The body found Wednesday near the Kentucky highway where a gunman opened fire Sept. 7 has been identified as the suspected shooter, Joseph A. Couch, officials said on Friday. Personal effects and a weapon were found with the body, officials said. Authorities have been searching for Couch, 32, since the shooting spree next to Interstate 75 in Kentucky that left five people seriously injured. The Laurel County Sheriff's Office said 12 vehicles were hit and an estimated 20 to 30 rounds were fired. The woman called dispatchers in Laurel County to report the messages.

Victims' families and a survivor of a Maryland bridge collapse that killed six people filed claims Friday for wrongful death and punitive damages against the owner and the operator of the massive cargo ship that crashed into the bridge earlier this year. The 100,000-plus-ton ship Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of March 26 as a work crew was fixing potholes. Six construction workers died when the bridge went crumbling down into the Patapsco River. The nearly two dozen crew members on the ship survived, along with two pilots who were helping the vessel navigate the harbor. Days after the bridge collapse, the ship’s Singapore-based owner and manager petitioned a Maryland court to limit their monetary liability to $43.67 million, the value of the ship and its cargo, based on a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law.

Laws in three states have enacted tougher restrictions for people who help voters with disabilities, language or other issues cast their ballots. Latino groups who have sued Texas, Arkansas and Missouri over these laws are warning that those who need help to vote in November’s elections may not get the assistance they need. “Many Latino voters have disabilities or English is not their first language. “We have to remember that the number of Latino voters who participated in 2020 was higher than the number needed to tip the presidential election results. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday rejected Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein’s last-ditch request to be included on the ballot in Nevada, a key swing state. The court in a brief unsigned order left in place a decision by the Nevada Supreme Court that blocked Stein from appearing on the ballot over a dispute concerning whether the Green Party had submitted the correct paperwork. Jay Sekulow, an ally of former President Donald Trump, represented the Green Party. In Nevada, which is expected to be closely contested, the Democrats sued to ensure Stein was not on the ballot. The case arose from correspondence between the Nevada Green Party and state officials this year over language to include on its petition seeking signatures to appear on the ballot.
