Prince Harry’s bitter, yearslong feud with Britain’s tabloid press will come to a head this week. He is scheduled to take the stand on Tuesday in a London courtroom for a lawsuit against the Mirror newspaper group on charges that it hacked his cellphone more than a decade ago. Since he and Meghan withdrew from royal duties in 2020 and left Britain for Southern California, Harry has become estranged from his father, Charles, and his elder brother, Prince William. Members of the royal family have preferred to settle legal claims rather than undergo the scrutiny of a courtroom. William settled a phone hacking case against Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper group, the News Group, for a “huge sum of money” in 2020, Harry claimed in a legal filing in a separate case earlier this year.

Tech stocks are riding high thanks to excitement surrounding artificial intelligence. But Bernstein says the semiconductor companies powering AI could be an even better investment. If you've followed the stock market in recent weeks, you've surely heard about Nvidia's astronomical rise. Investors have taken note and are trying to ride the wave higher, pouring a record $8.5 billion into AI tech funds last week alone. Further upstream from these AI pioneers — and also offering stock gains — are the semiconductor companies that actually produce the chips that power these assorted technologies.

LONDON — From the moment Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain took occupancy of 10 Downing Street last October, he has been haunted by his predecessors: Boris Johnson, defenestrated after serial scandals, and Liz Truss, deposed after an ill-fated foray into trickle-down economics. On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Sunak’s government faces a deadline to turn over Mr. Johnson’s Covid-era text messages, diaries and notebooks to a committee investigating Britain’s handling of the pandemic. It is the latest chapter in what seems like a never-ending reckoning with Mr. Johnson’s messy tenure. Yet for all the headlines that Mr. Johnson’s misadventures have commanded in recent weeks — including new allegations of flouting Covid lockdown rules — it is the ghost of Mr. Sunak’s short-lived predecessor, Ms. Truss, that economists say should keep him up at night. Yields on British government bonds soared last week to nearly the levels that brought down Ms. Truss after only 45 days in office.

Broadcom and VMware announced the $61 billion deal last year and recently pushed back the deadline as it undergoes regulatory scrutiny. Insider spoke with one former and four current VMware employees about the changes they expect to face once they are owned by the chipmaker Broadcom. A VMware spokesperson said in a statement that after the deal closes, VMware customers will obtain "more choice and flexibility" in managing their IT needs, especially across multiple cloud-computing services. Executives leaving VMwareVMware has lost several key executives since the Broadcom deal was announced (including several defecting to VMware's archrival Nutanix). "Nonetheless, I've continued to see questions in press reports about whether we intend to raise prices on VMware products.

If he hadn't been laid off or racked up $5,000 in parking tickets, Mark Lawrence might have never launched his digital parking company. SpotHero declined to provide revenue figures, but its website notes that it takes a 35% cut of each reservation. The company has other revenue streams, too — like selling price data analysis to parking sellers, for example. "The whole idea was that there's not enough parking, [and] how do we make it easy to park?" Turns out, there was actually plenty of parking, he says: "You just don't know where it is."
But despite all his professional success, Khe started to notice a nagging feeling that he wasn't playing the right game. "Success is like an addiction," Khe told me. When Khe told his closest confidants that he was unhappy and considering leaving BlackRock, they'd say things like "That's so risky" or "What about your daughter?" At BlackRock, Khe had job security, a seven-figure annual income, and a fancy job title. CNN —An electric guitar smashed up and signed by the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain has sold for almost 10 times its estimated value. The instrument was the headlining item in a three-day auction of pieces of rock history. The guitar, which had been reassembled but remains unplayable, was originally valued between $60,000 and $80,000. According to Julien’s Auctioneers, who staged the sale, Cobain smashed the guitar up “during Nirvana’s seminal Nevermind era,” though no specific details were given. In 2020, the guitar played by Cobain during his 1993 “MTV Unplugged” performance became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, going for $6 million.
Kurt Cobain's smashed Fender Stratocaster guitar sold at auction for $595,900, more than 10 times its original estimate. The Nirvana frontman's iconic left-handed electric guitar was smashed while the grunge pioneers were making their seminal Nevermind album in the early 1990s. Reassembled but unplayable, it was expected to sell for between $60,000 and $80,000 at the Julien's auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York over the weekend. According to Julien's Auctions, Cobain gave the guitar to Lanegan during Nirvana's Nevermind tour in 1992. The guitar Cobain played during a legendary live acoustic concert on MTV Unplugged in 1993, just five months before his death, was sold two years ago for $6 million.
Hong Kong CNN —A massive fire broke out at the historic Manila Central Post Office in the Philippine capital late Sunday, with teams of fire fighters battling for more than seven hours through the night before it was finally brought under control. The building sits within the historic old Manila town near other tourist landmarks along the Pasig River that flows through the capital. The post office was first built in 1926 and designed by Filipino architects Juan M. Arellano and Tomás Mapúa. Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)/FacebookIt was declared an “important cultural property” in 2018, meaning the country’s oldest post office was of “exceptional cultural, artistic, and historical significance to the Philippines,” according to CNN affiliate CNN Philippines. Mark Laurente, chief of staff of the postmaster general, said that national identification cards were spared from the fire as those were stored in another city, CNN Philippines reported Monday morning.

When Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, decamped Britain for the United States in 2020, he portrayed it as an act of survival against a relentlessly intrusive British press. On Tuesday, after a chaotic encounter with photographers in New York City, Harry found the media glare can be just as intense in his adopted home. With details continuing to filter out about what exactly happened to Harry, Meghan and her mother, Doria Ragland, as photographers pursued them in Midtown Manhattan, the episode underscored a basic paradox in the lives of this celebrity couple: they plead for privacy, but also seek publicity, with a Netflix documentary, a tell-all memoir by Harry and public appearances that will inevitably draw cameras. The frenzy in New York is a reminder of the grievances that Harry has held for decades against the British press, which remains the primary market for paparazzi shots of him and Meghan. In 1997, his mother, Princess Diana, died in a car crash in Paris while fleeing photographers; Harry has blamed them for her death and expressed fears that history could repeat itself with his wife and family.
An under-the-radar chipmaker could yield more than 21% upside as the company takes a broader share of the market, according to Jefferies. Rambus stock closed at $53.55 on Wednesday, and shares have gained a staggering 64% from the start of the year. In Jefferies' bull case, the stock could jump by about 50%, but it could fall about 32% in the firm's bear scenario. Lipacis thinks that the DDR5 segment of Rambus' business could drive revenue over the next four years by 15%. RMBS YTD mountain Rambus stock.
This year, advertisers and ad agencies may well use the strike as a bargaining tool, said Erin Firneno, vice president of business intelligence for researcher Advertiser Perceptions. The writers’ strike, which has entered its third week, is also injecting a new element of uncertainty for ad buyers, at a time when television viewership is declining and the possibility of recession looms. While the TV networks have long contended with splintered viewership amid the rise of social media and streaming, the writers' strike puts content production at risk, said Rishad Tobaccowala, a former executive at advertising and public relations giant Publicis Groupe and advisor on business transformation. Last year, NBC’s upfront presentation emphasized star power as the network returned to a live event after a COVID-19-imposed hiatus. Ahead of the upfront presentations, media executives sought to reassure investors about the strike’s impact.
Zepz, which owns the WorldRemit and Sendwave brands, has a total headcount of around 1,600. Money transfer group Zepz is laying off 420 employees, the company told CNBC exclusively, as the fintech sector grapples with a tough macroeconomic environment. The London-headquartered company began informing employees of the redundancies on Monday, with individual staff being told by their managers before larger communications were issued. Zepz, which owns the WorldRemit and Sendwave brands, has a total headcount of around 1,600, meaning the cuts translate to about 26% of its workforce. In June 2022, Zepz implemented redundancies affecting around 5% of its workforce, according to Sky News.
“Sorry, that doesn’t happen.”“I also don’t have a D.C.M. who brings racks of clothes into my office and tells me what I should wear,” she said, referring to the deputy chief of mission, who in the series acts as the ambassador’s fashion stylist. “I wear my own clothes.”A gauzy mix of spy thriller and soap opera, “The Diplomat” debuted last month as the most-watched series on Netflix, and remains in the top 10. It has become compulsive viewing in foreign-policy circles — easy to mock for its Bond-meets-Bourne plot twists but also a source of gratification among diplomats, who feel Hollywood is finally showing them the recognition it has long given C.I.A. agents (though the series has one of those, too).
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has been promised billions of dollars in new military aid during a whirlwind tour of European allies that reflects a striking shift in the political landscape, as Europe takes a more central role in arming Ukraine for its anticipated counteroffensive to drive Russia from its territory. And it followed Germany’s pledge to give Ukraine a nearly $3 billion package of weapons, as well as less concrete promises of additional weapons from France and Italy. It also reflects a recognition that support for Ukraine in the United States, still by far the largest supplier of weapons, is likely to come under pressure. Mr. Zelensky is concerned that as the American presidential race heats up, President Biden will be less able to lead diplomatic efforts, German and Ukrainian officials said. Should a Republican win the White House, officials worry there will be a collapse in leadership among Western allies.
Wedbush maintained its outperform rating for Tesla, and shared a 12-month price target of $215, or about 27% higher than the current share price. The long wait times for vehicles, according to Piper Sandler, is a bullish sign because it means demand is robust. "The answer is complex, because wait times don't solely reflect consumers' appetite for buying Teslas vs. other cars." In effect, the lengthy wait times should be "interpreted favorably," in Potter's view. Piper Sandler's price target for Tesla is $280 a share, or more than 65% higher from current levels.
The departure of ads chief Linda Yaccarino to Twitter has thrown NBCU into chaos. The exit comes on the heels of the departure of NBCU CEO Jeff Shell after sexual harassment allegations. One advertising executive who works closely with NBCUniversal described the situation inside the company as a "Cuban missile crisis." NBCU does have a deep bench of ad executive talent that's highly regarded in the ad industry. Although Yaccarino's departure from NBCUniversal to Twitter was a surprise, she had been close with the company and its billionaire owner.
Trump was back on CNN primetime during a town hall appearance on Wednesday night. And CNN certainly seemed to be eager for conservative buy-in during the Wednesday town hall, filling the room with a mixture of New Hampshire Republicans and effectively independent voters. The former president's advisor told other outlets that the town hall was an effort to underline Trump's 2016 strategy of reaching beyond the traditional GOP coalition. During the Wednesday town hall, Trump called Carroll a "whack job," echoing the very falsehoods that landed him with a defamation charge this week. "The predictably disastrous @cnn town hall was indeed disastrous," former broadcast exec and current dean of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University, Mark Lukasiewicz tweeted.
In 2024, Sinema would likely need support from conservative voters who doubt the 2020 election. "Well, we're currently living in a climate where it's okay to say things that aren't true," Sinema said. "What I think we're facing in our country today is this situation where people don't know what's true and what's not true," said Sinema. Sinema again blamed "the two political parties" for becoming "more extreme." Lake says she's "seriously considering" a Senate campaign, and Sheriff Mark Lamb, already running in the GOP primary, has also cast doubt on the validity of the 2020 election.
Yet each, in its own way, confirmed a Britain on the cusp of change. The stinging defeat of the Conservatives in elections on Thursday suggested that Britain’s governing party could very well be swept from power in the general election that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak must call by January 2025. The crowning of Charles definitively turned the page from the 70-year reign of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and thrust the monarchy into an uncertain future. Three years after Britain left the European Union, and nine months after Britons grieved the death of the queen amid political and economic upheaval, the country is still groping for a post-Brexit identity. But even if its ultimate shape is not clear, Britain seems poised for a new era, both in politics and the monarchy.
