Joe Biden in 2020. I love Joe Biden. It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe “big F-ing deal” Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw.

Many young conservatives also support student loan cancellation, with 49% of Gen Z and millennial Republicans surveyed saying some or all outstanding education debt should be erased. As president, Trump called for the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education's existing loan relief programs, including the popular Public Service Loan Forgiveness initiative. He also wanted to slash the department's budget, and his administration halted a regulation aimed at providing loan forgiveness to those defrauded by their schools. He has repeatedly attacked Biden's loan relief policies, and he said in a campaign video in late 2023 that he wants to close the Education Department altogether. For critics of broad student loan forgiveness, Biden's new plan looks a lot like his first.

Max Levchin, Affirm's CEO and a PayPal alum, shares advice for founders considering going public. As the pipeline of IPOs starts to build up again, including the anticipated debut of Affirm's buy-now, pay-later rival Klarna, Business Insider spoke with Levchin about Affirm's IPO. It's not uncommon to see startups hiring executives such as a president or CFO in anticipation of going public. Since Affirm's CFO and chief legal officer largely spearheaded the IPO process, Levchin said he was left to focus on the company's short- and long-term plans for the capital.

CNN —Former US Sen. Jim Inhofe, a former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee who was one of the most vocal climate change deniers in the US Senate, has died, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Tuesday. Inhofe, 89, served in the US Senate from 1994 until he retired in 2023. “The people he served, a group much larger than the proud residents of the Sooner State, were better for it,” McConnell said in a statement. His relentless advocacy for American energy dominance unlocked new prosperity across the country. “If we wanted the government to work for the people, not against the people, it was up to us to make a change,” Inhofe said at the time.

A Biden campaign event on Sunday in Harrisburg, Pa. Democrats have made abortion a key issue in campaigns ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In his 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump pledged that he would appoint multiple anti-abortion justices to the Supreme Court, with a goal of overturning Roe. When the court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision in 2022 ended the constitutional right to an abortion, Mr. Trump took credit. “Ask yourself: Who do you want in the White House — the man proud to overturn Roe v. Wade, or the president fighting for your rights?” the ad’s narrator says. Mr. Biden’s campaign, under intense scrutiny after his debate performance, has sought to keep the focus on Mr. Trump.

To the Editor:Re “No, I Don’t Want to Protest,” by Pamela Paul (column, June 21):I often enjoy Pamela Paul’s well-expressed and proud contrarian views. As Ms. Paul acknowledges, “we live in a country born of protest.” Was not the Revolutionary War our grand protest against Britain’s oppressive colonial rule? My guess is that Ms. Paul disapproves of the recent student encampments protesting Israel’s aggressive actions in Gaza. It is all well and good that Ms. Paul chooses not to join protesters — that is, of course, her right. She should take pains, though, to respect and perhaps even be impressed by the earnest Americans who decide for moral and/or political reasons to demonstrate for causes that may very well produce a better world.

"The one person that no one can outrun is Father Time," David Axelrod told CNN's Pamela Brown on Sunday. CNN —As President Joe Biden’s political future hangs in the balance, many inside the White House – still rattled by the president’s disastrous debate performance last month – are now gripped with anxiety and unease about whether Biden will continue his reelection campaign. Inside the White House, where TV screens are always on and set to four cable news channels – CNN, MSNBC, Fox and CNBC – the devastating headlines casting doubt on Biden’s political future have been unavoidable. In the tumultuous days since the debate, many senior administration officials have had check-ins with their teams and individual direct reports, sources said. Over the weekend, there was one widely discussed topic of intrigue: the identity of one “senior White House official” who anonymously told The New York Times that they do not believe the president should continue to seek reelection. When asked about that person, one senior White House official gave CNN a brusque response: “They shouldn’t be in the White House.

Editor’s Note: Luis “Vance” Taylor is the chief of the Office of Access and Functional Needs at the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. And for some individuals with access and functional needs, it was a nightmare. Unfortunately, nobody from the emergency management team had told the accessible transportation provider that they were part of the plan. Yet virtually all disasters have one critical commonality: They disproportionately impact individuals with access and functional needs, such as people with disabilities and older adults. Inclusive emergency management is an achievable mission.

When I saw the Michael Shear story in The Times on July 4, recounting how President Biden had stumbled talking to Black radio hosts days after his debate debacle, telling one he was proud to have been “the first Black woman to serve with a Black president,” I knew it spelled trouble. First of all, if any white man could claim to be “the first Black woman” in the Oval, it was Bill Clinton. Black fans called him “the first Black president” and feminist fans called him “the first woman president.”Second of all, we were entering a new post-debate examination period with President Biden, where his every word would be scrutinized. He was always a fast and voluminous talker, and as he has gotten older, the words and ideas sometimes tumble out in the wrong order. Also, he’s more slurry now, so words get smushed together, and words and thoughts collide; words get dropped, caesuras skipped, and sentences sometimes trail off into the ether.

To be sure, the president turned in a more energetic performance than he had on that woeful debate night, when he sometimes appeared lost and incoherent. “I just had a bad night, I don’t know why.”“And how quickly did it come to you that you were having a bad night?” Stephanopoulos asked. Only 42% said the same about Trump, 78, whose own terrible debate performance was eclipsed by Biden’s meltdown. Three separate polls conducted by CNN, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal after the debate all showed Biden trailing Trump by six points nationwide. Previous polls have shown Biden trailing in nearly all the battleground states he narrowly won in 2020.

CNN —Joe Biden’s team provided a list of questions to a radio host who interviewed the president this week in the aftermath of his debate performance, the host told CNN. CNN reporting later clarified that it was the Biden campaign that handled the interview. Blackwell pointed out that both Lawful-Sanders and Earl Ingram, host of “The Earl Ingram Show” in Milwaukee who also interviewed the president this week, asked Biden “essentially the same questions.”A Biden campaign spokesperson on Saturday did not deny that the campaign provided questions but said interviews were not conditioned on the acceptance of provided questions. Reached for comment Thursday night, a Biden campaign spokesperson slammed the “absurdity” of criticism of the president’s missteps. “Meanwhile, Joe Biden and his campaign are bullying media into asking pre-screened and approved questions and trying to pass it off like it’s normal behavior.
