Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took issue with Biden's plan for the Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza. The Palestinian Authority used to run both the West Bank and Gaza but was ousted from the latter in 2007 after a brief civil war with Hamas. Israeli troops on Wednesday entered Gaza's largest hospital, searching for traces of Hamas inside and beneath the facility. Officials from Israel and Gaza presented different accounts of what was happening at Al Shifa Hospital. Hamas and Gaza health officials deny militants operate in Al Shifa — a hospital that employs some 1,500 people and has more than 500 beds, according to the Palestinian news agency. Throughout days of fighting in the surrounding streets, there has been no report of militants firing from inside Al Shifa. TEL AVIV—With fears rising about the safety of hostages held in Gaza, the White House sent its top Middle East adviser to the region on Wednesday to push for the captives’ release. Brett McGurk , National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, met with Israeli leaders at the start of a regional visit that is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to prevent the conflict in Gaza from spiraling into a broader regional war.
