This is the word of the summer on Wall Street

New York CNN —Bifurcation is the word of the summer. Or it’s the word of the summer among investors, at least. It’s a word that the market gets hung up on and then all you do is hear that word. But I think that’s nearing an end, and so I would expect a slowdown in consumer spending. I’m not so sure that’s going to happen this time because their balance sheets and cash flows aren’t as strong.

CNN —The summer movie season typically starts with a bang during the month of May and, particularly, during Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend (Friday through Monday) movie ticket sales are estimated at $128.3 million, according to Comscore data provided to CNN. In fact, the US box office is on track to have its lowest-grossing Memorial Day weekend since the $117.1 million seen in 1995, when “Casper” haunted the screens — and that’s not even adjusting for inflation. The tepid Memorial Day weekend continues what’s been a lukewarm start to the summer box office, a movie-going season that’s still reeling from the effects of last year’s Hollywood strikes. Industry experts agree that the 2024 box office has been sluggish so far , but remain hopeful that the box office can rebound by the end of the year and beyond.

The growing need to feed power-hungry artificial intelligence models could benefit an under-the-radar power management stock, according to Wall Street analysts. Last year, Eaton also said that data centers and IT accounted for 14% of revenues. Ahead of Eaton's quarterly print, Bank of America analyst Andrew Obin highlighted the stock as a "pure-play electrical equipment" with high-growth businesses beyond data centers. "While data center remains the strongest end market, it seems that other end markets (residential, distributed IT) improved more than expectations to drive beats," he wrote. Elsewhere, Mizuho's Brett Linzey highlighted Eaton's "extended revenue visibility" given its "mega projects" aimed at meeting reshoring and data center needs.

Across Mexico, dozens of candidates, their relatives and party members have been targeted in violent attacks ahead of next month’s general election, which will be the country’s largest election ever in terms of voters and seats. At least 36 people seeking office have been killed since last June, a New York Times analysis found. It’s a gruesome milestone even for Mexico, where violence has been a part of campaign seasons for decades. Why is election violence so bad? The surge in violence plaguing Mexico can largely be traced to local criminal groups, according to security analysts and law enforcement officials.

Since its founding, the N.C.A.A. has operated with a business model that defined the college athlete as an amateur. But the N.C.A.A.’s $2.8 billion settlement on Thursday night in a class-action antitrust lawsuit represents the heaviest blow — and perhaps a decisive one — to that system. If approved by a U.S. district judge in California, the settlement would allow for the creation of the first revenue-sharing plan for college athletics, a landmark shift in which schools would directly pay their athletes for playing. This sea change, though, also carries its own questions, according to critics.

Industry analysts think the AI revolution is still in its early stages, and longtime fund manager Chris Retzler agrees. But the market veteran believes small, under-the-radar growth stocks—not the well-known companies that have already surged — are the best way to play the AI boom. AdvertisementHow to invest in small caps — and where to find themSince 2008, Retzler has single-handedly managed the Needham Small Cap Growth Fund (NESGX). Plus, investors are overlooking small-cap stocks' exposure to key growth opportunities like AI, data center buildouts, military modernization, and telecommunication improvements, in Retzler's view. "Money doesn't go immediately to small caps — it goes to the next market cap, generally," Retzler said.

(Photo by William WEST / AFP) (Photo by WILLIAM WEST/AFP via Getty Images)LONDON — Anglo American rejected a third takeover proposal from rival BHP Group on Wednesday, as the companies agreed to extend talks deadline by one week. The British miner confirmed the third proposal from BHP offered about £29.34 per Anglo American share, based on undisturbed share prices as of market close on April 23. Shares of Anglo American were up 0.35% shortly after the announcement, while BHP shares fell over 3.4%. The combined companies would form a behemoth in copper mining and the world's largest player in the space, supplying 10% of global output, according to a Reuters analysis. Anglo rejected both previous offers, however, saying that they "significantly undervalue the company and its future prospects."

The stock market's current bull rally could last for another 5 years, according to tech analyst Gene Munster. Munster said a new crop of AI companies will go public and drive a boom in the stock market. But Munster expects the stock market rally to morph into a bubble that eventually bursts. Instead, much of the upside that Gene sees inflating the stock market bubble will come from smaller AI-focused companies. AdvertisementAnd while Munster sees the stock market rally morphing into a bubble that comes to a painful end towards the end of the decade, that doesn't mean investors should avoid owning stocks.

Taylor Swift performs onstage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at SoFi Stadium on August 09, 2023 in Inglewood, California. At the core of the increasingly common accusation of price gouging is the sense that the consumer is being exploited. Price gouging is in the eye of the bidderGavin Roberts, chair of Weber State University’s economics department and who studies the effect of anti-price gouging laws, said the laws themselves often don’t define what price gouging is. Corporations charging as much as they can, as painful as it may be for consumers, doesn’t mean they’re necessarily price gouging, said Roberts. Steven Suranovic, an economics professor at George Washington University who has also published research on price gouging, sees it differently.
