So she and Maggie had focused their hopes on getting a private scholarship. She considered paying $700 for an online class, heavily promoted on Facebook, that promised to show parents how to find college scholarships. Every year, hundreds of thousands of students like Maggie devote countless hours to the hunt for private scholarships to pay for college. AdvertisementWith the combination of institutional aid and private scholarship she received, Maggie managed to cut her original college bill from $15,000 to $8,000. The illness is treatable, but it's likely to cost the family $5,000 out of pocket — effectively wiping out the financial value of the private scholarship Maggie received.

Europe could be drifting in to a downturn as its biggest economies, Germany and France, fight political and economic woes at home. In Germany, composite purchasing manager's index (PMI data) measuring business activity in both sectors, came in at XXXX, down from XXX in August. In France, meanwhile, the composite PMI fell in September to an eight-month low of 47.4 from 53.1 in August. In the euro zone as a whole, the PMI data showed a decline from XXX last month to XXX, in September. Once Europe's poster-child for growth, Germany is now likened to the "sick man" of Europe by economists.

Yet Johnson, and any other Republican who votes for this bill, will be quietly defying Trump's wishes just weeks before the 2024 election. In essence, Trump asked Republicans to threaten a government shutdown over the provision. Yet when the continuing resolution with the SAVE Act came up for a vote last week, it failed, with 14 Republicans voting against it. Many Republicans simply don't want to have this fight right nowDespite Trump's push, Republicans on Capitol Hill understand that actually following his lead would be reckless. It's certainly possible that most Republicans will vote against Johnson's new government funding bill.

“The (US intelligence community) considers AI a malign influence accelerant, not yet a revolutionary influence tool,” an ODNI official told reporters. Iran, for example, has used AI to generate content in Spanish about immigration, which Tehran perceives as a divisive US political issue, the ODNI official said. Russia has generated the most AI content related to the US election of any foreign power, according to the ODNI official. Foreign operatives have also embraced plenty of old-school influence techniques this election cycle, such as staging videos rather than generating them with AI. This isn’t the first general US election where foreign powers have considered deploying AI capabilities.

Newly released federal data shows the US tech workforce is younger than the workforce at large and getting younger still. Tech workers under 25 are becoming more common, while the proportion of workers older than 40 shrinks. There's an age-old perception that tech workers should be young so they can move fast and break things. One of the top qualifications to land a tech job, it seems, is to possess a birth certificate dated after 1990. Women make up just 22% of tech workers — the same proportion of jobs they held in 2005.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. Recycling has not kept pace with plastic production, which has doubled over the past 20 years.

Investors have turned bearish on oil amid fears of an OPEC+ price war and weak China oil demand. But if world GDP grows 3.3% next year, energy demand will likely surge, Bank of America says. That's because if GDP grows according to estimates, energy demand growth will likely follow. Those factors, along with the chance for a global economic slowdown, pose downside risks to the analysts' oil price target.

China's youth unemployment rate in August rose to the highest level since the new system of record-keeping began in December, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed, amid an economic slowdown. China's urban unemployment rate across all age categories rose 5.3% in August, compared to a 5.2% climb in July. China paused reporting the youth unemployment rate for much of the latter half of last year while it reassessed its calculation methods. China's youth unemployment has also been affected by restrictive hiring policies amid a struggling economy as companies are refusing to hire recent college graduates due to the difficulty and costs involved in firing workers in China. "That's why the [overall] unemployment rate isn't that bad but the unemployment rate for youths is so high," Rein added.

Read previewIf Qualcomm sees it through, its takeover bid of Intel would likely be the biggest in Silicon Valley history. The possibility of Intel handing its 56-year history over to a younger rival emerged last week after several reports said that California-based semiconductor firm Qualcomm had made a takeover approach. That said, not everyone is convinced that Qualcomm needs Intel — or that a buyout would be a good idea for either company. My industry survey also indicates that Qualcomm is currently in takeover talks with Intel. A Qualcomm bid for Intel could face similar regulatory obstacles to the takeover attempt Nvidia made for Arm in 2020 and later abandoned in 2022.

Tokyo, Japan (AP) — Japan said its warplanes used flares to warn a Russian reconnaissance aircraft to leave northern Japanese airspace on Monday. It came a day after a joint fleet of Chinese and Russian warships sailed around Japanese northern coasts. Earlier in September, Russian military aircraft flew around southern Japanese airspace. The Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, accompanied by two destroyers, sailed between Japan’s westernmost island of Yonaguni and nearby Iriomote, entering close to Japan’s waters. According to Japan’s military, it scrambled jets nearly 669 times between April 2023 and March 2024, about 70% of the time against Chinese military aircraft, though that did not include airspace violations.

Investors are still expressing signs of concern despite the stock market hitting all-time highs, according to Deutsche Bank. The S & P and the Dow weren't alone in their milestones. Gold prices also notched a new all-time high following the supersized Fed cut, crossing the $2,600 per ounce level on Friday. Allen also highlighted that traditional valuation metrics are "elevated" considering the "relentless" nature of the market in 2024. Year to date, the S & P has gained nearly 20%, and has risen in 24 of this year's 38 weeks, according to FactSet.

Instead, I lied, which any boss would be able to see through, and that created distrust in those last four weeks. I didn't burn any bridges, but there was a sour taste left in both our mouths.

The CBOE Volatility Index , or VIX, fell below 16 on Monday and is now flirting with its lowest level since the July doldrums. "Our historical study of volatility shows that the VIX averaged 22 points in October, 4 points above the current VIX level. We believe the low implied volatility, upcoming October earnings season and elections provide an attractive opportunity for investors to hedge a potential rise in volatility," the note said. The options would have a strike price of 18 and expire in November, serving as a bet that expectations of volatility will rise as the election nears. There are no additional losses on the trade if the VIX actually declines instead.
