President Joe Biden on Wednesday designated a World War II-era military site in Colorado as a national monument, a move that will protect the historic region's rare wildlife and plants from development. Camp Hale is best known as the location used by soldiers of the U.S. 10th Mountain Division to train for alpine warfare in the 1940s, according to a White House fact sheet. The Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument will protect more than 50,000 acres that provide critical habitat for wildlife such as elk, lynxes and songbirds. In addition to creating the new national monument, the administration also announced a proposed mineral withdrawal for Colorado's Thompson Divide, a large region of mountains, lakes and forests.

Latinos were 31 percent of the state’s high school graduates that year. But at 31%, the six-year graduation rate for MSU’s Latino students lags far behind CU Boulder, where it was 63 %. On the CU Boulder campus stands a 4-foot-7 memorial to “Los Seis,” six activists, including CU Boulder students, who were killed in two off-campus car bombings in 1974; the killings were never solved. Seventy-two percent, 510, of the middle and high school students enrolled in the program for 2020-21 were Latino. Vela and three other CU Boulder students who spoke with NBC News first learned about the campus through the Aquetza program.

CNN —The bright orange, sticky residue that Cheetos leave on your fingertips has now been immortalized – by a 17-foot statue in Alberta, Canada. The Cheetos brand erected the statue of a hand holding a massive Cheeto, complete with orange fingertips, in Cheadle, Alberta. The community was chosen because of its name’s similarity to “cheetle,” the company’s official name for Cheeto dust, according to a news release from Cheetos. But the unique piece of art won’t stay in Cheadle forever, according to the news release. Its population is tiny: just 83 people lived there in 2021, according to Canada’s census for that year.
South Dakota has the highest percentage of renters behind on payments, at 26%, according to a new study. Renters across the U.S. are feeling the sting of soaring inflation, rising housing costs and the end of the national eviction ban. Some 15% of American households, around 6 million, are behind on rent this fall, according to a recent report from MyEListing.com, a commercial real estate website. South Dakota, Alabama and New Jersey renters are struggling the most with payments, the report found, based on an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, and Americans ages 40 to 54 are having the most difficulty. These inflated costs, along with higher day-to-day expenses, have strained many Americans' budgets, with 20% or more renters behind on payments in some states, according to the MyEListing.com report.

Goodman told jurors that he’d been with the Capitol Police for 15 years and he previously was deployed to Iraq for the U.S. Army. Footage released during Trump's second impeachment trial showed Goodman directing Romney to turn around just after the mob had breached the building. The Senate chamber itself went through sweeps by K-9s and bomb squads so that Congress could resume its work, Goodman said. He told jurors to expect to see video of Jensen telling officers to do their job throughout the trial. The FBI has arrested more than 850 defendants in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
MEXICO CITY — An ancient Mexican site more than 1,000 years old has been declared the country’s first archaeological zone in a decade, antiquities institute INAH announced on Tuesday, despite several years of steep budget cuts for archeological research. Cañada de la Virgen, the modern name of an ancient Otomi ceremonial center, is located near the picturesque mountain town and tourist destination of San Miguel de Allende. Scholars believe an ancient version of the Otomi language, which is still spoken today, may have been the language spoken at Teotihuacán, the ancient metropolis near Mexico City and home to towering pyramids and temples. INAH added that past archaeological digs at Cañada de la Virgen have revealed artifacts from both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, suggesting it was located along a major trading route.

An animal voyage is special because it requires us to make many journeys all at once. My favorite record of an animal voyage is a book that’s fluent in failure. Russia does not fully control any of the four regions, with only around 60% of Donetsk region in Russian hands. With Crimea and the territory in the four other regions, Russia would gain an area about the same size as the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. If Russia goes ahead with the referendums and joins all four regions to Russia then Ukraine - and potentially its Western backers too - would, from a Russian perspective, be fighting against Russia itself. "All this talk about immediate referendums is an absolutely unequivocal ultimatum from Russia to Ukraine and the West." The conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014 after a pro-Russian president was toppled in Ukraine's Maidan Revolution and Russia annexed Crimea.
Receding water levels due to drought in Europe are unearthing old sites and artifacts. Since early 2022, Europe has experienced an extended period of unusually high temperatures and severe lack of rainfall. From megalithic monuments to ancient bridges, sites and artifacts continue to be unearthed by the 2022 drought in Europe. Pablo Blazquez Dominguez/Getty ImagesIn late July, receding water levels in Spain's Valdecanas reservoir dropped to 28% percent of its capacity, revealing the Dolmen of Guadalperal, dubbed "Spanish Stonehenge," Reuters reported. In June, receding water levels due to the intense drought resurfaced a sunken shipwreck of a World War II-era barge.

Paris plans to turn off the Eiffel Tower's lights earlier each night to save electricity. The tower's lights have given the "Iron Lady" her golden glow since 1958. In Germany this summer, cities limited heating and turned off lights to save energy. The Eiffel Tower went fully dark on Thursday after Queen Elizabeth II's death was announced.
