It’s still early in the primary season, but a whiff of a possible polling error is already in the air. In Iowa, the final 538 polling average showed Mr. Trump leading Nikki Haley by 34 points with a 53 percent share. In South Carolina, Mr. Trump led by 28 points with 62 percent. In the scheme of primary polls, these aren’t especially large misses. But with Mr. Trump faring well in early general election polls against President Biden, even a modest Trump underperformance in the polls is worth some attention.

Nikki Haley may have lost one of her deep-pocketed donors in the Koch brothers-backed political network, but New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu thinks she can still attract the dollars necessary to prevent a second Trump presidency. Last month, the former South Carolina governor brought in $16.5 million. We want winners," Sununu said.

Former President Donald Trump trounced Nikki Haley in her home state of South Carolina's primary. And if Trump does as well as his campaign predicts, he could secure the GOP nomination by March 12. Haley was left as the sole remaining major candidate to oppose Trump in January after Florida Gov. South Carolina's Republican delegates are uniquely not bound to a specific candidate post-primary election, making it difficult to calculate the exact number of delegates each candidate will finish with. If Trump and his reelection campaign continue down their established path of dominant primary victories, he'll be incredibly close to blazing past the majority mark he needs to secure the Republican nomination.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump looks on at a campaign event in Waterford Township, Michigan, U.S., February 17, 2024. The Michigan contest is the final major race before the election calendar broadens dramatically on Super Tuesday, March 5. The results this Tuesday will be closely watched for any clues about where Michigan is trending before the November election. But primary voters in Michigan can pick "uncommitted," which could give some in his party the option of casting what is essentially a protest vote. Meanwhile, the Michigan Republican Party is trying to emerge from an internal struggle between competing pro-Trump factions.

CNN —The influential network associated with billionaire Charles Koch will no longer throw its money behind former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary and will instead focus on key Senate and House races, the group announced in an email to staff obtained by CNN. Americans for Prosperity Action’s endorsement in November was a significant boost for Haley as she sought to become the leading alternative to former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary. But while the race has come down to Haley and Trump, the former president remains the dominant front-runner after a strong victory in Haley’s home state on Saturday. “AFP is a great organization and ally in the fight for freedom and conservative government.

Of the two main candidates that you’re talking about, Joe Biden refers to anyone who doesn’t support him as fascist. Donald Trump refers to anybody that doesn’t support him as vermin. I call everybody who supports me or doesn’t support me Americans. Biden did once call the “philosophy” behind Trump’s movement “almost like semi-fascism,” but he did not go so far as to label the philosophy fascist, let alone to say any American who doesn’t support Biden is fascist. This time, the former South Carolina governor avoided declaring that Biden calls anyone who doesn’t support him fascist or all Trump supporters fascist.

But his overwhelming victory on Saturday in South Carolina, where he defeated Nikki Haley in her home state, makes it all but official. The Republican nominating contest isn’t a competition. The stakes were extraordinarily high: Many of his Republican opponents see Mr. Trump as, at best, unelectable and, at worst, a threat to the foundations of American democracy. And yet, as the campaign has moved through the first nominating contests, the race has not revealed Mr. Trump’s weaknesses, but instead the enduring nature of his ironclad grip on the Republican Party. “I think the party will be done with Trump when Trump is done with the party,” said David Kochel, a longtime Republican strategist who is opposed to Mr. Trump.

Now she has lost the primary in her home state of South Carolina, where she was a two-term governor. Fellow Floridian Jeb Bush, a former governor, dropped out earlier, after a disappointing finish in nearby South Carolina. Former Rep. Dennis Kucinich also made an argument about influencing the agenda when he refused to drop out of the 2004 Democratic primary race. Could Haley win delegates without winning states? Heading into South Carolina, Trump had 63 delegates and Haley had 17.

Donald J. Trump lapped Nikki Haley in the Midwest. And now he has trounced the former two-term governor in her home state of South Carolina. The race was called the moment the polls closed, and within minutes an ebullient Mr. Trump took the stage, avoiding a mistake he made in New Hampshire when Ms. Haley spoke first and, even in defeat, gave a rousing speech that had irked him. “It’s an early evening,” Mr. Trump beamed. But Ms. Haley, the former United Nations ambassador, is still vowing to plow on, warning her party that sticking with Mr. Trump and the distractions of his four criminal indictments is a pathway to defeat in November.

Ms. Haley responded instantly, “I will never give up,” and a big cheer went up. These crowds tend to have — as a percentage, not in real numbers — more women and more couples, especially in their 60s and 70s, than the crowds at Trump events. And the most reliable response from any crowd Ms. Haley speaks to involves just the prospect of her quitting the race. This is a real emotion,” she said in a brief interview on Friday. Throughout his 2024 bid, Mr. Trump has portrayed the United States under the Biden administration as a nation in steep decline. First, he will conjure a dark vision of what he sees as the future under Mr. Biden. Mr. Biden has frequently argued that he has been a better steward of the economy than Mr. Trump, whom he portrays as having undercut working-class Americans. Under Mr. Biden, the economy grew 3.1 percent from the end of 2022 to the end of 2023. But Mr. Trump has backed off those promises in the face of polls showing that non-Republican voters are concerned that he poses a threat to democracy.

As voters in South Carolina prepare to take to the polls on Saturday, Nikki Haley has vowed to continue challenging former President Donald J. Trump for the Republican nomination — to the dismay of her onetime boss. In recent weeks, Mr. Trump and Ms. Haley, former governor of South Carolina and U.N. ambassador in the Trump administration, have dialed up their attacks on each other. Mr. Trump has mocked the absence of Ms. Haley’s husband, Maj. Michael Haley, a National Guardsman who is deployed to Africa. His campaign suggested that her staying in the race, despite being well behind Mr. Trump in delegates, was “like any wailing loser hellbent on an alternative reality.” Ms. Haley has said that her rival has “gotten more unstable and unhinged” and that he has “mental deficiencies.”But while attacking each other’s record and policies, both have turned to false and misleading claims.

Immediately after the polls closed on Saturday night, CNN projected that the former South Carolina governor had come up short to Trump. During the fourth quarter of 2023, Haley out-raised Trump, $24 million to $19 million. In January 2024, as the rest of the GOP field winnowed, Haley’s fundraising again bested Trump’s, $9.8 million to $8.8 million. To her credit, Haley has taken dead aim at both Trump and Putin, accusing the former of emboldening the latter. During the 2016 South Carolina primary, there were still six serious candidates in the GOP race.

Despite another stinging defeat, this time on her home turf in South Carolina, Nikki Haley said on Saturday that she would forge ahead in the Republican primary race regardless of the daunting road ahead. She argued that Mr. Trump would be a losing candidate in November and that the nation could not afford four more years of his turbulence or what she described as Mr. Biden’s failures. “I’m an accountant. I know that 40 percent is not 50 percent,” she said to some laughs, nodding to her share of the vote around the time she spoke. “But I also know 40 percent is not some tiny group.”
