The rescue was complex and, as is often the case, did not go all that smoothly. The numbers are unclear – the Gazan Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, says 274 Palestinians were killed; the Israeli military said it was fewer than 100. In the past several months, Israel has refused ceasefire agreements that would have released many hostages, to the great outrage of the hostages’ families. They, too, are not simply “casualties” or “civilians” or “collateral damage,” but people whose safety and futures have been snatched away. Brutal wars like the one between Israel and Hamas can test our humanity.

CNN —At least 25 people were arrested after setting up multiple pro-Palestinian encampments on UCLA’s campus Monday that police said were unlawful, according to a statement from the UCLA Police Department. A CNN analysis found that some of the most dramatic attacks caught on camera that night were committed by people outside UCLA – not the university students and faculty who were eventually arrested. A pro-Palestinian demonstrator is taken into custody Monday outside Dodd Hall at UCLA. Around 8 p.m., about 25 people were arrested for willful disruption of university operations, the police statement said. Tensions have simmered on the UCLA campus over how the university has responded to protesters and counterprotesters in recent months.

When Jordan Bardella, the leader of the far-right National Rally party, called on Macron to dissolve the French national parliament on Sunday night, it seemed like political posturing, riding high on his victory in European polls. Calling the far right’s bluffMacron will try to rally the right and left, urging their supporters to come together and vote against the far right, but there’s no knowing if it’ll pay off. The last time a French president dissolved the country’s lower house, the National Assembly, was in 1997. French far-right leader Marine Le Pen arrives at the National Rally party headquarters on Monday, June 10, 2024 in Paris. This could see voters of different stripes banding together to oppose a candidate from the far right.

I know we’ll want to talk about the Hunter Biden trial. The long and short of it is that Texan Latinos, once reliably Democratic, are turning against Joe Biden on account of the border chaos. Or does it merely confirm that the administration sat on its hands for more than three years while the crisis got worse? Gail Collins: Bret, there are parts of Texas that are the natural first destinations for people crossing the border illegally. Read preview"Seinfeld" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus says that comedy can be approached with sensitivity without sacrificing the art — and taking issue with political correctness is a "red flag." Louis-Dreyfus, known for her work on shows like "Saturday Night Live," "Seinfeld," and "Veep," was asked to weigh in after fellow comedian and former costar Jerry Seinfeld's recent comments about political correctness in comedy made headlines. "When I hear people starting to complain about political correctness — and I understand why people might push back on it — but to me that's a red flag, because it sometimes means something else," she said. "My feeling about all of it is that political correctness, insofar as it equates to tolerance, is obviously fantastic," the Emmy-winning actor said. HBOLouis-Dreyfus' comments come weeks after Seinfeld said there are fewer sitcoms because political correctness is ruining comedy.

CNN —Move over, Jerry. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has entered the chat. Last month, comedian Jerry Seinfeld sparked discourse online when he told the New Yorker in an interview that he felt there isn’t any “funny stuff” to watch on TV anymore, complaining that it was “the result of the extreme left and P.C. Political correctness, she later said, “insofar as it equates to tolerance, is obviously fantastic.” She added that she still reserves the right to “boo anyone who says anything that offends me, while also respecting their right to free speech.”“I think it’s just good to be vigilant,” she added. The bigger problem, she said, is the “consolidation of money and power” as it pertains to the “siloing” of Hollywood’s studios, streamers and distributors, which she looks at as the real “threat to art.”

CNN —William Lewis, the new publisher and chief executive of The Washington Post, reportedly tried to kill a story about his alleged involvement in a UK phone hacking scandal coverup, offering an NPR reporter an interview in exchange for squashing the forthcoming article. The decade-old UK scandal that engulfed right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s “News of the World” tabloid, was revived in recent years in a new lawsuit filed by Prince Harry and other notable figures including Guy Ritchie and Hugh Grant. Despite Lewis’ attempt to squash the story, NPR published the article in late December under the headline “New ‘Washington Post’ CEO accused of Murdoch tabloid hacking cover-up,” featuring a 2011 photo of Lewis with Murdoch. According to the Times, Lewis told Buzbee the story didn’t warrant coverage in the newspaper. Days later, when the judge in the UK case allowed allegations about Lewis to be included in the lawsuit, the Post published another story naming him.

Frank Bruni: Josh, Olivia, great to be with you. I want to start not with Donald Trump but with Joe Biden. What’s the optimal balance between running against a “convicted felon” and focusing on the day-to-day concerns of less partisan, less engaged voters? I for one think Biden needs to be very careful about overdoing the felon part — voters are well aware of Trump’s status, transgressions and, er, character. So Biden’s big challenge is that he really needs to reach people who aren’t interested in politics and aren’t likely to hear any given message he sends out.
