessive heat warnings, for roughly 100 million people across 22 states.

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as he campaigns at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. August 12, 2023. Trump has a history of paying for at least some of his allies' legal counsel. His entire political network, including his joint fundraising committees, spent over $70 million combined from the start of 2020 through the end of 2022 on legal fees, according to a report by OpenSecrets. People familiar with the big bills in the Georgia case told CNBC that many caught up in the case are not expecting any help from the Trump political network. Trump co-defendants can expect to pay their lawyers "seven figures if it's a dollar," meaning at least $1 million, said Randy Zelin, a veteran attorney who specializes in white-collar crimes.

The Plan to Boost GOP Primary Turnout

Prosecutors have put a political whirlpool in motion. Presidential candidates converged again this month on the Iowa State Fair to flip sizzling pork chops, nibble peculiar speared foods, and scout for undecided caucus-goers. Yet history suggests most Iowans, and even most Republicans, are more into the fair rides and butter sculptures than primary politics. In the November 2016 election, Iowa’s 2.4 million adults cast 1.6 million votes, 801,000 for Donald Trump. How many Iowans were counted in that year’s GOP caucus?

WASHINGTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Eight top Republican presidential contenders will take part on Wednesday in the first debate of the 2024 primary election cycle. All major Republican candidates will be present with one major exception: former President Donald Trump. They are also required to sign a pledge certifying that they will support the eventual Republican nominee. In some cases, during previous primary campaigns, poor performances have sunk candidacies, while strong performances have launched minor candidates into the top tier. Several more are likely, with an October debate likely to occur in Alabama, according to a person familiar with the operations of the Republican National Committee.

A judge set former President Donald Trump's bond at $200,000 in the Georgia criminal case accusing him of conspiring to overturn his loss in the state's 2020 election, a court filing showed Monday. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee set Trump's bond for the racketeering charge at $80,000, while the remaining 12 counts each received bond amounts of $10,000, the court filing shows. McAfee set a $100,000 bond for John Eastman, the pro-Trump lawyer who is charged with nine counts in the Georgia case. Kenneth Chesebro, another pro-Trump lawyer and co-defendant, had his bond set at $100,000 on one count of racketeering and six counts of criminal conspiracy. Ray Smith's bond was set at $50,000, while the judge set a $10,000 bond for Scott Hall.

Asked if Trump should drop out of the presidential race, the Louisiana Republican told CNN's "State of the Union" program: "I think so. Trump is the leading Republican presidential candidate despite mounting legal woes that include four criminal indictments, one of which involves his handling of U.S. classified documents after he left the White House in 2021. I think Joe Biden needs to be replaced but I don't think Americans will vote for someone who's been convicted.

The Moline, Illinois-based company posted a 60% rise in quarterly profit, yet investors were seemingly unimpressed as shares slumped for the world's largest farm equipment maker. While it easily beat profit expectations, Deere's stock slump is consistent with other cyclical companies that have outperformed estimates. Deere expects 2023 net income between $9.75 billion and $10.00 billion, up from its previous outlook of $9.25 billion to $9.50 billion. WASHINGTON, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Law enforcement officials were investigating threats related to former President Donald Trump's election interference probe in Georgia, after the names and addresses of grand jury members were shared online, the local sheriff's office said. "Our investigators are working closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to track down the origin of threats in Fulton County and other jurisdictions," the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Thursday. The DeSantis campaign, Never Back Down and Axiom did not immediately respond to requests for comment. DeSantis' campaign, which is in charge of the Florida governor's debate preparations, is under no obligation to accept Never Back Down's advice, and it is unclear if they will. Trump, who is by far the frontrunner, has said he is unlikely to take part in the debate, which will take place in Milwaukee. That leaves DeSantis as the top target on the stage, even as his hold on second place is shrinking.

Tim Scott has a window of opportunity in the Republican presidential primary race as the top two polling candidates face their own unique challenges. The expanding legal entanglements confronting former President Donald Trump and the stalled campaign of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis could prompt some Republicans to look harder at alternatives before the Jan. 15 Iowa caucuses kick off the nomination process. Unlike some of the more combative candidates in the race, Scott offers an optimistic message, generally refrains from attacking rivals, and is almost universally liked among GOP primary voters who see him on the campaign trail. Now he has to convince them that they like him enough to support him.

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump campaigns at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. August 12, 2023. Georgia state prosecutors allege he and 18 co-defendants conspired to illegally change the results of the 2020 election, which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis charged Trump and his co-defendants with 41 criminal counts. Trump himself faces 13 counts including racketeering, false statements and soliciting a public servant to violate their oath. Trump’s lawyers are likely to argue that his efforts to change the election results were protected speech under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Mark Meadows, Trump's former White House chief of staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman were among those charged. "Rather than abide by Georgia's legal process for election challenges, the defendants engaged in a criminal, racketeering enterprise to overturn Georgia's presidential election result," Willis said at a press conference. A third indictment, in Washington federal court, accuses him of illegally seeking to overturn his 2020 election defeat. Trump persists in falsely claiming he won the November 2020 election although dozens of court cases and state probes have found no evidence to support his claim. Willis's investigation drew on testimony from Trump advisers including Giuliani, who urged state lawmakers in December 2020 not to certify the election, and Republican state officials like Raffensperger and Governor Brian Kemp, who refused to echo Trump's false election claims.

"Trump and the other defendants charged in this indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump," the indictment said. A third indictment, in Washington federal court, accuses him of illegally seeking to overturn his 2020 election defeat. Trump denies wrongdoing in this case as well, and a trial date has yet to be set. Willis's investigation drew on testimony from Trump advisers including Giuliani, who urged state lawmakers in December 2020 not to certify the election, and Republican state officials like Raffensperger and Governor Brian Kemp, who refused to echo Trump's false election claims.
