CNN —Scientists working in Indonesia have observed an orangutan intentionally treating a wound on their face with a medicinal plant, the first time this behavior has been documented. ArmasThe team believe that Rakus intentionally used the plant to treat his wound as he applied it repeatedly in a process that researchers say took several minutes. “This possibly innovative behavior presents the first report of active wound management with a biological active plant in a great ape species,” she said. As for how Rakus would have learned how to treat a wound, one possibility is “accidental individual innovation,” said Laumer. Another possible explanation is that Rakus learned how to treat a wound from other orangutans in the area where he was born, said Laumer.

Nearing the end of a whirlwind Middle East trip this week, Secretary of State Antony J. The captain of a dive boat that caught fire off the coast of Southern California in 2019, killing all 33 of its passengers and a crew member, was sentenced on Thursday to four years in prison after a lengthy hearing that included emotional testimony from relatives of the victims. A federal jury in November found the captain, Jerry Nehl Boylan, guilty of misconduct or neglect of ship officer, a crime also known as “seaman’s manslaughter.”Mr. Boylan, 70, of Santa Barbara, Calif., was the captain of the Conception, a commercial scuba diving vessel, when a fire broke out in the early hours of Sept. 2, 2019, while the ship was anchored near Santa Cruz Island, according to prosecutors. Mr. Boylan and four other crew members were able to escape the fire, but the 33 passengers, who were sleeping below deck, died, prosecutors said. One crew member also was killed. Prosecutors said Mr. Boylan failed to try to save them.

NYPDInvestigators believe Patricia was killed in late 1969 or early 1970 and buried in the basement of the building. With advanced forensics, they determined her parents’ identity and where they lived in Brooklyn, and scoured through local public documents. Decades earlier, around the time Patricia was believed to have been killed, the building housed a nightclub called The Scene, Glas said. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office determined in 2003 that the skeleton belonged to a teenage girl who stood 5-foot-2.

CNN —Around 47 children vanish every day in Europe, according to new research by cross-border journalism collective Lost in Europe showing more than 50,000 child migrants went missing after arrival over the past three years. The research builds on findings released in 2021 that revealed at least 18,000 child migrants disappeared upon arrival in Europe in the three years from January 2018 to December 2020. Out of 31 contacted countries, Lost in Europe received 20 responses, with seven lacking required data and 11 not responding — representing an improvement from 12 responses overall in 2021. Other significant countries of origin include Syria, Tunisia, Egypt, and Morocco, according to the data collected by Lost in Europe. Lost in Europe is a not-for-profit cross-border journalism project investigating the disappearance of child migrants in Europe.

Also called OSA, obstructive sleep apnea is a serious sleep malady in which breathing stops for 10 seconds to two minutes many times per hour each night. “It’s the breath holding or apnea from the obstructive sleep apnea that triggers the arousal, typically in men, which then triggers the sexual behaviors in sleep,” Schenck said. “It’s so interesting, because a lot of people with stress become hyposexual, not interested in sex,” Schenck said.

CNN —Ukraine is tightening pressure on men of call-up age living abroad by temporarily suspending consular services, amid a wider overhaul of the country’s mobilization rules aimed at beefing up its defenses against Russia’s invasion. The mechanism for updating and verifying military registration data “is currently being determined,” it said. After updating their military registration data at recruitment centers in Ukraine, male citizens aged 18 to 60 with valid military registration documents will have full access to consular services, the ministry said. The temporary suspension won’t affect the provision of consular assistance in case of emergencies with Ukrainian citizens abroad, it added. The new law is aimed at boosting the pool of men available to fight for Ukraine and streamline registration.
