In Iowa, where evangelical Christians dominate the first-in-the-nation Republican presidential caucuses, Rowland and other pastors are delivering a message meant to resonate both biblically and politically. While curbing abortion has for decades energized Christian conservatives like no other issue, the attack by Hamas and Israel's response have put new pressure on Republican candidates to hew not just to traditional Republican support for Israel but to beliefs rooted in the Bible. Some Christians support Israel due to Old Testament writings that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is their rightful homeland. Some evangelicals believe Israel is key to an end-times prophecy that will bring about the return of the Christian messiah. Daniel Hummel, author of “Covenant Brothers: Evangelicals, Jews, and U.S.-Israeli Relations," said that Republican support for Israel has become a proxy for other conservative priorities, particularly on immigration.

This $5 Billion Biotech Home Run Took Less Than a Year

Ownership of the drug went from Pfizer to Roivant and then to Roche with stunning speed. Photo: Stefan Wermuth/Bloomberg NewsYou can’t completely blame Pfizer ’s executives, yet Roche ’s $7 billion acquisition of a bowel-disease treatment that it owned until last year isn’t a great look. In a deal that now feels like a biotech version of “Moneyball,” Roivant announced it was selling an asset that only 11 months ago it got for free from Pfizer. Big pharma companies focused on the drug industry equivalent of free agent signings will often overlook one of their own hot prospects. In fact, Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy founded Roivant on the idea that pharma’s trash can be another company’s treasure.

Roche acquired a bowel-disease treatment from Roivant for over $7 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported. AdvertisementAdvertisementRoche's acquisition of a bowel-inflammation treatment delivered a massive windfall for presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy's company Roivant, the Wall Street Journal reported. But Roivant's expenses to develop the treatment, which targets an inflammatory protein called TL1A, amounted to just $15 million. And just this month, a $1.5 billion collaboration between Sanofi and Teva Pharmaceuticals was announced for more TL1A treatment. "This is a $15 billion market just in the US, and that's just in [inflammatory bowel disease," Roche chief Teresa Graham told the Journal.

Sen. Tim Scott's presidential campaign, once seen as emerging force, has faltered in recent weeks. Scott has sought to offer an optimistic message to voters, but Trump remains on top in the GOP race. The rise of fellow South Carolinian Nikki Haley has also complicated Scott's path to the nomination. Over the course of Scott's campaign, his campaign has so far focused heavily on winning the Iowa caucuses, and during the summer he was seemingly clipping at Florida Gov. A leading Scott backer, who spoke to Politico anonymously, remarked that the senator's campaign team "fundamentally miscalculated what it means to run for president and generate news coverage."

GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie has a basic message for House Republicans: Get a speaker. AdvertisementAdvertisementNearly three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted as House speaker, House Republicans have been unable to coalesce around a successor. For GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie, he's already seen enough. Once a Trump ally, Christie in recent years has become a major critic of the former president, which has both elevated his candidacy and turned off sizable numbers of GOP voters. However, of all of the early-voting states, Christie is best positioned in New Hampshire, where he's largely focused his campaign.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThe 2024 presidential election is quickly approaching — and there's a lot on the line for student-loan borrowers. While most federal borrowers were not required to make any payments for nearly three years of President Joe Biden's first term, they were also hopeful for broad debt relief. Now the Education Department is in the process of crafting a new plan under a different law. Here's what Republican presidential candidates are saying about the Education Department — and how it could impact millions of student-loan borrowers. And while private banks administer non-federal loans, borrowers with private debt often face higher interest rates without the option for federal relief.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday blocked in full a lower court ruling that would have curbed the Biden administration's ability to communicate with social media companies about contentious content on such issues as Covid-19. Donald Trump was president at the time, but the district court ruling focused on actions taken by the government after President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. But the appeals court still required the White House, the FBI and top health officials not to "coerce or significantly encourage" social media companies to remove content the Biden administration considers misinformation. The administration turned to the Supreme Court hoping to freeze Doughty's ruling in full. The district court ruling was on hold while the Supreme Court decided what steps to take.

India's ITC misses profit estimates as competition, costs rise

REUTERS/Vivek Prakash/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBENGALURU/CHENNAI, Oct 19 (Reuters) - India's ITC (ITC.NS) reported a smaller-than-expected rise in its second-quarter profit on Thursday, as the consumer goods major grappled with stiff competition from smaller rivals and higher prices of some commodities. Dove-soapmaker Hindustan Unilever said earlier in the day it lost some market share in its mass segment - comprising lower-priced products - due to competition. The tobacco-to-hotels conglomerate's profit still rose 10% to 49.27 billion rupees ($592.81 million), but missed analysts' average estimate of 49.54 billion rupees, according to data from LSEG. Revenue from operations rose 3% to 177.05 billion rupees, helped by a 10% surge in its cigarettes business. Other consumer goods majors Nestle India (NEST.NS) and Hindustan Unilever eased past quarterly earnings estimates earlier on Thursday, as city dwellers spent more on affordable pick-me-ups like cookies and coffee.

Washington's tightened grip on artificial intelligence chip sales to China could have long-term implications for Nvidia , 2023's famed AI darling. Through Wednesday's close, Nvidia, the dominant AI player, had lost 7% this week, while Advanced Micro Devices and Marvell Technology slumped more than 2%. What it means for Nvidia Nvidia said in an SEC filing this week that the latest government curbs could hinder its new product development timeline, and a handful of chip models. The major aim of the latest U.S. restrictions is to prevent China from harnessing advanced semiconductor chips to strengthen its military. To be sure, Nvidia isn't the only company slated to feel the pressure from the latest export curbs.

In comparison, among 358,876 adults who lived with others, a much smaller share — 1.6% — died of cancer in the study. “We found that working adults living alone had a 1.32 times higher risk of cancer death than adults living with others,” said Dr. Farhad Islami, an author of the study and senior scientific director of cancer disparity research at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta. That suggests that adults living alone have about a 32% higher risk of cancer death. Compared with adults living with others, adults living alone were more likely to have fair or poor self-reported health status, activity limitation, serious psychological distress, severe obesity, smoke cigarettes, or consume alcohol, according to the study. So, those who live alone may be vulnerable to social isolation,” Milbury said in the email.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is crushing his Republican presidential rivals in the contest to raise campaign cash, putting the other White House hopefuls in an unenviable position before the first votes are cast in January. The amount of cash a candidate has in reserve offers a window into the health of their campaign. But the stark disparity between Trump, whose presidential campaign had $37.5 million at the end of September, and the balances held by his rivals like former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, Florida Gov. Pence entered October running on fumes with $1.1 million cash on hand and debts of $621,000. The rate at which he has burned through cash is not sustainable absent a large infusion of cash.

Former Vice President Mike Pence is having an unusually quiet week on the trail after filing a finance report showing his campaign facing money troubles. The usually busy Pence campaign’s only public event this week was a pre-planned Tuesday Newsmax town hall in Windsor Heights, Iowa . Instead, the Pence campaign says he will be in Dallas for private fundraisers and a Republican National Committee event. That puts a serious strain on the day-to-day operations of the campaign — and what's more, Pence also faces a sprint to amass the 70,000 unique donors needed to qualify for the Nov. 8 GOP presidential debate. His campaign has not yet commented on how close it is to meeting the donor threshold, which was a struggle for Pence in the lead-up to the first GOP debate in August.
