Will Ramsay, founder and CEO of the Affordable Art Fair, which puts on exhibits worldwide, said collecting art is easier than people might think. However, contemporary art is likely to increase in value over the long term, Diament said. There's also a satisfaction in buying something from a living artist, Diament said. "Some people like color, other people like to focus on drawings without color … you have people who collect just one artist," Taylor said. Provenance — which refers to the history and ownership of a piece — is often an important consideration when buying art.

The brand referred to them as “fluid interruptions,” a concept that was echoed in the collection’s flowing organza dresses and fringed skirts. Above all, though, it evoked the secretions of a snail, an animal that has recently been crawling into the realms of design and fashion. In an accelerated age, it makes sense that we’d revere a creature that moves through the world slowly and deliberately. In 2019, he released a wearable snail-shaped art piece made from recycled plastic bottles and bags. At least 1,100 species of land snails are known to be endangered, so it’s only natural that the fashion companies celebrating snails in their designs are usually those that limit waste or rely upon recycled materials: The British label Story Mfg.

How the Humble Sheet Cake Became Top Tier

The Los Angeles-based baker Michelle Boulos can still picture the sheet cakes she ate as a child: slathered with bright white frosting, decorated with tiny plastic balloons. But the confections she makes and sells via her Instagram account No Good Cakes are something else entirely. On one recent creation, frills of buttercream surrounded an acid green ombré surface inspired by a chemical spill. Boulos, 34, started baking the fantastical cakes out of her home in 2022 after making one for a wedding. “I got bitten by the sheet cake bug,” she says.

Warren Buffett and his longtime business partner Charlie Munger almost never butt heads, but there has been one rare area of disagreement between the two investment legends. Costco has grown from less than $5 a share in the early 1980s to more than $560 a share today. 'Shoot me first' As Munger's obsession over Costco grew stronger over the years, Buffett learned to make lighthearted jokes about it. "Charlie said, 'I would like to give, once more, my speech on the virtues of Costco — with illustrations.' I kind of used them up between Costco and Apple," Buffett once said.

As part of the preparations for her first solo exhibition, held this past summer at the NOW Gallery in South London, Simone Brewster designed “Crown,” a set of wooden combs inspired by traditional African hairstyles. Six weeks later, unable to find anyone who could execute the small but complex designs, Ms. Brewster was about to give up. Then Max Lamb, a friend and fellow designer, offered his workshop, which had the band saw, pillar drills and sanding machines she needed to make them herself. “It went from being this really stressful thing, because no one would make them for me, to something really fun,” said the designer, 40, who has picked up a variety of craft skills since she studied woodworking at school. “Once I know I’m going to make something, it’s not stressful for me because I know I can do it.”

You may think the term "net worth" only applies to celebrities and CEOs, but it's something we all have — and we all should know it. Here's a breakdown of both median and average American net worth by age, according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances published in October 2023. Knowing your net worth can help you assess whether your next financial move is a good one. Empower (formerly Personal Capital) and Mint are two platforms that make tracking your net worth easy. Empower has its own net worth calculator and Mint has a net worth-specific dashboard that calls out your progress each month.

The current exemption limit is $12.92 million for estates of individuals and $25.84 million for the combined estates of married couples. About 0.1 to 0.2% of estates of people who died in recent years have been subject to federal tax. A common strategy is to trim your estate's value before Dec. 31, 2025, and then keep it below the exemption limit, if feasible, or as low as possible to minimize tax exposure. This would assure substantial resources for their grandkids' educations while reducing the couple's combined estate by $1.7 million. While getting organized to reduce your estate's value by making gifts, it's a good idea to get updated real estate appraisals.

Federal prosecutors have accused 10 people of orchestrating a $20 million scheme to “get rich” by buying and selling black-market H.I.V. medications that in some cases had been purchased from low-income patients who risked their lives by selling it. Some of those accused in the case then used the proceeds to buy luxury cars, waterfront real estate in New York City, designer clothes, jewelry and gold, according to a statement released Friday by Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. According to a 24-page indictment filed in Federal District Court in Manhattan, the scheme also involved bribing patients to use specific local pharmacies that were involved in the plot and defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies of millions of dollars since 2017. Mr. Williams said those accused in the case had been “preying on vulnerable members of society.” Several of the defendants are facing decades in prison on various charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and health care fraud and money laundering.
