Smartmatic and Newsmax have reached a settlement in the voting technology company’s election defamation lawsuit against the right-wing news outlet shortly before the case was set to go to trial. The lawsuit focused on Newsmax's false claims that Smartmatic's machines rigged the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden. Smartmatic sued Newsmax Media in 2021, alleging it claimed Smartmatic’s devices rigged the 2020 election. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have continued to promote false claims that the 2020 election results were manipulated to favor Biden. Smartmatic in April settled a similar defamation lawsuit against One America News for a sum that was not disclosed publicly.

Netflix is producing a docuseries from Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson about charges of sex trafficking and racketeering as well as sexual assault and violent abuse allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs. It is a complex narrative spanning decades, not just the headlines or clips seen so far,” 50 Cent and Stapleton said in an exclusive statement to Variety. While the allegations are disturbing, we urge all to remember that Sean Combs’ story is not the full story of hip-hop and its culture. At the time, 50 Cent shared a clip on X that showed Bad Boy Records rapper Mark Curry alleging that Combs would spike bottles of champagne at his parties before women drank from them. Proceeds from the documentary, the rapper-producer said, will be used to support sexual assault victims.

Harris is scheduled to visit a border town in Arizona on Friday, her campaign announced Wednesday. Trump has made the border and immigration a centerpiece of his pitch for the presidency, making multiple visits to the southern border during the campaign. Friday's visit to Douglas, Arizona, will be Harris' second trip to the southern border during her term as vice president. NBC News reported in August that shelters on the southern border and in some major cities experienced sharp declines in migrants seeking shelter over the past several months. Border Patrol agents in June apprehended the lowest monthly number of migrants crossing the southern border since President Joe Biden took office.

Washington CNN —Jury selection is set to begin Thursday in a closely watched defamation trial pitting voting technology company Smartmatic against the right-wing cable network Newsmax, in a high-stakes case over the airing of false 2020 election claims. The Newsmax case revolves around the same false claims, championed by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, that the 2020 election was rigged by Smartmatic software and others. The Florida-based company sued Newsmax and other right-wing outlets and figures in 2021, alleging that its reputation was destroyed by the lies. The Newsmax case will test the legal limits of publishing lies about the 2020 election, and the trial will play out during the final stretch of the 2024 campaign. ‘Dozens’ of defamatory reportsAfter mainstream news outlets – and even Fox News – projected that Democratic nominee Joe Biden would win the 2020 election, Trump and his surrogates falsely claimed that he won.

Rather, a company named “TheBestWatchesOnEarth LLC” licensed the Trump name to sell the line of wrist watches. This week, he also launched “Trump Coins” – a 1oz .999% silver medallion with the former president’s face on one side and his signature on the White House on the back. The two women with very similar names offer a snapshot of the different surrogate pools for Trump and Harris. The courting of celebrity endorsements is a long-running tradition in presidential politics and one that Democrats generally win. Swift criticized the fake posting, saying it was part of the reason she is backing Harris’ campaign. Even as he downplayed Harris’ level of celebrity endorsements, Trump has tried to use people with celebrity status to appeal to specific voter blocs. Shortly after Swift backed Harris, Trump said she would “probably pay a price” for the endorsement, and five days later on Truth Social he made his bluntest and most direct attack on Swift.
