An inquiry published Thursday into the murder of a young woman three years ago by a London police officer — a case that rattled Britain and set off a broader reckoning in the country about violence against women — has found that the police force missed signs of a troubling past that should have prevented him from being hired. The woman, Sarah Everard, 33, was abducted, raped and murdered in March 2021 by Wayne Couzens, a member of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. Mr. Couzens was later sentenced to life in prison for the killing. “Wayne Couzens was never fit to be a police officer. Police leaders need to be sure there isn’t another Couzens operating in plain sight.”

Standing over a tiny bundle wrapped in a sheet on a hospital bed, a young father drapes his hand across his face in despair. “Nutrition? “The mother gave birth to him during the war.”“The health of the mother affects the health of the baby,” he added. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the head of the pediatric department of Kamal Adwan Hospital, said this month he was seeing a number of deaths among children, especially newborns. “Signs of weakness and paleness are apparent on newborns because the mother is malnourished,” he said.

A Belfast court ruled on Wednesday that a new British law granting people immunity from prosecution for crimes committed during Northern Ireland’s bloody sectarian conflict — known as the Troubles — would be a breach of human rights. The British government introduced the legislation, known as the Legacy Act, last year, aiming to “promote reconciliation” in the region, despite opposition from every political party there. Crucially, the law also includes provisions for conditional amnesty for people suspected of crimes committed during the Troubles, including serious offenses. Wednesday’s decision, by the High Court in Belfast, was the result of a judicial review that it carried out after victims and families affected by the Troubles brought the issue to the court. Judge Adrian Colton, who delivered the ruling, said he believed that granting immunity from prosecution under the act would breach the European Convention on Human Rights.

Billionaire Mark Cuban built his career using advice his dad gave him at age 14: Time is your most valuable asset. Sometimes, his dad brought him along to sweep floors — and, more specifically, show him the limits of working for someone else. "This time wasn't spent to learn about what my dad did, but to learn that his job didn't have a future," says Cuban, 65. "I wanted to make enough money so I didn't have to respond to anybody else," Cuban said in a MasterClass released last week. "I could make my own schedule and live my own life the way I wanted to do it."

The Crooked House, a pub in England’s West Midlands that was demolished last year after a suspicious fire, could soon be rising from the rubble after its owners were ordered to restore the pub to its former lopsided glory. The tavern, known as “Britain’s wonkiest pub” for its slanting walls and floors, was sold to a private developer in July 2023. Around two weeks later, the pub caught fire in a suspected arson attack and the developers who had bought it brought in the bulldozers. With the support of local politicians, they launched a public campaign to see the building restored and someone held accountable for its destruction. South Staffordshire Council, the local authority for the area where the pub once stood, on Tuesday ordered the owners to rebuild the pub within three years, restoring it using original materials and with its original character maintained.

I never buy drink packages since I don't drink enough to get my money’s worth. I like to have a nice cocktail or two, but I don't drink enough for a whole package. Megan duBoisMost of the major cruise lines, like Carnival and Royal Caribbean, offer drink packages. Plus, the packages really vary across companies — some cruise lines give you 15 drinks a day while others have unlimited options.
