CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris’ office on Friday is rejecting a suggestion from a senior Israeli official that the vice president’s remarks on Thursday that forcefully criticized Israel’s conduct in its war against Hamas could have made a ceasefire deal harder to reach. But the vice president’s office on Friday sought to clarify that her message to Netanyahu behind closed doors mirrored that of Biden. For example, Harris’s aides have been advocates for sanctions on violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank, one source said. “Harris and her office threw us a lifeline early on,” Dr. James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute. U.S. Economy Grew at 2.8% Rate in Latest Quarter

Gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, increased at a 2.8 percent annual rate in the second quarter, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. That was faster than both the 1.4 percent rate recorded in the first quarter, but down from the unexpectedly strong growth in the second half of last year. Consumer spending, the backbone of the U.S. economy, rose at a 2.3 percent annual rate in the second quarter — a solid pace, albeit much slower than in 2021, when businesses were reopening after pandemic-induced closings. Inflation, which picked up unexpectedly at the start of the year, eased in the second quarter. That is something few forecasters considered likely when the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates to combat inflation two years ago.

Paris CNN —French sprinter Sounkamba Sylla will now be taking part in the Opening Ceremony at this year’s Olympics, France’s sports minister told CNN, after the runner previously said she would not be allowed to because she wears a headscarf. “You are selected for the Olympic Games, organized in your country, but you can’t take part in the opening ceremony because you wear a scarf on your head,” Sylla posted on her private Instagram account Sunday, per Reuters. But in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, French sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said a solution has been found to allow Sylla to take part in Friday’s ceremony. “The issue is solved,” Oudéa-Castéra told Amanpour. The Opening Ceremony takes place on Friday and will be held along the River Seine, marking the first time that the ceremony has not taken place inside a stadium.

As that happens, the Federal Reserve is preparing to cut interest rates. A huge burst of infrastructure spending under the Biden administration has taken time to ramp up, but projects both small and large are likely to break ground in earnest in 2025 and 2026. One clear answer: It won’t be the person who shepherded some of the policies that are laying the positive groundwork. President Biden announced on Sunday that he was ending his candidacy for re-election, passing the Democratic baton to Vice President Kamala Harris. White House officials play a relatively minor role in slowing inflation and exert no direct control over interest rates.

GDP: The US economy is pulling off something historic
  + stars: | 2024-07-25 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
Washington CNN —The US economy is on the verge of an extremely rare achievement. Businesses are continuing to invest and a key gauge of consumer demand has been robust this year. As the economy continued to expand from April through June, inflation resumed a downward trend, the latest GDP report showed, and seems to be on track to slowing further toward the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Wall Street traders are convinced that the Fed will roll out the first rate cut in September, and key Fed officials have given subtle signals that they’ve become more comfortable about eventually slashing rates. America’s economy is about to stick what’s called a “soft landing,” which is when inflation returns to the Fed’s target without a recession — a feat that’s only happened once, during the 1990s, according to some economists.

It also came in above the high end of management's guidance. But here's the root of Thursday's selling: Honeywell downwardly revised its full-year guidance for segment margin, earnings per share, and cash flow guidance. The changes are tied to the inclusion of previously closed and announced acquisitions, as well as a slower-than expected-rebound for short-cycle businesses. Unfortunately, despite some "pockets of short-cycle strength," other short-cycle businesses "are not accelerating as much as we had hoped," CFO Greg Lewis said on the call. The upcoming earnings report for Apple could create a big market move that options traders can take advantage of, according to Goldman Sachs. John Marshall, head of derivatives research at Goldman, said in a note to clients that the tech giant's earnings report after the bell on Aug. 1 could deliver a positive surprise. "[Goldman] Hardware analyst Michael Ng expects Apple (AAPL) to deliver an EPS beat at upcoming quarterly earnings driven by solid growth expectations for iPad/Mac and Services.
