The Ram 1500 Revolution concept truck had an extra long cab containing a folding third row of seats, something not found in other trucks. That's a feature that will be available in General Motors' Chevrolet and GMC electric trucks which were revealed last year. Yet the average sticker for base models, adjusted for inflation, has actually gone down a little — even as consumers have shifted from sedans to more expensive SUVs. That’s good news for drivers willing to go no-frills: If you don’t want to pay lots of a new car, you don’t have to. It has a base price of $15,730. These base price models may not make much money, if any, for automakers. The average price of a GMC Sierra 2500 HD, as sold, is now double the base price.

I've tested 20 electric cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks from Tesla, Ford, Porsche, Polestar, and more. But electric cars are quick, convenient, fun to drive, and quiet. Hours behind the wheel taught me some important lessons about range, charging, and our electric future. Charging can be more convenient than getting gasRecharging an electric car takes a whole lot longer than filling up on gas. The best ones offer spacious interiors and clever storageToday's electric cars typically use what's known as a skateboard platform, which is basically what it sounds like.
David Graves , 66, a retired oil-field services facility manager living outside Dallas, on his 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, as told to A.J. In May of 1955, my father, Hugh, bought a new 1955 Chevrolet, and when I was born, this was the car in which I came home from the hospital. Something must have happened during that car ride, because I have been a fan of the 1955 Chevrolet ever since.
Ford CEO Jim Farley was rather blunt about the problems that Ford experienced as it rolled out its hot EV models, the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning pickup. While both vehicles have a long list of waiting customers, Farley admitted that Ford encountered numerous problems with their production. They resumed last year, but GM ended up with total US EV sales of just under 40,000. In 2022 Ford’s US EV sales came to just under 62,000, roughly a tenth Tesla’s US sales that year. That means about 600,000 US Tesla sales for the year.
Until now, the Treasury Department considered the Mustang Mach-E a car, not an SUV, for purposes of tax credits. The tax rules seemed to defy both common sense and what the EPA was saying. Before, the Treasury Department had been relying on vehicle definitions used by the National Highway Traffic Administration to administer Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations. “This change will allow crossover vehicles that share similar features to be treated consistently,” the Treasury Department said in an announcement. 2023 and who didn’t qualify for a tax credit under the old rules may now qualify, Treasury said in its announcement.

Ford missed its profit guidance by $1.1 billion, it said on Thursday night. It was bad enough that boss Jim Farley admitted to leaving “$2 billion in profits on the table” by mismanaging costs and supply. With EV sales under 4% of U.S. volume for both companies, the jump in profit from pricing is coming from combustion-engine sales. Detroit-based peer Ford Motor reported revenue of $44 billion for its fourth quarter on Feb. 2, 9% higher than analyst estimates. However, it recorded $10.4 billion of adjusted operating profit for the full year, below guidance of $11.5 billion.
But Americans love SUVs and trucks, and they're going to have to pay for them in the near term. A lot of prospective EV buyers just haven't yet found the types of EVs they're looking for. They don't necessarily need more luxury electric sedans — they want the trucks and SUVs they're used to. A recent study found most car-buyers don't want to spend more than $50,000 to go EV, but they also want electric trucks and SUVs that inherently cost more. Bigger vehicles are often just more expensive, largely because they require bigger batteries — the most expensive part of these new EVs.

REUTERS/Aly SongLOS ANGELES, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) has unveiled a new star for some of its upcoming programming: electric vehicles from General Motors (GM.N) and other automakers. The streaming service announced an agreement on Thursday to feature vehicles including the Chevrolet Bolt, the electric GMC Hummer pickup and the Cadillac Lyriq in TV series and films "where relevant." Shows that will feature GM's electric vehicles include "Love is Blind," "Queer Eye" and "Unstable." Netflix productions also will include electric vehicles made by other automakers, the company said.
Netflix announced a new deal to integrate GM electric vehicles into popular shows like "Love is Blind" and "Queer Eye." On a press call announcing the deal, Lee said directors and showrunners would be involved in the process and that cars would be integrated in an "authentic" way so they don't "feel out of place." Netflix has a history of placing brands like Coke and GM in shows like "Stranger Things" and "Queer Eye." Lee insisted the GM deal isn't "product placement" and that GM isn't paying to put its vehicles on shows. Terms of the deal weren't shared; GM said it wasn't part of a TV ad buy on Netflix's Basic with Ads.

Suppliers familiar with GM's production plans through 2025 support the notion the automaker continues to slow-walk electric vehicle investment and output while it continues to bank money from its big combustion-engine pickups and SUVs. GM on Tuesday stuck to its plan to produce a total of 400,000 electric vehicles for North America from 2022 through the first half of 2024. GM said it has secured all the battery materials it will need to build 1 million EVs a year in North America by 2025. In the short run, GM's go-slow approach could allow it to side-step the price war that Tesla launched earlier this month. The division has 90,000 reservations for the high-performance Hummer EVs and is sold out into next year, he said.
Tesla spurred an EV price war earlier this month, with price cuts to its most popular models. But GM said Tuesday it won’t make cuts to its electric vehicles. The automaker will not be responding to the latest price cuts from Tesla and Detroit-rival Ford by cutting prices for its own electric cars, chief financial officer Paul Jacobson said on a Tuesday media call ahead of GM's fourth quarter earnings call. Facing weakening demand, Tesla slashed the prices of some of its most popular models earlier this month. GM CEO Mary Barra said Tuesday she is confident the company is well-positioned with its current EV prices.
Barring any supply chain problems, Betts said electric vehicles should be easier and faster to build than traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines for an experienced automaker. Photo by Steve Fecht for General MotorsBut others such as Hyundai Motor and Ford Motor have been ratcheting up production of EVs. Industry leader Tesla also targets to produce 2 million electric vehicles globally this year. Ford, which ranked second in EV sales in the U.S. last year, expects to increase production of its electric Ford F-150 Lightning. GM expects to ramp-up production of the Bolt models, which use older battery technology, to 70,000 vehicles this year, GM has said.
Shares of GM rallied as much as 9.5% during trading Tuesday before closing at $39.32 a share, up by 8.4%. GM's net income slipped last year, down by less than 1% from full-year 2021 to $9.9 billion, with a profit margin that was off 1.6 percentage points to 6.3%. 2023 guidanceFor 2023, GM expects net income attributable to stockholders of between $8.7 billion and $10.1 billion. It expects adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of $10.5 billion to $12.5 billion and adjusted earnings per share of between $6 and $7. Following recent price cuts for Tesla vehicles and Ford's Mustang Mach-E crossover, Jacobson said GM feels its EVs "are well positioned" with pricing.
I miss my South Brooklyn pickleball community, but hope to find a consistent place to play in San Diego. Maybe that officially makes me a woman in tech, because right now, it's the hottest club in the industry. I used to play tennis competitively, but I have so much more fun with pickleball. So if you work in tech, let's stop meeting over coffee and chat while dinking instead. These low barriers of entry, plus its social nature, make pickleball perfect for networking.
Car manufacturers don't have consistent advice on how long you should idle your car in the cold. Generally speaking, idling your car for about 30 seconds when it's cold can help it run smoothly. Others like Ford and Chevrolet recommended idling for no more than 30 seconds after starting. How much time is where mechanics diverge on the subject, but around 30 seconds is the general consensus for modern engines. What I can say is if you idle much longer than 30-60 seconds, you're just wasting gas and money.
"I think we're all building this airplane as we fly," Michael Alford, president of the National Auto Dealers Association, a trade association that represents more than 16,000 U.S. new franchised dealers, told CNBC. Automakers and franchised dealers have a complex relationship that is backed, in many states, by laws that make it difficult, if not illegal, to bypass franchised dealers and sell new vehicles directly to consumers. Both automakers and franchised dealers want to maximize profits, but they're separate businesses that heavily rely on one another to succeed. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesHonda Motor has said it plans to move more sales online, including 100% online sales for its luxury Acura brand for EVs. Jay Vijayan, who assisted in building out Tesla's digital and IT systems, doesn't believe selling EVs exclusively online will pan out.

REUTERS/Jonathan ErnstWASHINGTON, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Two senior Biden administration officials got behind the wheel of new electric vehicles (EV) Wednesday at the Washington, D.C. auto show to urge Americans to consider buying a zero-emission model. They also highlighted that since President Joe Biden took office, companies have announced nearly $130 billion in U.S. EV investment including $56 billion in EV manufacturing and $72 billion in battery production. "It's electric vehicles, it's the guts to the electric vehicle, it's the guts to the battery - the whole supply chain now locating in the United States." Congress has approved billions of dollars in new incentives, low-cost loans and other funding for EV production and $5 billion for charging stations. Some consumers are still confused about whether they will qualify for EV credits.
Tesla’s price war can only go so far

The $450 billion car company’s industry-leading profit margins give it plenty of ammo. Tesla’s fat margins mean it likely accounts for most of the profit made in the electric car industry. Either he could let demand fall further short of supply, potentially leaving Tesla’s rapidly expanding - and expensive - factories running idle. Recent reductions to Tesla's prices will help cheaper models qualify for federal tax credits, making them even more attractive. Zeroing out that profit could reduce Tesla’s implied global average selling price from $51,421 now to $38,949.
